Williams Hill Recreation Area permits camping with dogs on its spacious BLM land near Fort Hunter Liggett. All seven designated sites include covered picnic tables and fire rings, with options for both tent and RV camping in a dispersed setting. Pets must remain leashed in developed areas, though many visitors find ample space for dogs to explore the surrounding trails and open spaces. Plaskett Ridge Dispersed Campground also welcomes pets with no fees for overnight stays, providing a more primitive camping experience with ocean views. Campers report abundant opportunities for dog exercise along fire roads and hiking paths. The vault toilets at Williams Hill are surprisingly clean, though no water sources are available for pets or people.

The surrounding area features several additional pet-friendly options including Ponderosa Campground along the Nacimiento River where dogs can splash in the shallow water. Dogs should be kept on leash due to wildlife including bobcats that have been spotted in the vicinity. Pinnacles Campground at Pinnacles National Park also permits pets in developed areas, though dogs are prohibited on most hiking trails within the national park boundaries. Summer visitors should be aware that yellow jackets and wasps can pose hazards to curious pets at several campgrounds, particularly at Williams Hill where they become active early in the morning. Campground hosts generally enforce pet policies but maintain a relaxed atmosphere for responsible dog owners.

      Yanks RV Resort

An Oasis in the Middle of Nowhere

After being on the road for 2 1/2 months this place was just what we needed for a stop over on our way NORTH on 101. Clean everything, perfect level cement pad, large very nice dog park with room for the pups to run and play and a friendly helpful staff. This would be a perfect place to explore Pinnacle National or Hearst Castle. There is nothing near buy, except a Shell station with the lowest diesel prices I’ve seen in California. We ordered dinner from Luigi’s (located in Gonzales) they delivered for free and the food was fantastic. We will definitely stay here again.

      Laguna Seca Recreation Area

      racetrack!

we stayed here for two days while camping in california- it was sweet! we had the whole tent/dry camping campground to ourselves this time of year.

i couldn't find anything about rates online, so if you are trying to figure that out--- it's not the cheapest. dry camping ranges from 40-50$ and full hookup from 50$-60$, though i do think they have discounts for off season (november-....march? not sure.) waking up and watching the open track was super fun. lots of cool trails and viewpoints.

      > good thing to mention, we showered on the third morning. my (male) partners shower was hot, and my (female) shower was so freezing. so maybe showers in the male bathroom, although way grosser, are the move!

Very clean and lots of amenities!

We camped at Cava Robles about 6 months after it opened.  We saw the two pools which were very nice.  Didn't use them because it was too cold (we were there in February).  They also have at least two dog parks and took our high energy dog there to run.  They also have a great playground for the kids.  There is also a little hiking/walking trail around the campground.

      Beautiful new park

Not sure how new this park is but the facilities look very new. Beautiful pads, amenities, and landscaping. Small but clean dog park. Small but clean play area for kids. Pool was up and running in November! Cute sitting area with fireplace. Great stop in the middle of agriculture fields.

Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort

      Beautiful resort

A lot of RV parks use resort in their names but this one deserves it! Large, well spaced sites, beautiful pools, laundry ($2 wash and $2 dry), hot tubs, outdoor common areas, dog parks, clean restrooms with hot showers. We were delighted to stay hear after checking out another RV park just a bit north on 101. Quiet and peaceful. We will be back!

      Laguna Mountain Campground

Hard to Believe This Place is FREE!

This place is so great! It is difficult to find BLM camping in California and this is a gem!

The road is in prone to mudslides and looked like is was recently cleared of mud in multiple spots. Warning though this is the kind of mud that is like clay and has to be scraped off of wheel wells and undercarriage. We collected quite a bit and the underneath of our RV looks like hundreds of stalactites grew and THAT was on the recently cleared spots! The road itself is paved but very potholed, patched and narrow. Be aware of blind corners on weekends when the traffic increases and people fly up the narrow road!

The campground has big flat parking areas for RVs, vans or tents. The individual spots are spaced out nicely and all seemed to have some shade. Also there are covered picnic tables, fire pits and a bathroom which consists of a clean pit toilet. There is NO water, hook ups, or garbage available so don't forget to bring extra water to extinguish your fire as this is a high risk fire zone. Pack in and pack out!

The days and nights are quiet and very relaxing! Bird and wildlife viewing abundant and hiking trails nearby.

There is absolutely NO cell reception at the campground or the road in, NO AT&T, NO Verizon, and NO T-Mobile!

      Will definitely come here again!

    Guide to Fort Hunter Liggett

Dispersed camping options near Fort Hunter Liggett offer varied terrain from coastal ridges to mountain forest settings. The region sits at elevations ranging from sea level along the coast to over 2,500 feet in the Los Padres National Forest interior. Summer temperatures typically reach 85-95°F during the day, while coastal areas remain 10-15 degrees cooler due to marine influence.

    What to do

Beach exploration: 5 miles south of Williams Hill at Plaskett Creek Campground, campers can access Sand Dollar Beach. "We walked across the street to a nice hike around the beach that was beautiful," notes Rachel B. The beach features tide pools and is popular for both relaxation and surfing.

Cave hiking: 45 minutes northeast at Pinnacles Campground, visitors can explore unique bat caves and rock formations. "There are bat caves to explore, lakes and slot canyons. We really enjoyed hiking thru caves and tight places. Super fun for adventurous kids," explains Debi R.

Wildlife viewing: 30 minutes west along the coastal route. "We saw a small bobcat at night driving to the campsite. A 30min drive to the ocean where you can surf or spy starfish," shares Jillean G. about her experience at Nacimiento Campground.

    What campers like

Coastal ridge views: The free Plasket Ridge Dispersed Campground provides panoramic ocean vistas. "Amazing location to wake up in the morning. View of the pacific ocean on one side and valley on the other," writes Ken K. The site requires 4x4 vehicles but rewards with unmatched scenery.

Shaded sites with water access: Many campers appreciate Ponderosa Campground's layout along the Nacimiento River. "Shaded, next to a stream, lots of wildlife, hiking nearby," reports Katie H. The shallow river provides relief during hot summer days.

Stargazing opportunities: The high elevation and distance from city lights make nighttime spectacular. "We were above the marine layer and the stars were something else never seen before," Joe V. shares about Will Creek Road camping areas. Most dispersed sites have minimal light pollution.

    What you should know

Fire restrictions: Summer fire bans are strictly enforced throughout the region. "Campfires are NOT permitted outside of established campgrounds during the summer months. This is crucial to prevent forest fires," reminds Tom Collins through a review at Plaskett Ridge.

Insect activity: San Simeon State Park Campground and other coastal sites have specific wildlife concerns. "There are also ground squirrels that will be up rustling around all night. They are pretty cute during the day though," mentions Carrie A.

Road conditions: Access to several dispersed sites requires careful driving. For Williams Hill, "Our transmission did start heating up as the road was filled with washboard and it was steep and we had to go pretty slow," warns Brett L., though he confirms "any car will be able to make it up there."

    Tips for camping with families

Water planning is essential: Most dispersed sites lack water sources. At Williams Hill Recreation Area, "No water provided up here," Laura M. points out. Bring 1-2 gallons per person per day, plus extra for pets.
