Petit Jean State Park — Petit Jean State Park

      Phenomenal Vacation!

We stayed a week at Petit Jean in one of their gorgeous cabins. It was a wonderful experience that I would highly recommend. The check-in and check-out was easy. Finding the cabin was easy with the directions and map we were given. They were clearly marked, with parking for two vehicles, as they were setup like a duplex. The cabin was beautiful and clean, inside and out. There was a large, heavy, all wood porch swing on each side. Relaxing in it was a peaceful experience, listening to the sounds of birds and the breeze through the tall pines. Inside it was all beautifully stained wood and roomy enough for two people, much like a hotel room, except for the cathedral ceiling. In fact, the setup was better than most hotel rooms we have stayed in. There was a mini-fridge with a small freezer, microwave, coffee pot(with coffee, cups, creamer, sugar, etc,) a Keurig, blow-dryer, iron, ironing board, and broom. It had all the toiletries: soap, shampoo, conditioner, tissue, cups. The open closet had plenty of shelving and hangers for clothing and bags. The bathroom was standard with water that quickly got hot for your bath or shower. There were two full size beds with comfortable mattresses, plenty of pillows and warm bedding, with a nightstand between. There were plugs to charge your phone and a landline. There was also a fireplace, however it was locked closed. The air unit in the room had cooling/heating that was easy to operate and sufficiently cool. We were near the highway, close to the lodge, but did not hear traffic while in the cabin. Parking at Mather Lodge is just like any other, with a short, easy walk to the entrance. Once inside, you pass the check-in desk, a small, well-stocked gift shop,(with something for every age,) an open meeting area and bar before reaching the restaurant. It is beautifully constructed from large logs stained and polished to a gleaming shine. From floor to ceiling, it is the epitome of rugged elegance. We ate breakfast and dinner exclusively at the lodge. The food was exemplary, every meal, cooked to perfection and delicious. The atmosphere was relaxing and we were never rushed or made to feel as if we overstayed our welcome. The service was fast, even when every table was occupied. The servers were friendly and attentive. We had only one server, one time that was"less than," maybe she was new, not sure, but we did not see her again. Tommy, Thomas, Jessie, Brad, Rebekah, and Lindsay were all so pleasant, always greeting us, even when they weren't our servers, remembering us and making us feel like family. The view of the gorge with it's tall trees and towering rock formations was incredible! There was a common area behind the lodge, just outside the restaurant with tables, chairs and benches for observing the gorge, taking photos, relaxing and socializing. You could walk right down to the edge of the huge flat rocks for photos with a stunning background. We spent every evening there, watching the exquisite sunsets. This place is a nature lovers paradise. There is a pool surrounded by loungers behind and to the side of the lodge. It was clean and well-kept with a small waterfall at one end. Thick thirsty towels are provided for your convenience. The grounds are beautifully maintained. We never saw or heard a mower but the grass was cut to perfection and there wasn't a single piece of litter in the entire park. At check-in we were given a map, brochure and weekly schedule of events/tours at the park. The map was very necessary for navigating around this extensive park of which the lodge area was only a small part. The brochure described the hikes and other available activities(such as climbing and repelling) with descriptions of what could be observed, length and difficulty levels. Trust the brochure! If it says strenuous, it is. Plan accordingly. There were four ranger guided tours the week we were there. We took two of them. They were genuinely interesting and pleasurable. Baron, our ranger, was exceedingly knowledgeable about the geology, animal and plant life and history of the area. Exceptionally so, for someone who was seemingly so young. He was attentive to the needs of those attending the tours, stopping to rest if necessary and moving a bit slower for us older folks. He was so affable and easy to talk with, it seemed as if we were old friends. Willing to spend extra time after the tours, talking with us, was an indication of how much he enjoyed his job. We were very appreciative of someone of his character and enjoyed spending time with him. He is the perfect model of what one would think a park ranger is and should be! Any hike can be taken unguided and there are plenty of them. In fact, we had plans to go outside the park on other hikes, but never made it off the property for those. We actually did not have enough time to do all we wanted to do within the park. If you are looking for a phenomenal vacation, this is the trip you should take!

Petit Jean State Park — Petit Jean State Park

      Arkansas's first state park

Well maintained state park especially for its age. All sites have a picnic table, ground grill, and tent pad. Roads and campsites are paved. Nicely spaced sites. Clean bathhouse.

Crystal Ridge RV Park at Ron Coleman Mine

      Nicest people

We stayed in the tini cabin because it was 98* out, and we were sun burnt from digging crystals. It had an AC, shower, full bathroom, kitchen, TV, a charcoal grill with charcoal, and the camp host brought over fire wood with no charge.

Forest Service RD 132 Ouachita National Forest

      Great view

It was a little tough coming in from the north. There was trees down and messed my brackets on my solar up. I wouldn’t suggest anything larger than an extended van. The view is awesome and really peaceful

Base of North Fork Pinnacle Dispersed, Forest Road 132

      Quiet Spot for Undisturbed Camping

This is a great quiet spot to pitch a tent or bring a moderate sized camper in. Whoever was here last supplied the fire pits with kindling, there is plenty of wood from fallen trees around to build a nice campfire. Not a single person hiked or drove by in the roughly 16 hours I was here. Would recommend!

      Haw Creek Falls Camping

      Really popular spot

We spent one night here. It was a little bit of trouble to get to, as I'm not a fan of driving in the mountains. It had a nice fire ring and a picnic table. There are 2 vault toilets here, not the worst we've seen. They did have toilet paper. Super cute but very shallow swimming hole, maybe 3 ft deep? Very popular too. Seemed every site was full when we pulled through to check it out, so we picked the only open spot, #1. But when we left at 10 am, only one other campsite was occupied so I think they were just daytime guests. We walked downstream a lot looking at small fish in the little pools and we "swam" in the swimming hole, it was nice bc it was hot. Beautiful scenery. No service for my phone.

    Guide to Dardanelle

Camping sites near Dardanelle, Arkansas sit at elevations ranging from 330 to 1,800 feet, offering diverse terrain experiences along Lake Dardanelle and the Arkansas River. Nuclear evacuation signs mark the area due to the nearby nuclear power plant at Russellville. Winter temperatures typically range from 30-50°F while summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F with high humidity.

    What to do

Hiking trails: Mount Nebo State Park Campground offers several trails ranging from easy to strenuous. "The Rim Trail is just that…a 3 1/2 mile trail running the top rim of the mountain, with long views. There are two distinct areas of the 'Rim Trail' that can be driven to…to capture those special photos…Sunset Point and Sunrise Circle," notes one visitor.

Visit waterfalls: The trails at Petit Jean State Park lead to impressive water features. "The video is of the roaring falls. There is not typically so much flow. We were lucky! We spent most of our days hiking the many trails the park is known for," reports a camper who visited after heavy rains.

Boat and fish: Lake access points near campsites provide water recreation opportunities. "If you have a boat, you can take it out on Piney Bay. There are no rentals (we would have loved it if kayak rentals were available)," explains a visitor to Piney Bay campground, noting the lack of rental equipment.

    What campers like

Private shower facilities: Russellville Campground at Lake Dardanelle State Park offers uncommonly private bathroom facilities. "Not only was it clean but it had six doors. Behind each door was a shower room complete with a toilet and lavatory and guess what? It was air conditioned!" shares a camper who appreciated this unusual feature.

Waterfront camping: Old Post Road provides sites with direct river access. "The lock and dam was a neat site to look at along with the view of Dardanelle Rock across the river," writes a camper who enjoyed the distinctive riverside location.

Cooling summer options: Mount Nebo State Park provides relief from summer heat with higher elevation and additional amenities. "State park with swimming pool in summer. Playground and swings for young ones. Several hammock friendly sites. Hang gliders frequently use the bluffs to launch," notes one camper about the elevated park's cooler temperatures.

    What you should know

Road accessibility limitations: The winding road to Mount Nebo restricts certain vehicles. "At the base of the climb, signs posted numerous times, 'Crooked and Steep, no trailers over 24 ft'. I have driven up a lot of steep and twisty mountain roads, and these warnings are to be heeded. Grades are up to 18%," advises one visitor.

Bathroom facilities vary significantly: Campground bathroom quality differs across locations. "The showers are not very private other than a nasty mildewed shower curtain, but there is nowhere to dry off or dress that is private. The showers were nasty on the weekend that we went," reports a camper about one of the less maintained facilities.

Wildlife considerations: Bears and venomous snakes inhabit the region, requiring proper precautions. "There are bear in this area, and precautions are taken by the park. Park staff informed us of numerous venomous reptilian, too…so be aware on the trails, or if you choose to wander off them," warns a visitor to Piney Bay.

    Tips for camping with families

Book loop preferences early: Reserve specific loops when traveling with children. "RESERVE EARLY to get a spot in Loop A or Loop B. We stayed in Loop C and I felt a little too secluded. The sites in C & D appeared to be a little smaller," advises a family camper at Petit Jean State Park.

Plan for shade: Consider seasonal sun exposure when selecting campsites. "Old Post Road pros: plenty of shade in hot months with the pine grove," notes a camper, while another warns about different conditions elsewhere: "A loop cons: very little shade. Would be rough in summer months without shade tents, awnings, etc."

Check amenities for kids: Ivy's Cove RV Retreat provides facilities specifically for children. "Nice level pull-through lots. Hot showers, laundry, small play area. Very quiet except for the birds that wake you in the morning. Close to town but feels like the country," shares a visitor who appreciated the dedicated play space.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for privacy: Choose sites based on layout and spacing. "Each site has two parking spots, one for your Camper or RV and another for a boat or an extra vehicle. With easy access to the lake this is a nice convenience if you like to boat and camp for several days," explains a camper at Old Post Road.

Full hookup availability: Identify campgrounds with complete services. "So unusual for a state park to have full hookups including 50 amp service and sewer," notes a visitor to Petit Jean about the less common utility options in the region.

Water connection challenges: Some sites have awkward utility placements. "Many sites have water and the picnic table on the opposite sides of the camper. It's purely inconvenient and I'm not sure why this is this way. Pay attention when you book your site to campsite photos," advises an RV camper at Petit Jean State Park.
