The Nicolet National Forest region surrounding Wabeno, Wisconsin offers RV campsites at elevations between 1,500-1,800 feet across varied terrain. Winter temperatures often drop below 0°F, while summer brings comfortable 70-80°F days with frequent evening thunderstorms. Several forest service and private campgrounds provide accommodations ranging from primitive sites to facilities with electric hookups.
What to do
Water activities on Boulder Lake: Boulder Lake provides shallow, sandy shorelines ideal for swimming and launching watercraft. "Big, beautiful Lake. Friendly campground hosts. Nearby towns. Nearby firewood. One of my favorite places to camp," reports a visitor to Boulder Lake.
Whitewater rafting trips: The nearby Wolf River offers rapids for various skill levels. "Boulder lake is amazing and is located conveniently close to the Wolf river, which has whitewater rafting and trout fishing. The lake is not very deep, which is great for swimming or water recreation," notes a Boulder Lake camper.
ATV trail riding: The region features extensive ATV trail networks on forest roads. "This campground is out there. With sites right next to the lake, you're sure to enjoy some of Wisconsin's beautiful north woods," says a visitor to Morgan Lake Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Multiple lakes offer bass, walleye and northern pike fishing. "We did catch one bass off the shore. The shore is shallow and mostly sand. Nice for swimming," reports a Boulder Lake visitor.
What campers like
Lakefront sites: Direct water access from campsites provides convenience for water activities. "We had site 18 which is right on the water and across from the shower house. It was decently spaced out from the other sites. The shore was pretty level and easy to get our kayaks in and out," shares a Boulder Lake camper.
Peaceful atmosphere: Most campgrounds offer quiet surroundings during weekdays. "If you want a quiet, secluded campground where you can just sit back and enjoy being out in the woods(we had deer walk through the back of our campsite at night), then you will enjoy this campground," says a visitor to Moen Lake Campground.
Clean facilities: Campground hosts maintain bathrooms and shower facilities regularly. "The showers, Bathrooms and Vault Toilets were all clean. We did enjoy the hiking on the campground but there were some parts that were a little overgrown," notes a Boulder Lake visitor.
Friendly staff: Campground hosts provide helpful information about local attractions. "The owners Raf & Amy work very hard to make sure their guests are comfortable and the way they manage the campground is top notch," reports a visitor to River Forest Campground.
What you should know
Site selection considerations: Some lakefront sites offer better access than others. "Be aware the sites to the east are higher elevation and looked like it was steep to get down to the water," warns a Boulder Lake visitor.
Limited cell service: Connectivity varies throughout the region, particularly at more remote campgrounds. "This campground is out there. With sites right next to the lake, you're sure to enjoy some of Wisconsin's beautiful north woods," notes a Morgan Lake Campground visitor.
Noise factors: Waterfront sites may experience more traffic noise. "The waterfront sites are on the main road, so you do hear all the RVs coming and going," reports a Boulder Lake camper.
Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate from May through October. "We went rafting on the Wolf River and decided to camp at Boulder Lake. It was Memorial Day weekend and rainy, so there wasn't a lot of people camping," shares another Boulder Lake visitor.
Tips for camping with families
Beach access: Look for campgrounds with dedicated swimming areas. "The lake is super clean, the sites are very nice, and it's nice and secluded. Enjoy the drive in!" recommends a visitor to Boulder Lake.
Activity options: Some campgrounds provide organized recreation. "The kids got to sing karaoke and go tubing among many other activities," shares a visitor to River Forest Campground And Outdoor Retreats.
Amenities for children: Consider campgrounds with playgrounds or game areas. "Showers pool mini-golf. No lake river or fishing," notes a visitor to Maple Heights Campground.
Site spacing: Family groups may prefer more secluded sites. "This campground is huge, it is a lot of permanent RV park sites but there's a significant amount of sites available. Seems peaceful but busy. Sites are pretty close together so if you looking for quiet privacy I would look elsewhere," advises a visitor to Lake Hilbert Campground.
Tips from RVers
Backing considerations: Some sites present challenges for larger rigs. "We arrived with a 34' 5th wheel camper, backing into the spot was tricky but very doable," shares a River Forest Campground visitor.
Electric service variations: Amperage differs between campgrounds. "The site has water and 20 amp electric service, the power is substantial to power the necessities," notes another River Forest visitor.
Hookup orientation: Some sites have hookups positioned for specific RV types. "Very nice campsites. With great owners. It probably is the newest campground in the state. All the RV pads have concrete in their leveled. Every campsite has a fire pit," reports a visitor to Holly Wood Hill Campground.
Leveling ease: Site terrain varies significantly between campgrounds. "We stayed in site 18, non electrical but right across from the bath house which was always clean! And the views and the level sites, didn't even need the levelers! Very cool campground!" shares a Boulder Lake camper.
