Best Campgrounds near Central, AZ

The Safford area of central Arizona encompasses diverse camping environments ranging from desert lowlands to high mountain forests. Roper Lake State Park, located just south of Safford, offers three developed campgrounds with full hookup sites, cabins, and tent camping areas around a small fishing lake. The surrounding Pinaleño Mountains host several Forest Service campgrounds including Arcadia and Riggs Flat, while BLM lands provide free dispersed camping options at places like Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area and along Tanque Road. Most established campgrounds accommodate both tent and RV camping, though mountain sites often have length restrictions due to narrow, winding roads.

Road conditions and seasonal closures significantly impact camping access in this region. As one camper noted, "The drive up [to Riggs Flat] starts out paved and well maintained, but halfway turns to a semi-maintained dirt road. You'll climb from 3,200 feet to 9,000 in a matter of miles." Mountain campgrounds like Clark Peak Corrals at 8,800 feet elevation provide relief from summer desert heat but are typically closed in winter. Many BLM dispersed sites require high-clearance vehicles, especially after rain. Cell service is spotty throughout the region, with Verizon generally providing the best coverage. Fire restrictions are common during dry periods, particularly in lower elevations.

Visitors consistently praise the dramatic temperature differences between desert and mountain sites. According to one review, "Within a 30-minute drive from the nearest town, you can leave 112-degree heat, cactus, and sand to find yourself surrounded by large pine, long mountain hikes and a 30-degree difference in temperature." Roper Lake State Park receives high ratings for its clean facilities, hiking trails, and family-friendly atmosphere. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound throughout the region, from desert quail and doves at Hot Well Dunes to deer and endangered red squirrels in the mountains. Birdwatchers particularly appreciate Cochise Lake near Willcox for its sandhill crane population during migration seasons.

    Arcadia Campground

    Peaceful Escape

We loved the shaded campsites and quiet atmosphere. The campground is close to the road, but still feels deep in the forest. The bathrooms were extremely clean and maintained. There is no water, though.

    Granville Campground

    Nice and quiet

Shady, quiet and a great place for birding. Well maintained pit toilets. We were the only campers there. The campground is close to the road, but there was hardly any traffic. It was perfect for our 19ft camper van.

    Willcox Lagoon Dispersed Site

It’s free and no one bothers me, it gets five stars

So great. Got there at roughly 6 o’clock, took a shower, made food, got to sleep. There are some trains off in the distance, but I use my earplugs. I’m a light sleeper, if you’re heavy sleeper, you’ll have no problem.

And once again, the app paid for itself by not having to have to stay and then motel with roaches, etc. It’s mid May and it felt like the temperatures dropped into the high 40s and hover there until about 6:30 AM. Once the sun takes over the mountain, the heat skyrocket and you’ll want to be getting packed up pretty quick.

Everything is super dry, so unless you’re confident with campfires, you might want to not do that there were some flyers, but no scorpions, no thanks. But I did see holes, so I’m sure snakes will be coming out when the weather gets warmer.

    Black Hills Rockhound

    Good area for camping

There are about 7 designated camp sites. It's wide open and no shade. We were there in March 2025. Small fire agates are all over the area but mostly chalcedony available.

    Apache Gold RV Park

Great spot for a night of casino fun with full hookups

Clean park, very busy, several full timers. A bit expensive but with the players club intro, worked to be free!. Thursday is veterans day ($20 credit)

    Owl Creek Campground

    Warning: Under Construction!

Stayed here in one of the three semi-completed campsites. Nice place to throw down off the beaten path. The entire grounds are a work in progress tho and the sites are littered with sharp objects like screws, nails, etc. So I had to setup shop outside the campsite a bit.

The construction crew has equipment all over the place. The team arrived early in the am and started all sorts of racket.

Beware: A resident construction camper is occupying one of three sites and he ran his super loud generator nonstop from 5pm onward. It was still going when I left around 7am. I didn’t sleep at all.

Cochise Lake Wildlife Viewing Area Dispersed

    Peaceful, easy big-rig stop

Super easy to get to off the interstate, wide smooth roads all the way here. Any size rig will fit as you just choose a spot on the road around the wildlife lake. Ours is 43' and we didn't need to unhook.

Cochise Lake Wildlife Viewing Area Dispersed

    Birds galore

Easy in. For the most part quiet. A good place to stay for a night, day or a few days. Here in early April. Missed the sandhill cranes. But I'll be back.

    Indian Bread Rocks

    Hot Hot Hot

Nice dispersed by unique rock formations. But in mid April it was 98 degrees. Nice in morning and amazing sunset. Lots of other campers. Pit toilets and tables at entrance. Not really a big rig place in my opinion.
