Utahraptor State Park, which officially opened in May 2025, contains one of the newer developed campgrounds in the Moab area, with three loops of designated sites in the Willow Springs area. The campground sits on red sand and rock terrain northwest of town, with open sightlines toward the surrounding sandstone formations. Sites are large, graveled, and level, and the newest facilities have drawn consistent praise from visitors. Martin-Charles S. describes the bathrooms as "spacious and very clean," and notes that covered picnic tables make a real difference in July heat.
Shade is scarce across most of the campground. That matters in summer, when temperatures climb and fans become a necessity for anyone sleeping in a van or tent. Sites closer to the road collect dust and noise from passing vehicles and UTVs, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings when the campground fills quickly. Campers who arrive midweek, or who drive roughly a mile in to the right-side sites, tend to find more space and less traffic noise, though the road gets progressively rougher the farther back you go. AWD or a lifted vehicle handles it more comfortably.
The location works well as a base for UtahRaptor State Park- Willow Springs Camping and for reaching Arches National Park, which is about ten minutes away. The KlonZo trail network sits at the end of the access road, giving mountain bikers direct access without driving. Moab's restaurants and resupply options are roughly fifteen minutes southeast, useful for those planning multi-day stays.
Cell coverage runs light. Verizon users report one to two bars of 4G LTE, enough for basic use but not reliable for streaming. Reservations are now available and recommended for weekend visits, since the campground fills by Friday night and latecomers end up in the noisier front sites. Primitive sites run $15 per night; developed hookup sites with electric, water, and sewer connections range from $30 to $50. Pets are allowed throughout.
This campground works best for campers who want established amenities and a convenient Moab base, and who are prepared for open, exposed sites and weekend crowds. Those prioritizing solitude will want to arrive early in the week or look at campgrounds near Utahraptor State Park for dispersed alternatives.
Description
In the 2021 legislative session, the Utah State Legislature passed HB 257, which created Utahraptor State Park, located roughly 15 miles northwest of Moab in Grand County.
NOTICE: Utahraptor State Park is currently in the planning phases for major construction and amenities improvements. All areas of this park remain in an extremely primitive state. Please check back with us at a later date for updates on our improvements
This new state park includes popular recreation spots such as the Dalton Wells and Willow Springs areas. Utah State Parks believes that — with proper planning and coordination with partners — we can better protect the area while maintaining its recreational value.
The area is currently undeveloped with only primitive recreation options. We ask visitors to remain patient during the planning process. Construction is expected to begin later this year.
While it is still in the planning process, future park visitors to the area can expect one modern campground, restrooms, office and entrance station, and trailheads for access to the nearby OHV and mountain bike trail systems.
Fee Info
Primitive camping only, while the park is under planning and construction. -A $15.00 Camping Fee, per vehicle, per night, will be required starting May 15, 2022.
Primitive camping will be allowed during construction of new state park facilities and amenities. Access to camping will be available on the Dalton Wells and Willow Springs roads. Camp only in disturbed sites which contain a fire pit (do not build additional fire pits). See below for additional Park Guidelines.
