Best Campgrounds near Central, AZ

The Safford area of central Arizona encompasses diverse camping environments ranging from desert lowlands to high mountain forests. Roper Lake State Park, located just south of Safford, offers three developed campgrounds with full hookup sites, cabins, and tent camping areas around a small fishing lake. The surrounding Pinaleño Mountains host several Forest Service campgrounds including Arcadia and Riggs Flat, while BLM lands provide free dispersed camping options at places like Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area and along Tanque Road. Most established campgrounds accommodate both tent and RV camping, though mountain sites often have length restrictions due to narrow, winding roads.

Road conditions and seasonal closures significantly impact camping access in this region. As one camper noted, "The drive up [to Riggs Flat] starts out paved and well maintained, but halfway turns to a semi-maintained dirt road. You'll climb from 3,200 feet to 9,000 in a matter of miles." Mountain campgrounds like Clark Peak Corrals at 8,800 feet elevation provide relief from summer desert heat but are typically closed in winter. Many BLM dispersed sites require high-clearance vehicles, especially after rain. Cell service is spotty throughout the region, with Verizon generally providing the best coverage. Fire restrictions are common during dry periods, particularly in lower elevations.

Visitors consistently praise the dramatic temperature differences between desert and mountain sites. According to one review, "Within a 30-minute drive from the nearest town, you can leave 112-degree heat, cactus, and sand to find yourself surrounded by large pine, long mountain hikes and a 30-degree difference in temperature." Roper Lake State Park receives high ratings for its clean facilities, hiking trails, and family-friendly atmosphere. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound throughout the region, from desert quail and doves at Hot Well Dunes to deer and endangered red squirrels in the mountains. Birdwatchers particularly appreciate Cochise Lake near Willcox for its sandhill crane population during migration seasons.

    Bear Track Camp Picnic Site

    Mountain Hideaway

This camp is far up into the mountains. You will travel about 3 miles up a gravel bumpy road to get to this site. Definitely not for big rigs. I suppose a camper van could make it fine and the camp itself is big enough for one. There are also a few spots before Bear Camp and a few after if you keep driving but the road gets worse the farther you go. The spot is beautiful with pretty awe inspiring views. It is quiet even though it is right off the dirt road. There are fire rings and picnic tables. It was super windy when we were there so be sure to have a tent you can secure. There is a lot of ATV riding here and you can make it all the way down to the Frisco Camp and the San Francisco/Blue river. There is no cell coverage here. Be sure to pack it out as there is also no trash cans. I assume they call it Bear camp for a reason so don’t forget your bear spray!

    Coal Creek Campground

    Not too secluded

This campground is a little unclear the sign on the road before the campground just shows a picnic table but once you are into the spot it does have the 14 day limit sign. It is right on the road and the road isn’t too busy but the noise is there. The spot has a pit toilet, fire rings and barbecues. The site are not marked so not sure how many there are. There is no cell coverage here but the trees give plenty of shade to beat the desert heat! If you travel east just before the site there was a huge area where people were camping. It was much easier to access for big rigs but has no toilet, fire rings, tables or barbecues. These campers all had their side by sides out since the area has a lot of trails to access. The spot is cooler at night but perfect temperature during the day for family activities outside. Be sure to bring the bug spray!!

    Black Jack Campground

    Happy Little Trees!

So google tells you to drive with confidence if you venture up highway 78. You really can believe what you read on the internet! It is a very steep, narrow and windy road. However the fear will soon be replaced with amazement when you reach Black Jack at the top of the mountain. This camp ground is great. It is big rig friendly and right off the road. When you arrive there are 2 larger group spot right away. They have fire rings, barbecues and picnic tables. Then you can go left or right. Left will take you back to a treed area without tables, pits or barbecues. It not clear if you can camp here but it is part of the park. Most likely an overflow area. If you go right this is where you will find more camp sites with tables, fire rings and barbecues. There also 2 pit towels down this road. There are no visible numbers marking the spots. So we ended up taking a spot without a table, fire ring or barbecue. The spots are not level so bring your blocks or sleep on the at a slant. The trees offer shade at all the sites but there was a sign telling visitors that wind could blow them over and be aware. This place also has access to a trail. We walked it but it was wide enough for an ATV and recent tracks looked like someone rode on it. Looks like the trail goes about 4 miles. You can also go about 2 1/2 miles to Martinez road and that offers tons of riding as well. If you go past the last pit toilet there is at least one spot to camp and go a little farther you will have experience a view of the whole valley! Definitely recommend especially if you need respite from the desert heat! No cell coverage here!

    Mountain View RV

    Trains

Spent one night here. The park is very nice. Level spots and full hook ups $26. There is a food truck next to the store that offers burgers, hotdog and Mexican food for a reaso, nable price. Little store had lots of stuff, including many exotic kinds of jerkey Owners are super nice. The bad part it was only a couple hundred feet from the train tracks and there were several that went through in the middle of the night.

Tanque Road Dispersed Camping Near Safford

    Nice spot right off road

These spots offer about 5 spots for individual camps. They aren’t big so you have the area you pick to yourself. Each spot is fairly level and most are drive through. Y oh are right off the road but you really don’t hear much road noise. There is no light noise at night and we had an amazing view of the Milky Way! Lots of rocks if you are into rock hounding. If you go past the last site which is the biggest of them all you will come to a road on the left that also has a couple spots…..you can go even further and there is a road to the right with spots….after the road on the left the road is passable but is has a lot of dips, washouts that are very sandy, and washboarding. I would not recommend going past the last spots on the right with a pull trailer. The road gets pretty rough. I am sure a truck and trailer would be fine or even a van. The views of the mountains are pretty amazing anytime of the day. As you can see from the picture this road will take you to the hot springs park. Well worth a spot if you have time.

    Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area

    Great location

What a perfect place to stay and unwind after riding atvs. This site has some really great spots. There are two rows of tall trees about halfway down. They have lots of shade, fire pits and picnic tables. There is a lot of trails for riding dirt bikes and ATVS. The tubs are clean and flow as long as the sun is shining. At night they stop flowing which is a bummer when it’s too hot out to get in during the day. There are toilets close by and plenty of day use parking. I will definitely come back here if I am In the area and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.

    Tanque Road

    Ok but not much shade

This is the second spot on Tanque road. The first spot was taken so we decided to keep on traveling down the road. There is no other spots between the first spot and this one AND no where to really turn around. Right before is a pretty big wash and a steep hill slanted to one side. The spot is big enough for at least 4 campers with flat areas and fire rings. Kids would love all the rocks!! We used our side by side to travel over to the Hot Springs and I would not recommend for any big rigs to go farther that this spot. It is deep sand, lots of washed out road and very bumpy. The spot has spectacular views of all the mountains but no shade.
Someone must have took apart a building here because there is lots of wood for a fire. The night sky is amazing with no light pollution

    Black Jack Campground

    No frills relaxation

No hook ups, no water, just well spaced campsites with picnic tables, fire rings and grills. Very quiet and peaceful, although some road noise, but not distracting at all. Stayed 2 nights in a 20 ft. TT. Will definitely go back and stay longer! So relaxing!

Guide to Central

The Safford region in central Arizona sits at the base of the Pinaleño Mountains where elevations range dramatically from 3,200 feet in the valley to nearly 11,000 feet at Mount Graham's peak. This creates multiple climate zones within short distances, allowing campers to experience desert lowlands and alpine forests in a single trip. During summer months, temperature differences between lower and higher elevation campsites near Central, Arizona often exceed 30 degrees.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Roper Lake State Park provides accessible fishing with a small lake stocked with various species. "Site 46 is on the lake which hosts a variety of water fowl. The sites are large with plenty of screening for privacy," reports one camper who stayed at the Gila Campground section of the park.

Hot springs access: Natural hot springs attract visitors year-round. "Two night stay. Visited Mt Graham, picnicked and hiked. Enjoyed the hot springs hot tub in the campground. Clean, beautiful and friendly staff," notes a visitor to Roper Lake State Park, though some visitors report temporary closures: "Only down was bathroom had no hot water and springs were down. But still had a great time."

Mountain hiking: Forest trails provide relief from summer heat at higher elevations. "We didn't try fishing but there were a lot of people fishing from the pier. I don't think you can do much shoreline fishing just because of the grass/weeds," explains a visitor who instead enjoyed the walking trails around Hacienda Campground.

What campers like

Temperature variations: The dramatic climate change within short distances allows campers to escape extreme heat. At Arcadia Campground, visitors appreciate "the shaded campsites and quiet atmosphere. The campground is close to the road, but still feels deep in the forest."

Clean facilities: State park maintenance receives consistent praise. A visitor to Gila Campground noted, "The facilities are immaculately clean. I mean the cleanest campground restrooms I've ever seen. We stayed in a cabin and it was nice and quiet."

Family-friendly atmosphere: Designated swimming areas and accessible amenities make camping with children easier. "Very nice campgrounds, close to the lake. Plenty of space between campsites. Kids were able to ride bikes on the numerous paths around the campgrounds and lake," reports a family that stayed at Roper Lake.

What you should know

Road conditions vary dramatically: Access to mountain campsites requires careful vehicle consideration. A visitor to Riggs Flat Campground warns: "Road is super rough and narrow in spots going up Mt Graham. Drove up end of June 2020 and there were so many cars parked that you could not drive the camp ground loop to check out the sites."

Wildlife encounters: The area hosts diverse wildlife including skunks, deer, and birds. "There were a lot of skunks in the area and they will get into your things at night if you don't clean up," cautions a Riggs Flat camper, while another notes excellent bird watching opportunities.

Seasonal closures and maintenance: Facilities may close temporarily or seasonally. One recent visitor noted: "Sadly, there is construction going on in the park right now. It is windy and cold. The sites are pretty private and there are nice picnic table covers. Unfortunately, the dump station is closed for a while."

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: Swimming areas provide relief from heat. "Went 7-6-2020. Campsites are good size. Had power and water hook ups. Virtually no spots have shade. Lake is small. Has a little 'beach' area to swim. Water felt great," reports a visitor to Hacienda Campground.

Child-friendly activities: Bike paths and fishing opportunities keep children engaged. "This was a wonderful place to camp. The restrooms and shower areas were very clean and the park was quite and beautiful," notes a family that enjoyed the developed amenities.

Cabin alternatives: Round the Mountain Campground offers a compact camping experience when cabins are unavailable. "This tiny little campground is perched on the side of the road in another of AZ's Sky Islands. Just 3 campsites, not big enough for large RV's, though Hamlet-sized trailers and camper vans are fine."

Tips from RVers

Size restrictions: Mountain roads limit RV access. "RV's up to 22' and vehicles with trailers less than 21' are recommended. Longer vehicles have difficulty negotiating the switchbacks on the road up the mountain," confirms a camper who visited Arcadia Campground.

Dispersed options: For RVers seeking more space, Haekel Rd Dispersed Camping offers free sites with mountain views. "Wide open area, gravel road to access camping areas. No designated sites but plenty of flat open areas to stop. Hiked to some sort of dam in a dry gulch. Open skies great for star gazing," writes one RVer who found this area accommodating for larger vehicles.

Hookup availability: Full hookups available at some lower elevation sites. "Nice Spot. Easy to find, and easy to find a spot. Big Rig friendly in the 1st area. Gets a little tighter the further down you go like most places," reports a visitor to Haekel Rd camping, adding, "Free dump station at the Water Reclamation Plant in Safford, just sign in, dump, sign out."
