Camping opportunities around Eureka range from coastal sites to redwood-surrounded spaces. The area sits at sea level with most campgrounds below 150 feet elevation, creating foggy, damp conditions with average summer highs of 64°F and winter lows around 41°F. Wind exposure varies significantly between ocean-facing and inland sites.
What to do
Beach exploration at dunes: 10 minutes west of Eureka. At Samoa Boat Ramp County Park, campers can access the BLM Samoa Sand Dunes directly from the parking lot. "This was my first time driving in sand and now I'm obsessed! Driving right up to the beach and water is something I didn't know I NEEDED to do," reports Taylor.
Forest bathing in redwood groves: 30 minutes north. Emerald Forest Cabins & RV offers camping among giant redwoods. One camper describes it as "Fern Gully! The sights are engulfed by giant redwoods and surrounded by ferns, moss and rainforest." The campground provides multiple foot paths through the forest for day hiking.
Tidepooling at local beaches: Various locations within 45 minutes. Sue-meg State Park (formerly Patrick's Point) has extensive tidepools at low tide. "Great hiking and scenery. We had our tent in the trees with a 100 yard walk out to Patrick's point and the Pacific Ocean. Close to Agate beach for stunning views," notes Chad L.
What campers like
Well-maintained facilities despite coastal elements. At Clam Beach County Park, sites are designed to handle coastal weather: "Each site was bordered by logs to not only separate them but also provide a bit of relief in the case of water flowing inland." The campground includes vault toilets and water access.
Water views from multiple angles. Mayumi H. notes about Samoa Boat Ramp: "For a boat ramp camping site near town, this place is special. Remote from town but water 360 degrees. You can hear the ocean while looking at the towns across the water."
Dog-friendly campgrounds near Eureka have ample space. Mad River Rapids RV Park welcomes pets and maintains "spacious, well maintained grounds with friendly and helpful staff." The camp host sells firewood on-site, eliminating the need to transport your own.
What you should know
Winter weather requires preparation. The coastal location means rain and fog are common October through April. "In this area one thing is certain, you can always be certain that rain is just around the bend. With coastal air pushing inland each night fog rolls in each day and with it comes the rain," reports a Clam Beach camper.
Wind exposure affects tent camping comfort. Sites between ocean and bay experience significant wind. At Samoa Boat Ramp County Park, "The wind can get pretty bad as this site sits between the ocean and Humbolt Bay, so be prepared for that."
Pet-friendly policies vary among campgrounds. While most sites welcome dogs, restrictions differ. Mad River Rapids allows pets but has strict rules about where they can be walked, while Shoreline RV Park focuses primarily on RV camping with pets.
Tips for camping with families
Arcade and playground access: 30 minutes north of Eureka. Emerald Forest Cabins & RV offers family-friendly amenities including "a Video Arcade, Horseshoe pit, dog park, celebration hall with board games/puzzles, a mini mart, playground, gazebo, and multiple bath/shower houses."
Avoid highway-adjacent sites with children. Some campgrounds border Highway 101, creating noise issues. One camper at Emerald Forest notes: "Nice amenities and staff, but very loud as the site we were in (96) was right next to highway 101."
Cabin options for rainy conditions. Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort offers cabins as weather alternatives. "The cabins are cute and charming (be prepared, no kitchen) and the grounds clean," notes Rachel A., making this an option for families wanting protection from coastal weather.
Tips from RVers
RV hookup availability varies widely. Shoreline RV Park provides full hookups with clean facilities. "Less than 30 minutes from the Redwoods and the beach. Walking distance to target and a gas station with diesel. Very well kept yards, bathrooms, showers and laundry," reports Chelsea R.
Casino parking options for shorter stays. Blue Lake Casino offers economical overnight RV parking. "Great spot for overnighter! No showers available or toilets at the RV site. There was a free dump and rinse station. It was $11 for the night," says Michelle, noting the option to join their Players Club for discounts.
Site access and leveling challenges. At Emerald Forest, "The needles make for a slippery track, have had some issues backing vans out of deep spots before." Sites at several campgrounds require careful navigation due to tight spacing and natural obstacles.
