Naval Air Station Point Mugu operates this beachfront military recreation facility, providing camping access exclusively to active duty, retired military personnel, and their sponsored guests. The campground sits directly on the Pacific coastline with Point Mugu rock visible to the south and a protected estuary extending northward.
Sites occupy open, paved terrain with most offering full hookups for RVs up to 45 feet. Janet R. notes the RV area is "heavily used but clean and nicely maintained, and in a beautiful location right on the beach." Tent sites cluster closer together in basic configurations. The facility includes multiple accommodation types, from standard campsites to yurts and cabins positioned in a more secluded eastern section.
Marine wildlife frequents the adjacent waters and estuary. Campers regularly spot seals, sea lions, and various bird species from their sites. The beach provides direct fishing access, and the base's Morale, Welfare and Recreation center loans equipment including surfboards, snorkeling gear, and bicycles. "Beach is great for the kids and fishing," reports Pete B.. The protected location means fewer crowds compared to nearby public beaches.
Wind conditions can be significant, particularly during certain seasons. Some infrastructure shows age, with reviews mentioning occasional equipment outages in laundry facilities and maintenance needs. The base includes a small Navy Exchange for basic supplies, though selection remains limited. Reservations require military credentials and advance booking through the MWR system.
The facility serves as a staging point for Channel Islands ferry trips from nearby Ventura and provides access to hiking in surrounding state parks and national forest areas. For military families seeking coastal camping with full amenities, this location combines beach access with the security and maintenance standards of base operations.
