What to do
Hiking with dogs: At Cherry Creek State Park, well-maintained trails accommodate both hikers and their furry companions. "Cherry Creek is such a great park; I've spent so much time biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, spending time with family... The dog park is by far the best. Off leash—so much room; well taken care of and big lake for the dogs to swim," notes Jenny P.
Horseback riding: Horse enthusiasts can explore Indian Creek for dedicated equestrian trails. "Love this area! Lots of beautiful trails, close to Denver and very peaceful. Bring your ponies, it's an equestrian campground!" shares Mikaela R. The Colorado Trail also intersects with the area, providing extended riding options.
Mountain biking: Golden Gate Canyon State Park offers extensive multi-use trails for cycling enthusiasts. "The options for trails are endless. Great for mountain biking or hiking enthusiasts. The park feels like it's far from the city, but the drive is easy for a weekend camping trip!" explains Steph A. Trails vary from beginner-friendly loops to more challenging technical routes.
What campers like
Natural surroundings: Campers at Bear Creek Lake Park appreciate the balance of wilderness and accessibility. "While this campground is minutes from the city and seconds from a highway, at night you feel like you are in a quiet, mountain campsite with stars to gaze for days," reports Kandisa S. The park's position in the foothills creates a transitional ecosystem between plains and mountains.
Camp amenities: Reverend's Ridge Campground receives praise for its facilities. "Campground is very clean. Loop E (electric hookups) is very spacious and well laid out. Every campsite is a pull thru allowing you situate anywhere along the paved area to best suit your needs. Mostly level, fire rings, and very large metal picnic tables," notes Dennis G.
Wildlife viewing: The area's diverse animal populations enhance camping experiences. "Indian Creek is lush and wooded, while still being close to Denver. The drive in is easy, following a paved road most of the way," says Steph A. about Indian Creek Equestrian Campground. Wildlife includes deer, elk, and occasionally moose or black bears in more remote areas.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds near Littleton fill quickly during summer months. For Staunton State Park, "Sites are stretched out along two short trails. Most far enough that it makes sense to treat it a bit like backpacking so you have fewer trips to make," explains Laura S.
Weather considerations: Mountain conditions can change rapidly. Pack for temperature swings of 30-40 degrees between day and night, especially at higher elevations. "We went in June and July. Check the weather. We had very cold weather in both June and July, weather hit the low 30's," warns K.R. about Staunton State Park.
Fire restrictions: During dry periods, fire bans are common. "No campfires allowed ever. I brought stoves no bigger than a jetboil/MSR dragonfly," notes K.R. about Staunton State Park Campground. Always check current fire restrictions before your trip.
Tips for camping with families
Beginner-friendly options: Chatfield State Park Campground offers amenities that make family camping more comfortable. "Great views of mountains. Just minutes south of Denver. With decent facilities and a playground for kiddos," reports Jessica V. The park also features a swim beach popular with families during summer months.
Space considerations: When camping with children, select sites that provide adequate room. "In each loop there is a few bathroom options but our closest one was closed until Memorial Day. Thankfully, the large bathroom and shower house was close to our site. The bathrooms were in excellent condition," shares Hayley K. about Chatfield State Park.
Activity planning: Schedule morning activities during summer when temperatures are moderate. "Campground is in a beautiful area near Golden. There are plenty of hiking trails in the park some easy some difficult. Make sure you leave out prepared," advises Rich M. regarding Reverend's Ridge Campground.
Tips from RVers
Hook-up availability: Several equestrian campgrounds near Littleton, Colorado provide options for RVs with horses. "The campsites are well maintained with dedicated areas for horses and their owners to set up camp comfortably," notes a camper about Indian Creek Equestrian Campground.
Level sites: Finding level parking is important for RVs. "The sites are not very level so be prepared to use your blocks," warns Rich M. about Reverend's Ridge Campground in Golden Gate Canyon State Park. Bring leveling blocks, especially for larger rigs.
Dump station access: Plan your water usage based on facility availability. "Clean level spots. Very friendly attendant. Level primitive spots. $26 for primitive," notes Christa C. about Chatfield State Park, which offers a sanitary dump station for departing campers.
