Daisy Field Campground — Potawatomi State Park

    Costs keep rising

General: Located along Sturgeon Bay in the southern part of Door County, Potawatomi’s Daisy Field Campground is divided into two loops: north and south. In addition to paying the campsite fee, you need to pay a daily ($11) or annual ($38) for an out-of-state fee (slightly less for residents). The gate attendant tried to charge us for three days - we were camping for two nights but we convinced him this should not be the case. These additional fees are making private campgrounds much closer in cost and a bit more desirable. Note: you are near the Door County regional airport; we heard many planes in the early evening, but it quieted down later.

Site Quality/Facilities: 125 sites in two loops. Gravel pads except for the two handicap accessible sites in the south loop plus one handicap accessible cabin in the south loop. Be aware that in the south loop, many (but not all) of the even-numbered sites on the north side (10-46) slope upward and/or sideways while many of the odd-numbered sites (33-43) tend to slope downward. The sites on the south side of the loop appeared to be more level. Our site (40) was challenging for our camper van to find a level spot (it tended to slope sideways no matter what we did). Even-numbered sites in the north loop (86-102) appeared to be more level and they have a filtered bay view but they are right on the road. Each site has a fire ring and large picnic table; some are electric and some with no hook-ups. The sites are all wooded and there is reasonable separation between them. There is a nature center, camp store and sports rentals available between the two loops. Firewood is also available for $7 a bundle.

Bathhouse: There is only one bath/shower facility between the two loops which was not nearly adequate for 125 sites (this is not the first Wisconsin state park we’ve been in that has had only one bath house for the entire campground). It was reasonably clean, but it looked like their idea of cleaning was to blast it with a power hose as the floors, sinks, and toilets were extremely wet just after cleaning. The showers were ok, but you have to keep pressing the button every minute to keep the water flowing. There are several vault toilets – I saw two in the south loop and one in the north loop.

Activities/Amenities: Several hiking trails lead directly from the campground. We hiked the Ice Age Trail from the campground to the observation tower but were dismayed to discover it is permanently closed due to structural issues. There are sport rentals (bikes, kayaks, etc. available) which is a nice amenity.

Don’t get me wrong – we enjoyed our stay here but with state parks increasing their costs (especially for non-residents), it was only $7 less to stay here in a tent site than it did at the private campground we stayed at the previous night with more amenities and cleaner/more modern bathrooms.

    J.W. Wells State Park Campground

    Parking lot by the lake

Stayed for 5 nights. The third party computerized reservation system gave our site to someone else. Fortunately, we were put into a first-come first-served campsite right on the water which is a major upgrade. All of the sites (except for a few paved handicapped sites) are grass. Perimeter sites can be muddy. Interior sites can have enough slope that the trailer A-frame is on the ground in order to level. Electricity is reliable. Restrooms are immaculate. Showers are nice. Dump station with fresh water is clean and works well (2 bay).

My main complaint is a common, almost universal complain - people are right on top of one another. We have a truck camper 6 feet from our screen room with its AC on high and a very "fun" family sitting right outside our trailer on the other side. The "infield" is much worse - seems like each site has multiple vehicles and space is so tight that they are stacking kayaks. Family groups with clustered sites. Seems like a kennel as well with dogs everywhere. On the plus side: very little music being played, people were respectful, dogs well behaved for the most part without unattended barking dogs, people stayed quiet in off hours. The park itself is small with no biking trails or significant hiking trails. Not a lot of birdlife. They do have a nice beach which is a draw for families. We enjoyed our stay overall. We would return only if we had a waterfront site for a max of 3-4 nights. Off season would be better than summer.

    O. B. Fuller Campground

On the shores of Lake Michigan

You could drive by and miss this little gem. Beautifully kept up county park with clean shower house. Pet friendly, they even have a hitching post for your pet while visiting the bathrooms. On site hosts.

All sites are within a short walking distance of the beach and some are right on the beach. Site L1 had a good mix of beach and woods. Near the beach is a small playground for the kids.

    Lost Lake Cabins

Cabins only at this location but just down the road is a campground

The road in to the cabin campground is beautiful. Tall trees stand guard as you enter an even more peaceful area than the forest you were driving through.

There is a communal parking area with a few of the cabins in sight. You can reserve the cabins individually or get several for your family or group. You can see some recreation areas near the parking area.

The Lost Lake Campground is just down the road. This has a larger beach and boat launch. The lake is perfect for fishing. There are also several short trails and longer ones nearby.

Drive a bit further than Lost Lake Campground to Chipmunk Rapids Campground. There you will find a wonderful artesian well where you can fill up on great drinking water.

    Tranquil Timbers

    NOT PET FRIENDLY

Tranquil Timbers advertises pet friendly but they ARE NOT pet friendly. If your dog makes any kind of noise whatsoever, they are NOT welcome. Motorcycles and noisy kids however, park approved!

    Wagon Trail Campground

    Greaet family campground

General: Pride of ownership is evident throughout the campground and there are many different types of accommodations: tent, electric and water, (including some classified as prime), full hook-up, cabins, and yurts. There are also seasonal sites and travel trailer rentals. This campground was as busy as I would expect for Door County in the summer. We checked in at the well-staffed office (open until 9 pm) at which time our site was assigned.

Site Quality/Facilities: Since there are so many different kinds of sites, they vary greatly. Our non-hookup site (#104) had an L-shaped driveway which was just a bit awkward to back our campervan into but not impossible. This site would not have been suitable for a large RV. Some of the tent sites in this loop (#111-113) were called “hideaway” tent sites as they had very long driveways and more privacy. Many of the sites are wooded and there is varying separation between sites but more than adequate. The premium sites have the most privacy and many of these have no one behind them.

Bathhouse: There are two bathhouses, and each is closed for a two-hour period each day. They were immaculate (possibly the cleanest campground bathrooms I have ever seen!). The shower, while a bit on the small side, had nice hot water and plenty of hooks to hang clothes and toiletries. They were clean.

Activities/Amenities: The campground itself has much to offer: playground, recreation area with volleyball net, laundry, dishwashing station, fish cleaning station, recreation room with pool table and arcade games, lounge with fireplace, couches, and books, a camp store, and doggie stations. A couple of hiking trails lead from the campground, including one to Grandma’s Swedish Bakery (highly recommend at least one visit). Nearby kayak and SUP rentals. There is much to do in Door County for active and less active pursuits; this campground is located on the quiet side of the peninsula, but it does not take long to drive to other activities.

This is not our typical type of campground. We used to live within two hours of the northern part of the Door Peninsula, so we only took day trips here; camping here is new to us but we are enjoying exploring many different options.

    Wagon Trail Campground

    Night Sky Lovers Dream

This was probably one of my favorite spots to camp so far, and we do a lot of family camping!! Quiet, serene, close to the lake. The night sky viewing was AMAZING here. Because of its location, there is very little light pollution which makes for wonderful star gazing. We stayed in a camping cabin this trip as that was the only spot available. A short hike from the campground takes you straight to a great beach on Lake Michigan. I will say that the mosquitos are fierce, so make sure that you bring your bug spray! Also a short drive to some great Door County spots. We love Door County and look forward to camping here again!

    Wagon Trail Campground

    Best Campground Ever

This is probably the nicest, most well run campground we have ever stayed at. The staff is friendly and welcoming, they are pet friendly, and their sites are spacious and private - unlike so many other campgrounds we visit.

While staying here, you’re a short walk to a great bakery and restaurant. Additionally, you can bring your gear and hike the trails just 5 minutes away at the state park.

Rates are very reasonable and the bathrooms are the best we’ve seen at any campground.

This place can’t get much better...

Guide to Wausaukee

Cabin rentals near Wausaukee, Wisconsin provide access to the Peshtigo River watershed in northeastern Wisconsin, where elevations range from 600-800 feet above sea level. The region experiences warm summers with temperatures typically in the 70s and cold winters with frequent snow. Most rental cabins in this area operate seasonally from May through October with fall being particularly busy due to vibrant leaf color changes typically peaking in early October.

What to do

River activities: At Peshtigo River Campground, tubing excursions cost $14 per person with cooler floats available for $8. "They rent tubes for $14/person. Cooler floats are $8. This includes the bus service to the drop off anytime between 10 and 3pm. I would dedicate 3-4 hours to the tube trip," notes one visitor.

Hiking trails: Chute Pond Park offers multiple hiking paths suitable for all skill levels. "They have a little footbridge to fish off of, a playground, and a nice beach. You can rent out kayaks and little boats. There's lots of hiking trails. One trail leads to a scenic overlook and another leads to slippery rock," a regular visitor explains.

Swimming spots: The natural water features at Fischer Chute Pond Memorial Park include unique swimming opportunities. "Slippery Rock is a waterfall from the river that you can actually slide down. They also have a rock you can jump off as well into water," mentions a reviewer who has visited the park for over 10 years.

What campers like

Private wooded sites: Wagon Trail Campground offers secluded spots with natural buffers between campsites. "The campsites are large and secluded. When going to visit different towns it is located in a great location to easily get around. The restrooms were comparable to Fort Wilderness," according to a pleased camper.

Exceptionally clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness stands out as a top feature at several campgrounds. "Bathrooms are always amazingly clean. Small camp store has all the basics. Playground for kids. Campsite was very clean," reports a visitor who stayed at Wagon Trail Campground.

Lake and beach access: Diamond Lake Family Campground provides water recreation options particularly appreciated by families. "We don't have small kids but 2 of the couples we were with did and they had so much fun with the water chute and inflatables. The campground was quiet and everyone was friendly," shares a summer visitor.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most cabin rental facilities in the Wausaukee area close during winter months. "We stayed for 2 nights (Fri and Sat) in Aug and really enjoyed it," notes a Diamond Lake visitor, highlighting the peak summer season.

Advance reservations: Popular weekends fill quickly, especially during summer and fall color season. "My friends and I love camping here because of the huge wooded sites, quiet family environment, and excellent service provided by Jen, Joe and their whole family," mentions a regular at Diamond Lake Family Campground.

Site variety: Goodman Park provides options ranging from basic tent sites to cabins with diverse privacy levels. "Clean quiet campground. Private sites and spacious grounds," reports a satisfied visitor, noting the well-maintained nature of the facilities.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Parks with playgrounds and beach areas offer built-in entertainment. "It is a quiet campground and everyone is very friendly there. Great playground for the kids the only problem is it is far away from really anything and the gas station near by charges an arm and a leg for food," explains a visitor to J.W. Wells State Park Campground.

Safety considerations: Some campgrounds prioritize family safety with clear rules. "Family-owners take pride in owning a quiet campground and doesn't allow outsiders. They have clear rules, and as long as they are followed, you're solid," notes a Diamond Lake Family Campground visitor.

Cabin availability: Badger Park Campground in Peshtigo offers cabin options close to town amenities. "If you want to camp without being far from amenities, you can't do much better than Badger Park. I loved coming here as a kid just for the playground which is still the best in the area," shares a local resident.

Tips from RVers

Site specifications: Many camping cabins near Wausaukee have nearby RV sites with full hookups. "We thought we had a small site- until we got there. Site 86 is the smallest on the map but it is not small at all! We have a 33 1/2 ft 5th wheel and had plenty of space," mentions a visitor to Peshtigo River Campground.

Utility access: Heavens Up North Campground provides full hookup options for those wanting more amenities. "Nice and shady. Sights have space. Pool, showers, dump station, mini golf and other activities. Camp fire wood was nice and dry at a good price. Vary hilly," notes one RVer about the terrain and services.
