Agate Beach access and rim trail hiking draw campers to this walk-in campground within Sue-meg State Park, where sites sit tucked among towering trees just above the Pacific coastline. The park's location north of Trinidad puts visitors within reach of tide pooling, agate hunting, and whale watching opportunities along the dramatic Humboldt County shore.
Large sites provide generous space for tents and gear, with many carved into natural clearings that offer privacy between neighbors. Lee D. notes "many trees separate the sites, providing privacy" while describing the spacious layouts that include picnic tables, fire rings, and bear boxes. Site selection matters here—some spots sit closer to parking areas while others nestle deeper into the forest canopy.
The rim trail system connects campers to Wedding Rock, Ceremonial Rock, and multiple coastal viewpoints, with separate paths leading down to Agate Beach and the reconstructed Sumeg Village. Tide pool exploration works best at low tide, with posted schedules available at the entrance. Wildlife sightings include whales visible from shore overlooks, plus bears and raccoons that frequent the campground after dark.
Access involves navigating rough park roads that can challenge larger RVs, though the campground accommodates rigs up to 30 feet with full hookups at $35 per night. The single bathhouse serves the Agate loop with coin-operated showers and basic facilities. Campers should bring quarters for hot water and expect cold-water-only sinks. Firewood costs $10 per bundle from camp hosts, though some visitors report purchasing wet wood that burns poorly.
Chanel C. sums up the experience: "Perfect campground:) Overall, I would come back here in a heartbeat!" The combination of coastal access, forest privacy, and trail variety makes this campground work well for tent campers and smaller RVs seeking a base for exploring the northern California coast.
