What to do
Explore tide pools and caves: At Leo Carrillo State Park Campground, the beach offers excellent exploration opportunities about 10 minutes walking distance from most campsites. "The beach access is definitely the best part about this campground - it's about a 10-minute walk from most sites, and you can explore some amazing tide pools and caves once you get there. The kids loved searching for hermit crabs and sea anemones," shares Ryan W.
Biking along coastal paths: Extended bike routes run along several beaches, providing miles of paved paths. "The bike path near Dockweiler extends for miles in both directions, offering morning exercise opportunities," explains Ignasi M. Bringing a bike enhances transportation options between beaches and local attractions.
Enjoy wildlife viewing: Natural areas adjacent to campgrounds provide unexpected wildlife encounters. "Wildlife is abundant. There is plenty of birdwatching, and coyotes were wandering through the park and campground without fear. On a hike right out of the park a few hundred yards, I came across a pair of bobcats—mom and cub—making their way to a running creek," notes Ryan W. at Malibu Creek.
What campers like
Ocean proximity with full amenities: Waterfront RV Park provides quick beach access combined with campground facilities. "We really enjoyed this park... mainly due to the proximity to the beach areas. When we booked a trip to Huntington, our main priority was to get to the beach. Booking a site here at Waterfront, provided us an excellent homebase that was close to the water. In all, you are about a 2 minute walk to the sand, and 4 minutes to the oceanfront," shares Zach R.
Canyon shade in summer heat: Many campers appreciate the natural cooling shade at certain campgrounds. "The campground is tucked away in a beautiful canyon setting with lots of shade trees, which was really nice for keeping cool. Our site was spacious enough for our two tents and had a good fire pit and picnic table setup," explains Alfred about Leo Carrillo.
Clean facilities with security: Golden Shore RV Resort receives consistent praise for maintenance. "The grounds are kept in excellent condition - very clean and secure. The pool, showers, bathrooms are all spotless," notes Rachel P. The park also features "security is very good and felt very safe, especially considering the location."
What you should know
Nighttime noise factors: Various sound issues affect campgrounds differently. "You will hear each and every one of the planes taking off from LAX, but at one point you don't hear them anymore. It was not really annoying, but that flight at 5a was..." reports Ignasi M. At Huntington Beach locations, "do expect some road noise from the PCH. Friday/Saturday were the worst nights," adds Zach R.
Limited privacy between sites: Bonelli Bluffs and similar parks feature close spacing. "Good camp ground if you like being 6 ft away from your neighbors. More of a group or community campground. Shared fire pit and tables. Not the place to go if you are trying to get away from people," advises Michael S.
