Beautiful scenery, central location and clean amenities

I've always loved Sue-Meg/Patricks Point, the trails and Agate Beach were my favorites when I lived locally. Camping here is fun as well and we keep coming back as often as we can. This trip we stayed in site 100 at Agate beach. It wasn't our favorite site that we've stayed at but it was nice. It is quite open to the parking lot for the Agate beach trail and doesn't have much seclusion, so you're really out in the open. You're next to the cabins, which made us slightly jealous we didn't book them for this trip lol. We had our dog with us, which is nice that they are allowed but a bummer that the dogs aren't allowed on any trails in the park. It's also nice how centrally located the park is in Humboldt. It's close enough to Arcata and Eureka that you can head down for food and other trails/activities in the surrounding area.

We got super lucky with the weather, it was sunny and no rain for the 3 days we stayed in April. It was kind of busy this second weekend in April, lots of families and other dogs, but most people were friendly and quiet. The campground next to us had some younger guys who we caught climbing into the trees and sawing off branches for their firewood, which was sad to see.

Besides that it was an amazing weekend at Sue-Meg, I highly recommend the park. :)

Absolutely Perfect

Only stayed one night on a coastal road trip but this place for sure left an impression. Gorgeous views. Great campground. Great weather. We heard a bear in the night, and raccoons everywhere around our tents. The only negative is the trails are not dog friendly. Which is a shame because I would love to go ‘splorin here. I will definitely be back. Soon.

Coastal camping deep in the redwoods

General: Five campgrounds – Agate, Abalone, Penn (tents only), and two group campgrounds (Red Alder and Beach Creek) situated just north of Trinidad.

Site Quality: Not all sites are created equal. Many are not level; we had a challenge in Site 123 and saw a few others in the same situation. Fortunately, we changed our sleeping position (we don’t carry levelers for our van) and parked sideways. We did see some larger RVs but many of the sites would be challenging for large rigs to fit. The sites themselves are very generous in size with a large picnic table and fire ring and plenty of room to set up a tent. Many trees separate the sites, providing privacy. There are no hookups at any of the sites.

Bathhouse: The bathhouse was very basic with concrete floors, three small stalls, and two sinks with cold water only. Soap is provided but no dryers, paper towels, hooks, or shelves. Clean enough. Only one bathhouse in the Agate Loop had showers. I have no idea how many minutes each quarter will buy you in the shower as this information was scratched off, however, just the fact that you can use 15 quarters tells me not very long. I didn’t attempt to try it.

Activities: There is a nice rim trail that will lead you to various points. Wedding Rock, Ceremonial Rock, Mussel Rock, and both Patrick’s Point and Palmer’s Point. Palmer’s Point is where you can explore tidepools at low tide (the times are posted as you enter the campground). The wildflowers along the trails were beautiful. Several other trails take you to Sumeg Village and Agate Beach. Although we saw many dogs while there, be aware that many of the trails do not allow dogs. While there was good signage on most of the trails, I did manage to get lost a few times while wandering around. California may not invest in many other campground upgrades, but they do spend money on signs!

Two nights here was the perfect amount of time to explore what Patrick’s Point has to offer. This was the very first campground we stayed at where campfires were allowed as the fog is so thick that fire danger was not an issue. However, there must have recently been a price increase for wood as the price was scratched off the sign; it is $10 per bundle. A shout out to the two rangers who had great attitudes and were tons of fun to interact with!

Camping style for everyone

This is a gorgeous campground in a state park with something for everyone’s level. I stayed in cabins near agate beach, and also a campsite with tent earlier in campground near entrance. Reservations recommended. Hikes along the coast, more difficult ones up and down to beaches and coastline, paved paths for walks, proper bathrooms, showers, water. Near town of Trinidad for pizza always a plus

Patrick was almost on point

We stopped here as it was one of the only places near Trinidad. It was your typical state park camp ground with nearby bathrooms, fire pit, picnic table, and water. One thing to note is that there wasn’t a grey water disposal area. There are several campgrounds and we stayed at the Agate Beach one which had nice trail down to the beach.

The area was very quiet and dark. The pull-in we were at had a nice spot for tent camping. We showed up last minute and there were several spaces available. There is a placard that shows which spaces are available and you can flip it once you park. We picked a spot, flipped the card, and went to go pay at the kiosk. $35/night and cash/check only. I wish I would’ve knew this coming from Oregon.

It was an ok typical state park but I probably won’t stay here again if I had other options.

10/10 Would stay again!

[ PROS]

  • Super lush and foresty campground right by the Pacific Ocean. There is so much to see all around the campgrounds. You can go for a hike and the Rim Trail which perimeters the park, you can go down to the beach and hunt for agates, explore tidepools, look at birds and other wildlife, and go to the visitor center.

  • Each site came with a picnic table, bear box, fire ring, and two parking spots.

  • Sites were surprisingly large! We stayed at Site#99 and it was super spacious. It even had a hidden area that was under large trees that was perfect for setting up tents.

  • I love how the sites were also very private. Each site seemed to be carved out of the brush so you’re just enclosed in trees and bushes. Everything was so green!

  • The restrooms were really clean. Site#99 was a little far from the showers, but we had nice toilets right by us.

  • VIEWS VIEWS VIEWS! My gosh. We stated at Agate Campground (1 of 3 campgrounds at this park) and it was really close to the beach access. We did the Rim Trail hike and it was unbelievable.

[CONS]

  • NONE! Perfect campground:)

Overall, I would come back here in a heartbeat! I know we came during off season so the campground wasn’t as full, but i’d imagine when this place is fully booked it would still be very tranquil and peaceful. Each site was like a little oasis removed from everyone else.

Gorgeous Views and beach access

Another great Northern Coastal Redwoods campground! This awesome site is located on bluffs right above Agate Beach which is accessed via a steep walking trail. Once on the beach you can enjoy searching for agates, shells, and other cool ocean finds, along with frequent wildlife viewing. We even saw a whale not 15 ft from the shore! The weather can of course be hit or miss on the coast, but despite it the Beauty of this coastal area still shines through.

The campground is pleasant with large sites that include fire pits, picnic tables, and plenty of forested privacy. We had a blast cruising around the campground on our bikes.

Big Ferns, Beautiful Views, and lots of Redwood Love

This is one of my all time favorite places to stay in the coastal redwoods! When we visited, it was quiet and peaceful. We were there during the week so we didn't get a lot of traffic. Felt like we had the place to ourselves.

The trees provided us with plenty of shade and protection for the tiny rainstorm that came over us.

The bathrooms were well cared for, the camp hosts were personable and very helpful with information on what to see. We ended up spending most of our time searching for serpentinite on agate beach.

Agate Campground

Recently camped at the Agate Campground, spot 87, which was located at the top of the road towards the beach trail. It was a convenient and mysterious site. Mysterious because our tent was nestled in a sort-of-like hobbit hole nestled in the trees. The proximity of the showers/toilets were within 200ft of the site. The camp host was also in this area, and they sold wood; however, the wood we purchased was way too wet to burn. Showers are $1.00 for 10 minutes, which is plenty of time to clean up. There are flushing toilets with adequate toilet paper, but make sure to bring hand soap...it’s not here. The views are SPECTACULAR, and the overall inhale is worth the trip!

This is one of the nicest and quietest California State Parks in the system. The individual sites are separated by foliage and everything is green. The walk to Agate Beach is a must, where you can find interesting drift wood and other interesting beachcombing stuff. Need to reserve your campsite early, however you might luck out if you just show up. The staff is very friendly.

Beautiful View of Agate Beach

This is an awesome campground north of Eurika CA. They have several sites, but it is a very popular campground so book in advance. The walk down to Agate beach is a long one, down a lot of steps. It is worth it though. I could lay in the sand for ever looking for agates. Make sure to check the tide tables, the bottom steps on the trail are sometimes under water during a high tide.

Everything you could ask for in a state park

It would be so easy to drive right past the turnoff for this park on your way down the coast. I'm glad we didn't make that mistake! The coastline scenery is exceptional, and the park offers a nice variety of activities: beachcombing, short or long hikes, scenic overlooks, paved loops for kids to bike around, and so on. We were lucky enough to see a pod of whales frolicking within easy eyesight of shore, even though it wasn't the whale migration season.

The campsites are tucked into little pockets scattered around the park, which gives it a really nice uncrowded feeling, much better than being shoulder-to-shoulder with every other camper in the place. Highly recommend this park for either a day trip or overnight.
