Escalante Canyon Road Dispersed (650 Rd)

Accessible via a smooth gravel road approximately 12 miles from Highway 50, this free BLM dispersed camping area stretches along 650 Road through Escalante Canyon. The drive takes about 30 minutes from the highway, passing through private farmland before reaching numerous pull-off sites scattered along the canyon floor. Wild Berries B. notes to "continue further" past the first campsites, as "there are plenty more to go, some with access to the water."

Sites range from roadside spots where highway noise carries to more secluded areas deeper into the canyon where traffic sounds fade. Many established sites feature fire rings and level parking suitable for large RVs. Piñon trees provide scattered shade, though several reviewers mention evidence of tree cutting for firewood. The desert landscape heats up quickly in summer mornings, but nights remain comfortable without air conditioning.

Escalante Creek runs through the canyon, offering hiking access to red cliff bases and potential swimming spots, though water quality concerns from upstream agricultural runoff make swimming questionable. The creek can be too deep to cross during higher water periods, limiting access to canyon trails on the opposite side. Cell service varies by location, with Verizon coverage reported as excellent in some areas.

Strong canyon winds frequently affect the area, particularly in late spring and early summer. Road conditions remain good for all vehicle types, though the narrow shelf road sections require careful passing. Some sites show broken glass and trash, but most areas stay relatively clean. For those seeking additional camping options in the region, campgrounds around Delta provide alternatives with more amenities.

The area works well for campers comfortable with no facilities who want free camping with creek access and decent cell coverage for remote work.

Overall great

Tons of spots; a handful closer to the parking lot where you can still get cell service, I traded service for more privacy

Nice and open with pretty views

High desert canyon setting. There are a good # of sites from right off the highway to down into the canyon. Pretty busy for a week day in May.

Very peaceful and easy access

We enjoyed our stay here. We went further down the road and had the place to ourselves. Beautiful views, excellent Verizon service, and overall would definitely visit again.

There did appear to be some long term campers in the area but everyone kept to themselves.

Great one night pull off

Location was right off the road but once you drive about 5 minutes down the road you cannot hear any traffic. No other campers. Road was packed gravel almost like highway. We have camper van and our site and most of them were flat and had established fire rings. Dry and dessert landscapes.

Great spot!

So many spots along this road! Beautiful views. A little hot because it’s not shaded

Haven of peace and beauty

We pulled over before the BLM sites with fire rings. Fun hikes up the base of the red cliffs and down to the creek. It looks like there is a swimmable spot but the water looked too compromised by farm run-offs to risk it. Also it’s a substantial drive up the gravel road past farmed fields.

Cab be windy in the canyon

Made camp here for 1 night traveling west. Many sites available both by the highway and down in the canyon. Canyon road was in good shape and even the largest RV could go down it. Sites were pretty level. No toilets, etc.

Quiet, reasonably convenient

I was going to head 11 miles down the road but decided I’d rather have WiFi. It was a good call. Just past Labor Day, there were three of us last night about 1/2 mile off the main drag. Enough places to pull off though you can still hear some main road traffic.

The area was clean except one site with broken glass. Clear skies with great stargazing.

No amenities here whatsoever but that’s just fine. Comes with the free price.

Private, scenic dispersed camping

This place is easily accessible off 650 Road. Has a smooth dirt road and a short scenic drive along a shelf road. Highly recommend for a night or two of camping. When we were here for one night in late June, winds were strong.

Awesome night sky, hidden cacti

We stopped in late, the roads are smooth and there is a lot of places to pull off and have privacy. If road noise bothers you, just venture further along the road. Downside: there was a lot of small hidden vicious cacti, we were afraid of letting the dogs out. We went mid June, it got hot fast in the morning, but was pleasant enough in the night to not need a/c. Sunrise was pretty also.

Perfect remote place for Memorial weekend

Not sure what to expect we gave this place a chance. Plus we wanted to have few days for ourselves during the memorial weekend. We got all of it, except with occasional ATVs passing by. The road to the camp site from the I-50 road is rather long (12 miles, cca 30 min), but very easy and quite picturesque. However I’d avoid it during the night as it gets narrow on parts and vehicle need to wait at the wider sides to pass each other. Once you pass the private land and get to the first campsites continue further. There are plenty more to go, some with access to the water. Surrounded by many piñon trees, that some are unfortunately cut with a chain saw and probably used for the firewood, they still give enough shade and beautiful views of the canyon and Escalante Creek. One day we biked on the road to reach the Escalante Canyon but we couldn’t pass the wide and fairly deep stream of the creek. We also failed to attempt to cross the creek to go for a hike on the other side of the canyon. Perhaps in drier days can easily be done. We enjoyed the stay a lot. Be also prepared for strong winds coming though the canyon in May time.
