Spencer Canyon Campground sits at 7,900 feet elevation on Mount Lemmon, offering 60+ pet-friendly campsites under pine trees. Dogs are welcome throughout the campground with proper leash control and waste management. Each site includes a fire pit, picnic table, and bear box for secure food storage. The campground provides clean vault toilets and water spigots placed strategically throughout the grounds. Mount Bigelow Dispersed camping area nearby also allows pets with fewer amenities but more privacy between sites. The bathrooms at Spencer Canyon are exceptionally well-maintained despite being vault toilets. Campground hosts sell firewood on site and enforce quiet hours to ensure a peaceful experience for all guests including those with pets.

Several dog-friendly hiking trails connect directly to the campgrounds, allowing campers to explore the Santa Catalina Mountains with their pets. Whitetail Campground, located approximately 5 miles from Summerhaven, provides excellent group sites for families camping with dogs in a setting with natural springs and creeks. Campers should be aware that wildlife including deer and skunks frequent the area, requiring careful pet management especially at night. The temperature difference between Tucson and the Mount Lemmon campsites can be 15-20 degrees cooler, making summer months ideal for escaping the heat with pets. Fire restrictions change seasonally, so visitors should check current regulations before planning campfires. During winter months, roads to dispersed camping areas can become icy and impassable even with four-wheel drive vehicles.

Coronado National Forest Molino Basin Campground

      Convenient location

Great spot between Tucson and Mount Lemmon. Far enough down to stay warm in the winter. First come first serve and it was pretty empty at 5pm.

      Gorgeous Views!

Beautiful campground nested in the trees on Mount Lemmon. Great escape from Phoenix. The breeze was amazing and the trees gave alot of shade. We hiked and spend about 3 nights here. We were 15 people and had a could of sites right next to eachother. Sites are a good size for a paid campground, not small like most others.

      Rincon Country East RV Resort

Peaceful pleassures in the desert mountains.

Staying at Rincon Country East has proved to be a fantastic choice for us.  The level of silence both day and especially night is a bit of heaven.  Thoughtfull staff and campers makes for a most pleasant stay.  The mountain views greet us constantly here.  Mount Lemmon is a short drive or bike ride away with snow capped top and great food offerings.  Skying is possible for those with young legs.  The bike situation in Tucson is the finest we have encountered.  Our electric bikes can run forever on the well paved trails all over the county.   Tucson is an easy town to drive around with good shopping and dinning.  So happy with our snowbird park pick!

      Spencer Canyon Campground

Lovely Mountain Campground in the Pines

This campground is walk up only with over 60 sites to choose from. Several sites are double or group size. This is the highest National Forest campground on Mount Lemmon and your best bet for cooler temps during the summer. Parking can be limited with only a few of the sites having adequate parking for trailers up to 22 feet. Your best bet for a good site for the weekend is to get there on Thursday or early Friday.

      Molino Basin Campground

      Great Campground

This campground is very well maintained with nice restrooms. There are a few sites, including the one we were at, that are back a little ways from the road and you have to walk in to get to them. We went in February and it was warm and beautiful here. The campground was not crowded at all. There are hiking trails out here, you can check out the Gordon Hirabayashi campground and the old work camp remains which are pretty interesting. Also, if you want to drive up to the top of Mount Lemmon, it's a beautiful and scenic drive. On your way back into town, you can stop at the Agua Caliente park where you'll find tons of palm trees surrounding a peaceful pond.

    Guide to Mount Lemmon

Mount Lemmon dispersed camping sites range from 5,000 to 9,000 feet elevation across the Santa Catalina Mountains. Temperatures at dispersed sites drop approximately 3-4 degrees for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain compared to Tucson. Fire restrictions change seasonally with complete bans common from May through monsoon season.

    What to do

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds feature regular wildlife sightings including wild turkeys, deer, javelina, and cotamundi. At Peppersauce Campground, campers report abundant wildlife encounters. "We saw deer and javelina and birds" according to Kathleen M., while Emma J. notes, "Both mornings we woke up to the sound of wild turkeys checking out our setup."

Fishing at stocked lakes: Rose Canyon Lake provides trout fishing opportunities during warmer months. Rose Canyon Campground offers easy access to the lake. Tanner H. shares that "Rose canyon lake is stocked with trout for some easy and fun fishing and camping. Gets crowded during times when lake is stocked."

Mountain biking access: Redington Pass dispersed camping area provides direct access to mountain biking trails. Ashley M. notes that there's "Mountain biking just up the road" from the camping sites. The area connects to trail systems that run throughout the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Arizona Trail sections: Multiple segments of the 800-mile Arizona Trail pass near Mount Lemmon campgrounds. Go Play Outside Family G. reports from Molino Basin Campground: "On our first night we walked down to the empty group site to pick up part of the Arizona Trail for a quick hike before dinner."

    What campers like

Temperature relief: The dramatic elevation change from Tucson provides natural air conditioning in summer months. Ethan B. comments about Mount Bigelow Dispersed camping: "It was gorgeous. Bunch of hiking trails near by, and perfect temperatures in the summer heat."

Night sky views: The higher elevation and distance from city lights create exceptional stargazing conditions. Amelio S. describes their experience at Rose Canyon: "When night time came, the stars were amazing. No light pollution there with unobstructed views of the night skies."

Privacy between sites: Some campers seek more secluded options away from established campgrounds. Kati H. found that at Redington Pass "our site was more secluded, and it was very peaceful and serene at times."

Well-maintained facilities: Camp hosts at several pet-friendly campgrounds maintain exceptional facilities. At Gilbert Ray Campground, Chet W. reports: "Rest rooms were clean and well maintained. Make reservations as this Campground is popular. Camping area ground host was really great."

    What you should know

Seasonal closures: Many Mount Lemmon campgrounds close during winter months due to snow and ice conditions. Daniel G. experienced this at Mount Bigelow: "We got to the parking area about 7:40 PM on November 10th. Started up the road to the campsite about 2 miles further up the mountain but at about 1/2 mile the road was so icy that we lost traction."

Reservation requirements: Established campgrounds fill quickly during peak seasons. Christina C. notes for Spencer Canyon Campground: "This campground is walk up only with over 60 sites to choose from... Your best bet for a good site for the weekend is to get there on Thursday or early Friday."

Traffic issues: Some campgrounds experience vehicle traffic from nearby facilities or recreational users. At Peppersauce Campground, Kathleen M. reports: "Starting just after 6 am until after midnight... there is non-stop traffic" due to a nearby academy for troubled teens.

Variable amenities: Amenities differ significantly between established and dispersed sites. Suzanne P. shares about Spencer Canyon: "Bathrooms are clean, bear boxes are provided, and If you want a break from camp food you can jet up to summerhaven it's not that far and grab lunch."

    Tips for camping with families

Group sites availability: For larger family groups, Whitetail Campground offers dedicated group camping areas with additional amenities. One camper shares: "This is mine and my family's favorite place to stay when we go to Mount Lemmon. You can park right near your campsite and this site is only 5 miles from Summerhaven."

Kid-friendly exploration areas: Natural features provide engagement for children at several dog-friendly campgrounds. Brianna W. recommends Peppersauce: "Perfect area for kids to explore and see wildlife. We spotted both turkeys and deer and were visited by some cotamundi as well."

Stream access sites: Families with kids often prefer sites near water features. Suzanne P. recommends: "I prefer to go all the way to the very bottom of the campground. There is a lot of open area for my boys to run around and build a fort while I read a book next to the stream."

Nature education opportunities: Several campgrounds provide opportunities to learn about desert ecosystems. Elizabeth M. shares about Rose Canyon: "I stayed 2 nights with my dog and it was a fantastic experience. The lake was beautiful, the creek made for lovely hiking, and the campsite hosts were friendly and helpful."

    Tips from RVers

RV length limitations: Spencer Canyon has limited spaces for larger vehicles. Dray S. explains: "Parking can be limited with only a few of the sites having adequate parking for trailers up to 22 feet."

Leveling challenges: Uneven terrain can make RV setup difficult at some sites. Angela G. reports about Redington Pass: "These spots, although they are more like small side-of-the-road pulloffs than campsites, are definitely better suited for conversion vans or truckbed campers, as every space we saw was very uneven and sandy."

Road condition awareness: Access roads to dispersed camping areas require careful navigation. Talia R. shares: "It was a little rough going up with a travel trailer. I didn't see the trailer parking to unhook and scout. I found a pull off on the left after mile marker 5. You cannot camp until you pass mile maker 4.6."

Site selection tips: For RVers seeking established campgrounds with hookups, Tucson Lazydays KOA offers full amenities. Ted S. notes: "Lazydays offers just about anything you want, big small, covered, uncovered, just name it. The sites are well set up with a table and benches and they are clean."
