    Fiddlers Cove RV Park

Great RV Park - We love it!

Very clean and well maintained but rather small RV park collocated with a nice marina. This is a military installation so it’s not open to the public. This is our go to staycation place on San Diego bay. Close enough to Coronado but far enough to be secluded. 20/30/50 amp power, water, and cable TV connections on the pedestals. Most spaces are back-in, but some are pull-through. Pet friendly with disposal stations, and the park has a nice mini-mart.

    Mission Bay RV Resort

    Short and to the point

It’s a nice Rv resort. Big rig friendly pull through sites. Went Veterans Day weekend 2021 and the weather was perfect. Short walk to the water, De Anza Cove. The beach is a dog friendly after 4 p.m.

    Fiddlers Cove RV Park

    Military RV park

Water front back in sites, pull through sites, other back in sites not waterfront and two tent sites. Don’t book with the concierge service. Easier to call the campground itself. Cell service is great and they have WiFi. Clean restrooms with shower. Water, sewage and power hook ups (30&50 amp). Small store and a boat house you can rent stuff like kayaks and paddle boards from. Great hidden gem.

    Lake Jennings

    Hidden Gem

This place is truly a hidden gem. Just 30 minutes from San Diego, with friendly staff and partial or full hookups. We were in a preferred lake view site#96 which had water and electric hookups. There was a play area that had ladder golf, tetherball, and ping pong. Have extra guess? Have them reserve a Tipi that has a max of 6 people. We had thee bars on our Version service and the campground WIFI is one of the best I have seen camping. Lake Jennings has some supplies available as well such as ice, propane, firewood, etc. at reasonable prices. Bathrooms and showers are clean. There is a dump station in the campground, and I suggest checking out the best way to get into the dump station before taking your rig. there are several roads around the dump station but only one that takes you in straight without having to make a sharp turn and possibly having to back up. The lake is drinking water for the local town and therefore no swimming allowed but they do stock the lake with fish. Just a long walk or short drive to the other side of the Lake and you can go fishing or boating. I would not suggest checking in early. The road in is very narrow and if you arrive before the noon checkout time you may find yourself falling into the lake while trying to squeeze by another on coming RV or trailer.

Palm Canyon Hotel & RV Resort

Family Friendly Borrego Springs full with hookups

A nice little (120 spaces or so) full hookup (30 and 50 amp) campground.  We paid $289 for 5 nights. Clean, well maintained and full of families.  Very close to downtown and Anza-Borrego Visitor Center.  Spaces are good size, no problems fitting our 30' toy hauler towed by F250, and the park is well laid out and easy to drive. Checkin was fast and easy.  There are full time residents, but they are in a different section.  We used it as a base for hiking and off-roading at Octotillo Wells (both recommended, but bring as much water as you  can carry). The property has an old west theme, and there is also a hotel , laundromat and restaurant. If you have never visited this part of California, be advised that the wind here can be VERY intense, especially at night.  Also note that Borrego Springs is a dark sky community, so please be respectful and remember to look up and enjoy the stars.

    Thousand Trails Pio Pico

    Be Truthful

I’m new to RV’s, and the lifestyle. I’ve been planning on full time RV living for the last 10 months. Pio Pico is the 1st RV park I’ve stayed at. I was enjoying my quite solitude, when my closest neighbor told me, one of the workers has tested positive for Covid-19, so I hauled ass out of there. Luckily, I didn’t have any human contact whatsoever with anyone there during my stay. I have bronchial asthma, so I wasn’t taking any chances.
Too bad, because it felt remote, quiet, and was only a nice 7 mile drive from grocery stores, retail stores, food, gas, etc., if you needed anything. 30 amp, and water at site. Dumping area with two stations. Nice paths to hike, or walk your dog. Laundry was open, but only facility I used was the dump station. I didn’t get any TV reception, but others did. I didn’t have a powered antenna, but I do now. The internet was slow and iffy. They said they were working on it. I got to see a few shows on Netflix, Hulu, YouTube... No cell service at all, but I did get a little with my WeBoost. I wasn’t expecting much with mountains all around. I would have given another star, but keeping something like a worker testing positive for covid-19 from customers is not a good business idea. I’d probably give them another try though, since it had the seclusion I was looking for.

Tamarisk Grove Campground — Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

    Beautiful desert campground

Cool campground, quiet but busy with day use visitors and hikers, host available with lots of info at kiosk.

A bit pricey at $35/night. No hookups available, no dump station. RV max length is 21 ft. Hike/bike spots $5/per person, day use fee is $10.

No water here for drinking, but there are spigots throughout the campground. Showers available, pay via token.

Just about no cell service here. Very nice short loop trail just across the street, bursting with flowers in the spring.  Plenty of room to park your vehicle (even big rigs) outside the campground along the road.

    Leapin' Lizard RV Ranch

    Very clean and friendly

Staying here for the fall, winter, spring season. The facilities are very clean with a beautiful pool and spa. The rates are reasonable especially if staying long term. It’s mostly quiet although there are off road vehicles around they’re not too irritating. There are occasional fireworks. It feels very safe here. Lots of shade.

    William Heise County Park

Forest and Mountains just a couple hours from the city

Sweet campground with pines trees and a mountain feel. Table and fire pit at each site.

Hiking available walking distance from camp, trails leading out of camp. Family friendly environment. Can get busy in the summer, so be sure to leave it just as beautiful or better than before you arrived.

Guide to Mount Laguna

Mount Laguna sits at 6,000 feet elevation in eastern San Diego County, providing cooler temperatures than coastal areas even during summer months. Camping options range from primitive tent sites to full-service RV parks with amenities. Several campgrounds maintain seasonal operations with varying access depending on weather conditions, particularly during winter months when snow is possible.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The small catch-and-release pond at Ramona Oaks RV Resort offers a convenient fishing spot. "They do have a small lake that is catch and release only, don't know exactly what fish are in there but I did catch a few sun fish," notes one visitor.

Hiking access: From Stagecoach Trails Resort, campers can explore nearby Julian within a short drive. "Julian is about 20 minutes away, cute little mountain town with a brewery and some good food!" reports one camper who enjoyed the location's seclusion.

Swimming and relaxation: Many campgrounds maintain pool facilities during summer months. At Escondido RV Resort, "The grounds are layed out great. Its located close to alot of attractions," according to one visitor who appreciated the well-maintained facilities.

What campers like

Security features: Safety measures vary by location. "Has a coded security gate which changes monthly," mentions a camper about Ramona Oaks RV Resort, which also offers RV storage options.

Spacious layouts: Site configurations accommodate various camping setups. "Spaces are concrete, level and have privacy hedges," notes a visitor about Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay, where elite sites include additional amenities like gas fire BBQ grills.

Connectivity options: Internet access varies significantly by location. At Thousand Trails Oakzanita Springs, "the lodge is also warm and clean, worked out of there a couple of mornings, and the Wi-Fi was actually decent," reports a camper who needed to stay connected.

What you should know

Water considerations: Some locations have water quality concerns. "The only downside is the drinking water has issues," mentions one reviewer about Ramona Oaks RV Resort. Consider bringing drinking water if staying at affected campgrounds.

Road conditions: Access roads to mountain campgrounds can present challenges. "Limited 30/50 amp full-hookups. Large rigs, beware. access roads are narrow, hilly, AND curvy," warns a visitor to Thousand Trails Oakzanita Springs.

Updated information: Some campgrounds listed in directories may no longer operate. A recent visitor to Sunrise Highway RV Park reports, "drove there 7/9/2023 and the place no longer exists. It was sold years back and now is The Tiny House Block."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly facilities: Look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas. "They do have a nice playground for the kids," notes a visitor to Ramona Oaks RV Resort, which offers tent sites along with RV accommodations.

Pool access policies: Many resorts restrict pool hours or have seasonal operations. "Pool was nice and refreshing but had little shaded areas," mentions a summer visitor who suggests avoiding peak heat periods when using facilities.

Activity planning: Some resorts offer organized recreation. Oak Creek RV Resort provides access to a small lake that surprises even local visitors: "I had no idea there was a little like here, it's very pretty! We live close in the area."

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Location within RV parks affects experience quality. At Circle RV Resort, "Empty spaces, half in the space, half in the street, it was nuts. I guess there's a new manager who said she has her work cut out for her."

Dump station availability: Service options vary by location. At Thousand Trails Oakzanita Springs, "the honey wagon will come around and empty your tanks, plus they have a dump station, since it's just water and electric hookups," explains a visitor who paid for this convenience.

Propane services: Refill options exist at select locations. "Fill propane available on site," notes a camper about Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay, which offers extensive resort-style amenities for RV camping near Mount Laguna, California.
