Best Dog-Friendly Camping near San Miguel, CA

Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort and Vines RV Resort both offer designated pet areas for dogs to exercise. Full hookup RV sites, cabins, and tent camping accommodations accept pets with specific guidelines at each location. The dog parks provide space for pets to run off-leash while other campground areas require leashes. Bathrooms remain consistently clean at both resorts, with shower facilities available for campers. Many visitors note the campgrounds are exceptionally well-maintained with regular cleaning of facilities.

Williams Hill Recreation Area provides dispersed camping options for pet owners seeking a more primitive experience with their dogs. Pets must remain leashed in public areas to prevent wildlife encounters and protect other campers. Lake Nacimiento Resort allows pets at their tent sites, RV spaces, cabins, yurts, and glamping accommodations. Campgrounds in the Paso Robles area generally enforce quiet hours to minimize barking disturbances, though some reviews mention occasional noise issues from neighboring sites. Several RV resorts feature fenced dog areas with waste stations, making longer stays more comfortable for pet owners. Local veterinary services can be found within a 15-minute drive from most campgrounds, and pet supply stores are available in Paso Robles for emergency needs.

    Avila-Pismo Beach KOA

    Good base camp

We stopped here for a few nights so we could hook up to shore power for a bit, do laundry, dump etc. The campground itself is small and old so the sites can be a little small for the larger rigs. Bathrooms and showers were clean. People who run it were extremely accommodating - it was difficult for us to access the dump hookup in our first assigned site (we have a macerater with a very short hose) so they moved us to a better site. Easy walking/biking access to Avila beach (4.8miles round trip), and quick drive from Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo. They allow leashes pets and have a small dog park and pet “walk,” and while these are great, I also like to walk my dog around the whole campground when we can’t take her walks elsewhere, and this campground is very limiting. They have several signs up where dogs aren’t allowed.

Overall, this is a great location if you want access to the beach and nearby towns with nice basic amenities.

Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort

Very clean and lots of amenities!

We camped at Cava Robles about 6 months after it opened.  We saw the two pools which were very nice.  Didn't use them because it was too cold (we were there in February).  They also have at least two dog parks and took our high energy dog there to run.  They also have a great playground for the kids.  There is also a little hiking/walking trail around the campground.

    El Chorro Regional Park

Beautiful camping area with tons of amenities

Amazing park, the staff were extremely friendly and the grounds were very clean. Bathrooms were very clean snd always stocked. Showers are a dollar, but you get a lot longer than you would expect.

They do charge extra for dogs, $3.50/day/dog, but was well worth it as they have beautiful large dog parks a mile behind the campsite.

There is also a large children's park, sports fields, and a botanical garden (which does cost extra).

Morrow bay beaches are 10-15 minutes away. Sylvester's burgers is also only 15 minutes away, which is well worth the drive.

18 Primitive that can easily fit trailers/RVs and they have full hookup sites as well.

Only downside is you are right next to highway 1, so it's a little noisy, but not horrible.

    Doordash will also deliver here!

    Almond Tree Oasis RV Park

    It was ok!

Passing through for a night with discount was $32. Pull through full hookup gravel sites that are very tight and couldn’t put slide out as there was car parked in way. Dog park isn’t fenced off and running out of bags. Not many trees for shade and very close to noisy truck stop. Pool closed also. It was okay but nothing special.

    El Chorro Regional Park

    Nice two night stay

I’m a newbie camper but really enjoyed this campground. Stayed in Chumash. Sites were big enough and private enough. Nice dog park. Nice couple of hikes in the park. Very quiet. Would definitely stay again.

    El Chorro Regional Park

    Nice no-frills, out-in-nature camping

If anyone needs a good place to stay near Morro Bay (Central CA coast), El Chorro Regional Park has 43 reasonably priced FHU back-in sites. Nothing fancy - out in nature, the way we like it, plus $1 showers, attentive rangers, and on-site camp hosts. Extremely convenient to both Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. Botanical Garden, dog park, shooting range and golf course all at/near the park.

    Almond Tree Oasis RV Park

    Ok for a quick stop

We stopped here for one night. Cute place, clean and well maintained but very tight spots. We got a large pull through and barely fit in with our 37’ class A. Only about 6ft to the next “yard”.

Only 1 working shower and toilet.

Dog park was basically a mud run… definitely not what I would call a dog run.

Not far off the hwy and quiet. Gas station/convenience store beside it.

Guide to San Miguel

Camping options near San Miguel include both developed RV resorts and primitive sites for those traveling with pets. The area sits at approximately 600 feet elevation in California's Central Coast region with mild temperatures averaging 61-77°F in summer and 44-66°F in winter. Winter camping can bring occasional rain, while summer months remain consistently dry.

What to do

Wine tasting shuttles: Several campgrounds offer convenient access to nearby wineries. At Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country, campers appreciate the proximity to vineyards. As one visitor noted, "The small vineyard next door is a must stop, especially since it's literally right next to the campground. It's also a short drive to downtown Paso and other nearby wineries."

Hot springs relaxation: For a unique experience, visit Franklin Hot Springs where you can soak in natural mineral waters. A camper shared, "Lovely people, hot springs are clean and large, swimming at night here is magical." Another mentioned, "Their springs are super clean. Fresh water flows through them all day long."

Beach exploration: Drive approximately 45 minutes west to reach coastal camping at Morro Strand State Beach Campground. Though basic in amenities, its location provides excellent beach access. One camper reported, "You can't get any closer to the ocean, and if you are lucky enough to camp in one of the sites on the west side, you have an unobstructed view of the waves."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many dog friendly campgrounds near San Miguel maintain high cleanliness standards. At San Simeon Creek Campground, campers appreciate the well-maintained sites. One visitor mentioned, "This was a beautiful campground with level, paved sites, lots of trees, great showers, and access to the beach within walking distance."

Dog-specific amenities: Beyond just allowing pets, some campgrounds provide dedicated pet areas. A visitor to Wine Country RV Resort noted, "Nice dog park for your dog," which makes longer stays more comfortable for those traveling with pets.

Pool access: During hot summer months, access to swimming facilities stands out as a valued amenity. At Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort, one camper shared, "We used both pools and spas daily even in December. Sites are gravel with concrete pads. All have fireplaces and seemed appropriately level."

What you should know

Road conditions: Some dispersed camping areas require driving on unpaved roads. At Williams Hill Recreation Area, a visitor advised, "Dirt road to get there but safe, clean place. Stunning view." Another noted, "Our transmission did start heating up as the road was filled with washboard and it was steep and we had to go pretty slow."

Site spacing varies: Proximity to neighbors differs significantly between campgrounds. At Morro Strand, one camper observed, "The sites are so close together that I felt like I was camping with strangers. My fire ring was about ten feet from my neighbor's fire ring."

Weather variations: The region experiences significant temperature changes between coastal and inland areas. At San Simeon, campers often mention, "Because you are right by the ocean, it can get pretty cold at night," while inland campgrounds may reach high temperatures in summer.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Multiple recreational options keep children entertained. At Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort, a visitor mentioned, "Dog parks, kid parks, a pool etc! The only thing was the Bistro was closed (because of covid) otherwise we can't wait to go back and bring our friends!!"

Beach accessibility: Coastal campgrounds offer easy beach access for family activities. At Morro Strand State Beach, "Surfers, kids playing in sand, kiting and other beach activities popular. Not my favorite beach campground, but it is a very popular spot for those avoiding the high heat of California deserts."

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds have a more party-oriented atmosphere. At Lake Nacimiento Resort, one camper warned, "This camp ground is definitely a party site and camp sites are on top of each other thankfully we had very nice neighbors that actually gave us tips and tricks to all things lake camping."

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: RV camping near San Miguel requires careful site selection. A visitor to Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country advised, "We were glad we upgraded to a concrete pad, rather than the spaces with DG [decomposed granite]." Another mentioned, "The sites are very close to each other unless you upgrade."

Hookup details: Most RV resorts offer full hookups with varying amperage options. At Paso Robles RV Ranch, campers noted, "Full hookups, flat paved or unpaved sites depending on what you select. We chose the cheapest during mid January so it was about $64."

Laundry facilities: When planning extended stays, note available laundry options. One RVer mentioned, "Super clean CC operated Laundry, no more searching for quarters! Sites are immaculate. It's a quiet stop, not a party place."
