Yanks RV Resort's two dedicated dog parks provide ample space for pets to exercise while camping near San Lucas. Most campgrounds in the area enforce leash requirements outside designated off-leash areas, with Pinnacles Campground and Kirk Creek Campground both welcoming pets at their sites. San Lorenzo Park offers full hookups for RV campers with dogs, featuring level pull-through sites and clean facilities. The dog parks at Yanks are particularly well-maintained, with one reviewer noting they provide plenty of room for dogs to run and play after long travel days. Williams Hill Recreation Area permits pets at its dispersed camping sites, offering a more primitive option for those seeking a natural experience with their animals. Most campgrounds limit pets to two per site, though specific policies vary by location.

Hiking trails throughout the region accommodate leashed dogs, though Pinnacles National Park restricts pets from all trails within the park boundaries. Campers report the Upper Sweetwater Laguna Mountain Campground provides excellent opportunities for dog walking with picnic tables and toilet facilities in a natural setting. Summer temperatures in the area can reach extreme highs, requiring extra water and shade considerations for pets. The fenced dog areas at Yanks RV Resort include a dog washing station, particularly valuable after outdoor adventures. Wildlife encounters are possible in more remote camping areas like Williams Hill, so keeping pets secured is essential for their safety and local wildlife protection. Campgrounds with hookups allow for climate control in RVs during hot weather, making them preferable for pet comfort during summer months.

      Yanks RV Resort

An Oasis in the Middle of Nowhere

After being on the road for 2 1/2 months this place was just what we needed for a stop over on our way NORTH on 101. Clean everything, perfect level cement pad, large very nice dog park with room for the pups to run and play and a friendly helpful staff. This would be a perfect place to explore Pinnacle National or Hearst Castle. There is nothing near buy, except a Shell station with the lowest diesel prices I’ve seen in California. We ordered dinner from Luigi’s (located in Gonzales) they delivered for free and the food was fantastic. We will definitely stay here again.

Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort

Very clean and lots of amenities!

We camped at Cava Robles about 6 months after it opened.  We saw the two pools which were very nice.  Didn't use them because it was too cold (we were there in February).  They also have at least two dog parks and took our high energy dog there to run.  They also have a great playground for the kids.  There is also a little hiking/walking trail around the campground.

      Almond Tree Oasis RV Park

      It was ok!

Passing through for a night with discount was $32. Pull through full hookup gravel sites that are very tight and couldn’t put slide out as there was car parked in way. Dog park isn’t fenced off and running out of bags. Not many trees for shade and very close to noisy truck stop. Pool closed also. It was okay but nothing special.

      Yanks RV Resort

      Beautiful new park

Not sure how new this park is but the facilities look very new. Beautiful pads, amenities, and landscaping. Small but clean dog park. Small but clean play area for kids. Pool was up and running in November! Cute sitting area with fireplace. Great stop in the middle of agriculture fields.

      Almond Tree Oasis RV Park

      Ok for a quick stop

We stopped here for one night. Cute place, clean and well maintained but very tight spots. We got a large pull through and barely fit in with our 37’ class A. Only about 6ft to the next “yard”.

Only 1 working shower and toilet.

Dog park was basically a mud run… definitely not what I would call a dog run.

Not far off the hwy and quiet. Gas station/convenience store beside it.

Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort

      Beautiful resort

A lot of RV parks use resort in their names but this one deserves it! Large, well spaced sites, beautiful pools, laundry ($2 wash and $2 dry), hot tubs, outdoor common areas, dog parks, clean restrooms with hot showers. We were delighted to stay hear after checking out another RV park just a bit north on 101. Quiet and peaceful. We will be back!

      Laguna Mountain Campground

Hard to Believe This Place is FREE!

This place is so great! It is difficult to find BLM camping in California and this is a gem!

The road is in prone to mudslides and looked like is was recently cleared of mud in multiple spots. Warning though this is the kind of mud that is like clay and has to be scraped off of wheel wells and undercarriage. We collected quite a bit and the underneath of our RV looks like hundreds of stalactites grew and THAT was on the recently cleared spots! The road itself is paved but very potholed, patched and narrow. Be aware of blind corners on weekends when the traffic increases and people fly up the narrow road!

The campground has big flat parking areas for RVs, vans or tents. The individual spots are spaced out nicely and all seemed to have some shade. Also there are covered picnic tables, fire pits and a bathroom which consists of a clean pit toilet. There is NO water, hook ups, or garbage available so don't forget to bring extra water to extinguish your fire as this is a high risk fire zone. Pack in and pack out!

The days and nights are quiet and very relaxing! Bird and wildlife viewing abundant and hiking trails nearby.

There is absolutely NO cell reception at the campground or the road in, NO AT&T, NO Verizon, and NO T-Mobile!

      Will definitely come here again!

    Guide to San Lucas

Williams Hill Recreation Area offers dispersed camping opportunities 7 miles up a dirt road from San Lucas. The BLM site features 7 formal camping spots with concrete pads, covered picnic tables, and fire rings at 1,500 feet elevation. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F while winter nights can drop below freezing, requiring appropriate seasonal preparations for campers and their pets.

    What to do

Waterfall hiking: Access the trail to Limekiln waterfall directly across from Kirk Creek Campground. One reviewer notes, "There's a great hike up to see the Limekilns with a beautiful waterfall," while another mentions it's "a short walk to get to a waterfall after passing through the limekilns."

Stargazing: Clear skies at Road's End provide exceptional night sky viewing with minimal light pollution. A camper reports, "The full moon was beautiful and the last night was fantastic for star gazing (tons of stars, milky way, etc.) before the moon came up."

Wildlife viewing: The trails around Williams Hill Recreation Area offer opportunities for bird watching and spotting local animals. A visitor observed "plenty of birds hanging out to watch while making our camp breakfast" with another mentioning that Upper Sweetwater has "lots of wildlife. Be careful while hiking we came across a rattle snake."

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Campers appreciate the spacing at Upper Sweetwater Laguna Mountain Campground where "sites are well spaced and dead quiet at night" and "clean, easy, spacious... pretty private." The layout allows for a quieter camping experience away from neighbors.

Clean facilities: Pinnacles Campground maintains its amenities well according to visitors: "Friendly staff. Wonderful showers. Campground was full the weekend we were there," and another added, "Clean bathrooms. Private sites. Very convenient location to trails."

Off-leash areas: Dog friendly campgrounds near San Lucas include designated spaces for pets to run freely. Reviewers at Yanks RV Resort particularly value that "This resort has two beautiful dog parks and a dog washing station!" with another noting it provides "large very nice dog park with room for the pups to run and play."

    What you should know

Road conditions: Access to some campgrounds requires driving on unpaved or challenging roads. The route to Williams Hill includes "a 7 mile dirt road at times a bit steep and rough" while another camper mentions it "was dusty and kinda long way up a hill."

Limited availability: Popular sites fill quickly, especially during peak seasons. At Limekiln State Park, "The park is small with 24 campsites and they are booked 6 months ahead so will have to plan in advance." Similarly, Kirk Creek "is always booked up on recreation.gov but I was able to snag a single night in the middle of the week due to a cancellation."

Wildlife encounters: Be prepared for interactions with local animals. At Pinnacles, campers warn about "raccoons….everywhere…. seriously leave your car locked, these little buggers were not afraid of humans." Upper Sweetwater visitors report seeing "deer, quails, turkeys, coyotes in one night."

    Tips for camping with families

Pool access: San Lorenzo Park provides relief during hot weather with its swimming facilities. A visitor commented the campground has "mostly level, mostly gravel and grass, mostly pull through sites. Water, and 30 amp and 12 V available... a nice walking path, circles the campground and is well used in the mornings and evenings by locals."

Educational opportunities: The agricultural museum at San Lorenzo Park offers learning experiences. One camper noted, "Real Interesting...They have an agricultural museum there. Which would have been cool to actually spend some time and check out but we just saw the 100+ tractors and agricultural equipment on the way in and out of there."

Pet-friendly trails: Multiple dog-friendly hiking paths accommodate family pets near San Lucas. At Upper Sweetwater Laguna Mountain Campground, a visitor remarked that "If you love hiking this place has awesome views and lots of wildlife" making it suitable for families with dogs seeking exercise options.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: For larger vehicles, choose campsites carefully as not all accommodate bigger rigs. At Williams Hill, one RVer advised, "I wouldn't advise big RVs coming up here. Most of the spots only accommodate like van size and down," while another mentioned they "towed our 30' travel trailer up to this dispersed campground" with some difficulty.

Hookup availability: San Lorenzo Park provides essential services for longer stays. A camper noted, "King City has grocery, gas, some restaurants and some shops just outside of the park" and the campground itself offers "full hook ups available" at reasonable rates.

Level sites: RVers should note pad conditions at different campgrounds. At Yanks RV Resort, campers appreciate the "perfect level cement pad" and report the facilities are "all paved and full hook up" with "large level spots FHU some shade."
