Best RV Parks & Resorts near Fort Hunter Liggett, CA

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several RV parks provide accommodations near Fort Hunter Liggett. Yanks RV Resort in Greenfield offers 30/50-amp electric hookups with concrete pads suitable for large motorhomes. Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort contains 332 sites with full hookups, while Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country provides year-round RV spots with sewer connections and 30/50-amp service. Thousand Trails San Benito in Paicines features full-service RV sites that remain open throughout the year. Many parks include level parking areas specifically designed for big rigs. "Large level spots FHU some shade. Helpful staff clean and well kept," noted one visitor about Yanks RV Resort.

Between Highway 101 and the coast, RV travelers encounter varying amenities and terrain. Most established RV parks provide clean shower facilities, laundry services, and sanitary dump stations. Cell service can be unreliable in more remote locations, particularly in areas west of King City. Many parks welcome pets but enforce leash policies. During peak travel seasons, advance reservations become essential as available spaces fill quickly. While coastal RV parks offer scenic ocean proximity, they typically have fewer sites and limited big rig access compared to the larger resorts along Highway 101. A camper wrote, "The sites are pretty small, and most are on uneven ground which makes RV camping difficult," regarding coastal options.

    San Lorenzo Park

    Easy, Convenient & Pretty

What a find! Mostly level, mostly gravel and grass, mostly pull through sites. Water, and 30 amp and 12 V available. Not sure about 50 amp. Good cell service, bathrooms, showers and a dump station round out the on-site conveniences. Firings and picnic tables with a choice of well-shaded or solar-friendly sites. A nice walking path, circles the campground and is well used in the mornings and evenings by locals running or walking dogs and babies. The first half of the park has a rustic agriculture, museum, and lots of old farm equipment on display. There are also spaces to rent for parties and events with their own parking area separate from the campground. King City has grocery, gas, some restaurants and some shops just outside of the park.

Vines RV Resort, A Sun RV Resort

    Not Luxury

“Luxury RV Sites” not so much I’m not sure why they claim luxury.

It’s just cement pads on top of each other so no one has any privacy from their neighbors. Definitely not worth the$1600 a month to stay here. You would think for$1600 there would be more and better options offered.

It is a very clean campground, I will give them that. It says it includes a picnic table at the back in sites and we were there for 3 months and never saw 1 picnic table.

We are dog friendly people, we did not travel with our dogs, the campground is full of dogs which is great, our daughter loved it. Except there was constant barking from all over the campground. My neighbors dogs barked multiple times a day and multiple times at night, constantly waking us all up in the middle of the night and my daughter during her nap midday.

They do not enforce their own quiet hour rule. Like I said dogs were constantly barking, people playing loud music, loud diesel pickups and playing loud music driving throughout the campground.

They offer a great pool area, one bigger pool but it’s always in the shade because of the big solar panels they built. And one smaller pool in full sun which is nice. But it doesn’t matter because the water is so cold there’s no way we would ever try to take our toddlers swimming in those pools. There’s also a large jacuzzi in the shade.

It is a family friendly campground unless you have kids that nap during the day. It is very noisy. Not to mention it is located right along the freeway so you’re constantly hearing the roaring vehicle and truck sounds from that.

They had some tiny homes lining the outside of the campground that they were removing, I’m assuming to make more room for RVs. Which is great Monday-Friday. Then they were removing them Saturday and Sunday as well. Sunday is my husbands only day off and the only full day we get to spend together as a family. And we got to spend our beautiful Sunday sitting outside with our toddler playing and grilling, while listening to the banging and hammering and the loud trucks taking out the tiny homes on a SUNDAY.

They do have an awesome building by the pool that offers use of a play/game room, kitchen, grills, and dining room. Which is great but it’s constantly filled with people who are not staying in the campground on the weekends, so the people that are staying there and paying for the amenities can’t use it on the weekends.

Like I said, definitely not worth the$1600 monthly fees for long term living. If you’re here for just a night or two might not be that big of a deal. When we first got here we were told it would be$1400 monthly payments and not even a month in we get a call that they are raising the rates to$1600. Quite a joke of a“RV Resort”.

    Thousand Trails San Benito

    Very rough

Plenty of sites if you have 30 amp. Plenty of full hook up sites. The 50 amp sites were all in one section. If you don’t need to run your A/C you can get by with 30 amp hook up. We loved most of the sites were pull thru. Had good picnic tables. Restrooms and showers were great. Like others have said this place needs a lot of care. A lot of sites were out of order. Nice trails there. Gilmore was a distance for us to restock on supplies. Pool was open but not heated. Hot tub was closed for the winter season. You are out in the sticks so no cell phone service. You could purchase WiFi and patch your phone thru WiFi calling.

Pinnacles Campground — Pinnacles National Park

    Crowded But Not Awful

The park is amazing and there are so many great hikes, wildlife viewing and picturesque landscapes!

The campground loop we were in was full and the sites are fairly close to your neighbor but it wasn't bad. The main reason being absolutely NO generators allowed so it was peaceful. The sites were semi private as the brush and trees have grown around most sites offering a little privacy. Other campers were friendly and considerate. Note that the RV side with the hook up does not offer any privacy and is near the main road. RVs are not confined to that area though.

The spots are flat and include fire pit, picnic table and food locker. Raccoons apparently are a big problem here so keep your food locked up. There is a small general store/visitor center with a variety of food items, stove fuel, firewood, general camping supplies and souvenirs. WiFi also available for $10 for 7days per device. We paid, but our T-Mobile hotspot with Weboost won out in the end because the WiFi did not reach our spot. There is better reception for the WiFI in other spots. No cell reception with AT&T or Verizon.

The hiking is great! and during the week pleasantly absent of tons of other hikers. Masks are required even on trails when 6 ft distance cannot be maintained, and people were very respectful of that on the trails. There is a lot of wildlife to see though sadly we did not see any condors on this trip. The caves are currently closed due to Covid.

    Other amenities:

    Tent cabins

RV only loop with 30amp hook up only (no sewer or water hook up)

    Showers

    Bathrooms

    Garbage and Recycling

RV dump station (flush water only)

Fresh water filler up (near RV camping area)

    Group camping

    Pool (currently closed)

Pets allowed but NOT allowed on any trails

Overall a great experience for a lesser known National Park, would come here again!

Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country

Really nice place, but lots of rules (maybe that’s why it’s so nice)

We really enjoyed this RV park. For an expensive (to us) place with lots of amenities and lots of rules, it still had a really peaceful, calm, and friendly vibe. The guests were all friendly and chatty, staff was friendly, and the place was really clean and nicely cared for.

With our Passport America discount, we paid $40 (this included tax) for a standard site (on decomposed granite v. the more expensive paved sites). There are also some cottages / small houses available for rent.

Sites have a grill and picnic table and 30 and 50 amp power.

    Amenities:

    - laundry room: $2.75 for wash and $1.50 for dry. Soap dispenser for $1. Iron and ironing board available for use for free. Quarters available in office.

    - Small take a book / leave a book table in laundry room.

    - pool and spa: one open, and one closed for covid

    - fitness room: open

    - clean free showers

    - free cable

    - free wifi (fast!)

    - 2 small enclosed dog yards with gravel and poop bags.

    - fires are allowed, but park doesn't provide fire pits or firewood. Must bring own self-contained fire pit

    - bulk propane fill at $3.50/gal. Filling hours are currently 10am-noon and 2-4pm

    - water bottle filling stations

    - dumpster and mixed recycling bin

    - we saw a skoolie parked here; no rv discrimination!

    - various outdoor hangout areas: bbq, wine bar, etc (closed for covid).

    - small nice store at registration desk with basic food items, ice, camping and rv supplies, gifts and souvenirs

    - playground

No dump station here, and use of sewer connection is for guests only.

Pinnacles Campground — Pinnacles National Park

    Get there early

Great for tent camping and hiking. RV sites have 30 amp hookups. No water or sewer hookups. Dump station was available. RV sites are all gravel and fairly flat. Paying after the store closed at 6pm was an ordeal. Could never make it happen. We tried to log in for 3$ to pay online but it failed and we were never able to connect. Tent sites were secluded, many under shade trees, and well dispersed. Bathrooms were few and far between. Mostly vault toilets. There is a pool that families will enjoy. There is a small store. Walks and hikes are what is available. For a National Park it underwhelmed.

Plaskett Creek Campground - Los Padres National Forest

    Beautiful location

Minimal amenities (to be expected in many state campgrounds) - no electric, no dump station, but there is access to drinking water (community spigots). It’s also right across from a short (.2mile) trail with jaw-dropping views of the bluffs and surrounding mountains. At night all I heard was the ocean and a great horned owl. The one downer: although this is on the edge of the Verizon coverage map, there is NO cell service unless you walk out to the short trail, where you might get a single bar of 1x or 3G. We got nothing with our AT&T hotspot.

    Morro Dunes RV Park

The beach is across the street

Just a short walk over the Dunes to the beach. This RV park has tent and RV sites. The weekly and monthly rates are reasonable for CA. The best time to go is in the fall and winter when it is quieter, with not a lot of campers in the park. Clean bathrooms with hot showers and 3 laundry mat areas. Friendly staff who strive to make your visit the best on the California coast.

Pinnacles Campground — Pinnacles National Park

    A family friendly camp

This campground is right outside of the park, near the visitor center. It’s a convenient campground with plenty of restrooms and they are well maintained. The site we camped at was very spacious (site 3). Its a very family friendly campground, many kids riding their bikes around. From the campground it’s an easy hike into pinnacles, or they have a shuttle that takes you right to the trails. The general store is next to the visitor center so it’s also walking distance for firewood and such. We hiked condor trail which was pretty killer seeing the condors up there. It gets pretty warm out here so definitely plan ahead and go during good weather time. We last minute booked our site for mid May and it actually wasn’t that hot.(low 80s during the day) The hikes are really cool, my favorite hike is bear gulch reservoir through the bear gulch caves trail!

Guide to Fort Hunter Liggett

Fort Hunter Liggett sits in central California's rugged interior, where oak woodlands meet chaparral hills. The area experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and mild winters where overnight temperatures can drop below freezing. RV camping options range from basic parks with electric hookups to full-service resorts with amenities like pools and recreation facilities within driving distance of the military installation.

What to do

Hiking at Pinnacles National Park: Located about 30 minutes from Thousand Trails San Benito, visitors can explore unique rock formations and wildlife. "Pinnacles NP has lots of great hikes, bird watching is a thing out here and home to the California Condors," notes Tyler V., who also mentions it's "a little out of the way but a nice scenic backroad alternate from I5 or 99 if traveling north/south."

Wine tasting tours: The Paso Robles wine region surrounds many RV parks. At Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort, campers can participate in organized wine tours. "We did the wine line and they pick up and drop off at the campground," writes Tonya C., adding convenience for those who want to sample local vineyards safely.

Beach exploration: Morro Bay offers coastal recreation within driving distance. The Morro Dunes RV Park provides direct beach access. "Just a short walk over the Dunes to the beach," writes B B., who adds that "the best time to go is in the fall and winter when it is quieter, with not a lot of campers in the park."

What campers like

Resort-style amenities: Many parks offer features beyond basic camping. "This is a resort style park with all the amenities. We used both pools and spas daily even in December," shares Michael D. about Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country, where travelers appreciate the recreational options regardless of season.

Wildlife viewing: Natural settings provide opportunities to see local animals. At Thousand Trails San Benito, campers report seeing "Condors above our cabin, deer around us, wild pigs crossing the roads," according to Samantha N., who called it "amazing" and the favorite part of her California trip.

Clean facilities: RV parks maintain high standards for bathrooms and common areas. One visitor at Yanks RV Resort notes, "The bathrooms are very private and looks like what you would find in a home. Very impressive." Patrick J. adds that despite the park being 10 years old, "Everything looks new."

What you should know

Varying road conditions: Access to some parks requires careful navigation. When visiting Carmel by the River RV Park, be aware that "the road in is basically a one lane road. Pray you don't encounter oncoming traffic," as Dave N. warns. Another camper advises "definitely DO NOT drive on Lorales Grade! It's a narrow, windy, dark road with a 17% grade."

Temperature fluctuations: The central California climate varies significantly. Michael D. notes that even in December, pools remain usable at Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort. Conversely, at Road's End in Bradley, "The full moon was beautiful and the last night was fantastic for star gazing" due to clear, cold night skies.

Seasonal considerations: Tourism patterns affect availability. B B. recommends visiting Morro Bay "in the fall and winter when it is quieter, with not a lot of campers in the park." During peak seasons, many RV parks near Fort Hunter Liggett require advance reservations.

Tips for camping with families

Multiple recreation options: Look for parks with diverse activities. At Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort, Cassandra R. reports, "The resort is clean, super friendly and has so much more to do than one quick night would fit. Dog parks, kid parks, a pool etc!"

Safe play areas: Some campgrounds provide contained spaces for children. Devon H. notes that Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort has "at least two dog parks" and "a great playground for the kids," making it suitable for families with both children and pets.

Bike-friendly environments: Some parks offer good cycling opportunities for children. At Road's End, one visitor mentioned, "Our younger kids enjoyed riding their bikes around the loop and our dogs had plenty of space to explore," highlighting the open, safe environment.

Tips from RVers

Level sites: Concrete pads improve the camping experience. At Yanks RV Resort, Robert O. appreciates the "large level spots FHU some shade," while John B. describes it as having a "perfect level cement pad."

Hookup quality: Full-service sites offer varying amenities. One camper at Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country explains, "Sites have a grill and picnic table and 30 and 50 amp power," along with cable and WiFi described as "fast!"

Space considerations: Site size varies among parks. At Vines RV Resort, Jonathan G. notes, "Spots are close together like any RV park, but you can tap into full hookups," emphasizing the tradeoff between space and amenities common in RV parks near Fort Hunter Liggett, California.
