The Ouachita Mountains surrounding Paron, Arkansas range in elevation from 650 to 2,700 feet, creating diverse terrain for cabin accommodations. Winter temperatures typically drop to the 30s, while summer can reach the mid-90s with high humidity. Cabin options span from primitive forest settings to lakefront properties with panoramic water views.
What to do
Hiking to waterfalls: Follow the Falls Branch Trail at Lake Catherine State Park for a moderate hike leading to a scenic waterfall. "The waterfall was flowing a little on the low side. That's not unusual since it is the end of summer," notes Tina B. about her Lake Catherine State Park Campground experience.
Crystal digging: Ron Coleman Mining offers crystal hunting opportunities just steps from Crystal Ridge RV Park. "For $20 you can go spend the day diggin through dirt and finding crystals. I don't think everyone has the luck we had but we came after a rain and cleaned up. Hundred bucks in gems," shares Justin M. at Crystal Ridge RV Park.
Hammock relaxation: Petit Jean State Park provides excellent hammock spots among the trees. "This is a great campground back in the trees. It was raining and we didn't get that wet due to the tree coverage," explains Sondra M. from her stay at Petit Jean State Park.
What campers like
Seasonal variety: Fall and spring are prime seasons for cabin stays with cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. "If in Arkansas, Petit Jean State Park is a must. With a ton of trails, lodge, restaurant, and waterfalls it is a nature lovers dream," writes Andrew S. about his experience.
Private waterfront sites: Many cabins offer direct lake access with fishing opportunities. "We had a site overlooking the lake. We had plenty of room to hang our hammocks and play yard games. There is an additional tent pad available if needed," shares Alison C. about Lake Catherine State Park Campground.
Accessible boat rentals: Several parks offer affordable boat and kayak rentals for water exploration. "We enjoyed the hiking trails and rented a few kayaks. It's a great lake for kayaking as the water was calm and there were only a couple of boats on the water," adds another Lake Catherine visitor.
What you should know
Loop selection matters: Certain camping loops offer better sites for cabin access. "RESERVE EARLY to get a spot in Loop A or Loop B. We stayed in Loop C and I felt a little too secluded. The sites in C & D appeared to be a little smaller," advises Shana D. from Petit Jean State Park.
Cabin availability varies: Most cabin rentals require advanced booking, especially during peak seasons. "The cabins are beyond wonderful to stay in and well worth the price. Beautiful scenery and tons of activities for the whole family to enjoy," reports Josh H. about Lake Ouachita State Park.
Winter accessibility: Unlike tent camping, cabin rentals remain available year-round, though some park amenities close seasonally. "We're already ready to plan another trip here during the summer so we can utilize the boat house and a few other amenities that are closed during the off season. Well worth a fall visit though," notes a Petit Jean visitor.
Tips for camping with families
Educational programs: Many state parks offer ranger-led activities for children. "The rangers were great and offered a variety of informational classes and hikes. We will be back!" mentions Josh H. from Lake Ouachita State Park.
Kid-friendly adventure options: Some parks feature playground facilities and easy hiking paths. "Kid friendly. Great upkeep and sites that are easily accessible. Playground, splash pad, and pool," reports Bridget C. about Catherine's Landing.
Family gaming areas: Several parks include disc golf courses or other outdoor game options. "A paradise for everyone! The property is so peaceful and quiet. We came with little kids and they explored their hearts out. Along the river there's a trail and fun places for the kids to play and play," shares Lauren N. about Catherine's Landing.
Tips from RVers
Full hookup access: Some cabins offer RV-style utility connections for convenience. "We ended up in site #30. It had a beautiful view of the lake. It's was also a plus to have full hookups including 50 amp service and sewer. So unusual for a state park," explains Jill B. from Petit Jean State Park.
Off-season quiet: Late fall through early spring offers the most peaceful cabin experiences. "We peeked into one of the cabins and they look really nice. They also have camper cabins that have heat/air but no bathroom," notes a visitor at Hot Springs National Park KOA.
Laundry considerations: Limited laundry facilities exist at most cabin locations. "The bathrooms and showers are very clean and at $1.50 per load the laundromat was one of the least expensive I've seen (and the dryers were great!)" shares Lori C. about Catherine's Landing.
