Cazadero sits in a redwood canyon just 7 miles from the Russian River and 13 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate with dry summers reaching 85°F and foggy, wet winters where temperatures can drop to 35°F. Most campgrounds near Cazadero remain open year-round, though winter camping requires preparation for potentially muddy conditions at riverside sites.
What to do
Russian River recreation: swimming and floating: At Schoolhouse Canyon Campground, the river is just across the street through a trail. "Very nice water for floating and swimming, with a cute little beach area to keep your stuff," notes Amber D., who adds that river shoes are essential for comfort. Inner tubes are available for rent at $5 per day.
Coastal hiking: miles of trails: Stillwater Cove Regional Park offers hiking trails through redwoods to reach the beach. "It was a nice walk through the redwoods to the actual Stillwater cove. The trailhead is in the day use area," explains Michael C. The park also features a one-mile cliffside hiking trail connecting Ocean Cove to Stillwater Cove.
Tidepooling and marine life observation: Shell Beach near Fort Ross offers excellent tidepooling opportunities at low tide. "The camp host posts the tides at the campsite," shares Michael C. from Stillwater Cove. At Ocean Cove, "at low tide there was so much sea life for my son and I to explore," reports Cecil K., recommending river shoes for comfort.
What campers like
Private beaches for campground guests: Ocean Cove Store and Campground provides exclusive beach access. "They own a large beach across the road and is only open to schoolhouse guests so it's not too crowded and all familiar faces," explains Seneca E. The beach areas are typically uncrowded even during peak summer months.
Spacious campsites under tree canopy: Many campers praise the ample space at Casini Ranch Family Campground. "Sites are HUGE! We had plenty of room for our trailer, tent, corn hole, and more," reports Dustin C. Schoolhouse Canyon sites feature "a nice large flat area for the tent" with sites situated "under tall trees with plenty of cool shade."
Dog-specific amenities: Some dog friendly campgrounds near Cazadero offer dedicated spaces for pets. James from Casini Ranch noted "The dog parks were clutch, since my dog needs to run." At Stillwater Cove, dogs are welcome for "a charge of $2 each dog per night," according to Trevor M. Most parks require pets to stay on leash outside designated exercise areas.
What you should know
Coastal weather fluctuations: Prepare for changing conditions at Bodega Dunes Campground. "Weather was as to be expected for near the coast, but sheltered enough from the wind," notes Dustin C. Coastal sites experience significant evening cooling, often dropping 20-30 degrees after sunset.
Site selection matters: At many campgrounds, site selection greatly impacts your experience. "The sites closest to the entrance have the most privacy, the sites in the back are good for large groups and families and are noisier than the sites up front," explains Amber D. about Schoolhouse Canyon. Similarly, at Ocean Cove, "many of the tent sites are tucked away in little nooks and crannies for privacy if you don't want the more open outer ring sites."
Limited cell service: Connectivity varies widely between campgrounds. At Stillwater Cove, "there is no cell service nor wifi at the campground. We had to drive about a mile north to pick up a signal," reports Michael C. Many coastal sites have limited or no reception, while riverside campgrounds typically offer better connectivity.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Wright's Beach Campground offers natural play areas. "There are tons of hills for kids to play on," mentions Kayla L. At Bodega Dunes, "this is a great place for family, kids rode bikes all weekend. Nobody was too loud or partying late," shares Dustin C.
Water safety considerations: The Russian River provides safer swimming than ocean beaches. At Schoolhouse Canyon, "the gravel beach area is great for little waders (River shoes are a must though)," advises Derrick M. Ocean beaches like Wright's Beach require closer supervision due to "rocks and huge waves" making them "not really a swimmable beach."
Campground noise levels: For families seeking quieter environments, Schoolhouse Canyon offers an adult-only section. "Lower half is family section and the upper section is adults only," explains Kenneth S., noting that "This is a quiet campsite. Radios aren't allowed, so if you are looking to party late into the night this isn't the spot for you."
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Full hookups are available at selected pet-friendly campgrounds near Cazadero. At Porto Bodega Marina & RV Park, "We spent two days there, full hook-up with cable TV decent TV reception too. Cell worked well," reports Chris C. Stillwater Cove offers "Full electric hookups optional at specific spaces. Water access on site as well."
Campsite surface conditions: Many coastal campgrounds have challenging surfaces. At Bodega Dunes, Michael I. warns: "I have to confess that I feel pretty silly for not being as prepared for the sand as I should have been from the name of the campground. Who would have thought!? We walked around sites 22-55 and all seem to be entirely on the sand. Come prepared to deal with sand."
Dump station locations: Not all campgrounds offer dump stations. Noah L. from Casini Ranch notes "very clean bathrooms and friendly staff. Everything went very smoothly." Some campgrounds like Bodega Dunes direct RVers to nearby facilities: "No water fill up (there are a couple of spigots) but fill and dumping are available at Bodega Dunes," explains Debbie M. about Wright's Beach.
