Cottonwood Campground — Roper Lake State Park

    Desert Terrain with Moutain View

There is plenty to do at Roper Lake. Great spots for RVs, tents, and cabins too. This is a popular area so get your reservations in early. The lake was low in December and it was windy and cold, but we made the best of it and enjoyed the views of snow capped Mt. Graham. Campground was clean and very dog friendly. They have a dog park. The have a junior ranger program... fun for the little ones! We did notice that many weren’t following covid protocol in bathrooms and around the campsite. But we had no problem social distancing and keeping to ourselves, even with our loop completely full. We felt safe and comfortable. Your stay also includes access to Dankworth Pond State Park, a 10 min drive down the road. The pond is small, but you’ll catch more fish here. There are also great educational hiking paths with information & replicas of tribal villages. Worth the drive!

    Alaskan RV Park

Take a trip down Music Road for a great stay!

Alaskan RV Park is conveniently located off of I-10 at Exit 366 near Bowie. The park features affordable RV sites at $20/night. The sites are all spacious pull-throughs. There is a dump station on site($10), and water refill available (based on tank size, but not more than $20). The park is handicap accessible and pet friendly. No breed restrictions. Tenting is also available. There are showers and laundry available. Alaskan RV Park is Bowie's best kept secret as it was the site of the Sideman Jamboree each year and featured music from country stars. The park hopes to bring music back to the stage in the future.

    Alaskan RV Park

    Sweet little park

We really liked this simple little RV park. Friendly and has character, even though it's like many other RV parks with the large gravel lot.   Nice backdrop of the mountains.  We liked the music vibe of the place, and that it is such a laid back and welcoming place.

Right off highway 10 so you get the road noise. Park has large gravel/dirt sites with hook ups.

Rate is $20/night with laundry, showers and bathrooms.

Pet friendly. Staff friendly as well.

    Alaskan RV Park

    One night

Thought about staying on BLM Land but temp was predicted for 28. Discovered this little gem for 20.00 with electric! Such a friendly group of people. I considered I-10 as my “white noise “ and did not bother me. Good Verizon signal and clean restroom. Pet Friendly. Quail crossing in the campground!

    Grande Vista RV Park

    It’s an option

Selected this RV park for the following reasons: Passport America discount, not along the railroad, I-10 or in the desert. It’s small and funky, weedy with, to our Bull terrier’s delight, many cats. They are dog-friendly and not too impressed with themselves like the more upscale and expensive RV parks are. $18 per night with full hookups. We’ve been boondocking out at Roosevelt lake for 2 weeks and this was convenient for laundry etc. Would stop here again for an overnighter with the 50% PA discount.

Who knew internet speeds would be the fastest I've ever seen

I have Verizon and management stated Verizon is the best in this small town and look at my screen shot, it's no joke. He said all other carriers suck.

This is on top of their 2 free wifi access they provide which are already fast! So if you need to get work done and reliant on good internet speeds, you've found the spot.

Place is a mix of mobile homes and RV park. Each site has their own picnic table and FHU. Water spigot is on the ground, not elevated. Laundry, showers, rec room (pool table, full kitchen, DVDs, books) and BBQ grill are included. Cats roaming everywhere. Fairly flat gravel parking. Management had to put me in a 50 amp site (#9) because their 30 amp sites were full at no extra charge. He even let me borrow the 50/30 amp converter as I didn't have one. Management lives in a mobile home near office and it was nice as he is available after regular hours.

Quiet place overall. If you come on trash day (Tuesday), you might get woken up by it if you're in our site as it's next to the alley.

As stated, very small town. We had dinner at Isabella's South Of The Border. Food wasn't as great as the reviews but decent for the area. Fun tip: Isabella is the wife of the owner of The Big Tex BBQ.

    Grande Vista RV Park

Awesome for RV Camping, Tent not so much

Everyone was super kind and sweet, restrooms/laundry center were very clean and well maintained. Tent camping spots are in front of the park, where the truck wash across the street can be heard prevalently. Cats everywhere are cute and sweet but I’m pretty sure they use the tent spots as their litter box.

    Upper Twilight Group Site

    Private and Clean

This site was very private and expansive for the location. There is the lower campsite however it is a bit down from the area where the tents were set up. There were multiple fire rings set up around the camp and the rangers who visited us informed that we may not use them and they were going to be dismantled once we left. There is a "main" fire ring near two tables and a bear box. The restroom being close and CLEAN was a bonus but is the only restroom for both the upper and lower campsites. There are great hikes and trails in the surrounding areas especially if you want to venture off trail to a lookout point nearby. Highly recommend this site for families and new to camping campers.

Lots of road noise. This campground is located right next to a highway and on an exit. There is constant road noise from the highway. If you are parked next to the highway you are approx 12 feet from the actual highway road itself and can feel and hear every single vehicle that drives by.

Guide to Central

Dispersed camping sites near Central, Arizona provide access to various elevations from 3,000 to over 9,000 feet within a short drive. The terrain transitions from desert landscapes to alpine forests with temperature differences of up to 30 degrees between locations. Most dispersed sites feature gravel surfaces with limited natural shade, requiring campers to bring appropriate shelter and supplies.

What to do

Hike diverse ecosystems: Arcadia Campground offers access to hiking trails through ponderosa pine forests. "There are some amazing views of the Pinaleños" notes one camper, while another mentions "a 10-mile round trip hike to Shannon Campground" for more adventurous hikers.

Fish at mountain lakes: The small fishing lake at Riggs Flat Campground provides opportunities for catching trout and bass. "The fishing is great for beginners and kids, not hard at all and the entire lake is easily accessible," reports Joshua L., making it ideal for families teaching children to fish.

Wildlife observation: The changing elevations create diverse habitats for wildlife viewing. "You'll climb through many different Biospheres and witness wildlife change from Lizards, Snakes, and desert dwellers to Deer, Endangered Red tree squirrels, and black bear," notes one visitor describing the drive up to camping areas.

What campers like

Mountain views: The vista from Haekel Rd Dispersed Camping includes "snow capped peaks of Mt. Graham" according to Erin H., providing dramatic backdrops especially at sunrise and sunset. Another camper notes it has "gorgeous views on the mountains" with "open skies great for star gazing."

Secluded spots for pets: Amigos Loop Dispersed Site offers isolation from other campers, with one visitor noting it's "far from other campers/camping sites" making it ideal for those camping with pets who need space to roam. The area provides "a great area to relax and enjoy the sunset."

Temperature relief: When desert temperatures rise, the mountain camping areas provide significant cooling. "You can leave 112 degree heat, cactus, and sand to find yourself surrounded by large pine, long mountain hikes & 30 degree difference in temperature," explains one camper about the mountain elevations.

What you should know

Road conditions vary significantly: Access to Marijilda requires preparation as "road is a couple miles, rough, and one shallow water crossing" with "4x4 needed to exit" according to Shane W. Similarly, access to Amigos Loop requires four-wheel drive to complete the loop.

Limited facilities at dispersed sites: Most dispersed camping areas have no facilities. "No toilets. No trash," notes one camper about Marijilda, while Haekel Road has "absolutely nothing at this site to create shade or a wind block," requiring self-sufficiency.

Fire restrictions: Due to the arid climate, fire restrictions are common, particularly during dry seasons. "Although fire restrictions are always a concern," notes one camper at Arcadia, highlighting the need to check current regulations before planning campfires.

Tips for camping with families

Choose established campgrounds for amenities: Gila Campground at Roper Lake State Park offers family-friendly facilities. "The facilities are immaculately clean. I mean the cleanest campground restrooms I've ever seen," reports Ryan R., making it more comfortable for families with children.

Wildlife awareness: Teach children about local wildlife precautions. "There were a lot of skunks in the area and they will get into your things at night if you don't clean up," warns Joshua L. about Riggs Flat, emphasizing proper food storage.

Plan water activities: Roper Lake provides swimming opportunities during hot weather. "Great Southern AZ swimming hole and hotspring" with "clean and peaceful location," notes Jessica P., offering recreation for children when temperatures rise.

Tips from RVers

Size restrictions on mountain roads: Mountain campgrounds often have vehicle length limitations. "RV's up to 22' and vehicles with trailers less than 21' are recommended. Longer vehicles have difficulty negotiating the switchbacks on the road up the mountain," warns an experienced camper about accessing higher elevation sites.

Level parking at dispersed sites: Tanque Road Dispersed Camping offers accessible sites for various RV sizes. "Plenty of sites, ours was 1.5 miles off 191. Easy to get to in our 26' bus," reports Robert E., while another camper notes "each spot is fairly level and most are drive through."

Services in Safford: RVers needing supplies can access services in nearby Safford. "Free dump station at the Water Reclamation Plant in Safford, just sign in, dump, sign out. They also have water to rinse, not potable," shares Erin H., providing valuable information for RV waste management.
