Best Campgrounds near Rice Lake, WI

General: Smallish (38 sites plus four walk-in sites) Army Corps of Engineers campground. Some (see below) have electric hookups but no water or sewer hookups, however, there is a dump station. 

Site Quality: All sites are gravel/dirt (except for the ADA-accessible site), and most are very generous in size. Our site (7) sloped down but leveled out with plenty of room for our campervan at the bottom. All sites are wooded with trees providing separation/privacy between sites. Completing the site are a metal picnic table, fire ring, and lantern hook. 

Bath/Shower House: Sites 28-38 only have vault toilets (but you could trek to the other campground loop). Sites 1—27 have flush toilets and showers. They were very clean, and I especially appreciated the fact that they were cleaned daily before 6 am, a shout out to the camp host! The shower was great– warm water and great flow, although our friends (who arrived two days before we did) had cold showers when the campground was full.

Activities: Several short hiking trails. I give this campground 4 stars instead of 5 because Eau Galle Reservoir (Lake George) is about a 10-minute drive from the campground. Most Corps of Engineers campgrounds are located right on the water. There are no amenities (rentals, etc.) offered at the lake but it is small and beautiful, and we enjoyed a peaceful paddle. We saw a couple of people fishing on the lake and there is a small swimming area. At the campground, there was an interpretive center, but it was locked when we were there. There is also a nice, modern playground. 

Aside from the plentiful bugs (in August), we enjoyed our two-night stay at this campground!

This is a smaller Corps of Engineers park, lots of primitive sites and lots electric sites too. A smaller lake but no gas motors. Cell service with Verizon was ok.

I am writing to you in regards to our recent stay at Big Rock Creek on the weekend of October 4-6 at the Lakeview Family Tent. I am not normally one to write reviews or give feedback, but we were very disappointed with our stay at Big Rock. We spent over$700 for lackluster amenities and customer service. I want to say that your grounds are beautiful and a great idea for a family stay. However, your website is quite deceiving. There was no mention on the website or anywhere in the booking paperwork that the bathroom facilities provided were a porta potty. Paying the amount of money we did- we expected a more permanent, clean bathroom facility with running water. It wasn’t until we arrived that we were informed that it would be a porta potty we would be using all weekend. We made the trek up to the barn to use the bathroom there and to be able to wash out hands only to find the floor to be covered in mud and no paper towels or toilet paper. As far as the firewood, again if we are paying over$700 for a weekend the firewood should be included in the cost of the tent rental. Having to pay extra for pretty much everything on your grounds(including firewood) was ridiculous and we decided to just forgo any extra activities due to the expensive price. We went for a relaxing family weekend, getting to see the Christmas lights everywhere at night was nice- however it was loud and intrusive during the day. The entire evening on Friday and the entire day on Saturday there was a crew of men working right outside our ten with a lift hanging lights. We were parked on the side of the tent and they were right next to our car. Listening to the lift going up and down all day along with the ATVs driving back and forth in front of the tent causing dust to fly up each time was not exactly relaxing. We felt this was quite rude honestly. I am not sure why this work needed to be done during the weekend when you had guests using the tent. We ended up leaving for the last part of the day because of the noise right next to the tent and the constant traffic of workers coming and going. I understand a cleaning charge as you have to wash linens, etc. But to be quite honest, the tent was not exactly clean when we arrived. There were stains all over the couch, leaves and pine needles all over the flooring inside the tent, it appeared it hadn’t been swept or cleaned. The coffee maker had built up grime and grounds left in it. There were no garbage bags to use in the bins. It wasn’t exactly clean and presentable. Overall, our stay was quite disappointing. Up at the Barn, there really wasn’t much to see or do, using a porta potty all weekend was disgusting, and the crew right next to the tent all weekend was noisy and intrusive. This short weekend stay was not worth the money we spent. We really looked forward to our stay there and it was nothing as portrayed on your website.

Nice campground

Our RV GPS wanted to take us through Hayward city central to the campground (CG), which was fine. However, as this was our fourth time staying at Lake Chippewa Campground, we stayed on Hwy 77 past the Walmart to hook up on Hwy 63 at the casino to avoid traffic and stoplights in Hayward. We arrived with no issues and during check-in we were delighted to find out we had other site options than the pull throughs for our 12 night stay. We had changed our reservations to an earlier date, and the only open sites at the time were pull throughs, which are not bad. However, there are much better sites in this CG. We were provided a map of available sites and a golf cart to check out sites. As we know this CG well, it was a no brainer for us to chose back-in site 460 with FHUs. The regulars who normally stay in this site had gotten an opening in one of the CG's permanent site areas. We happily proceeded to our site and had no problems backing in. The hook ups are in the middle of this long pad. Water pressure was good at about 50 psi. We did not opt for their Wifi, which you have pay for and later found out it doesn't work in this area anyway. We got 1 bar on Verizon and the signal was basically useless. There are a lot of mature trees in this CG and in this site in particular. We put our Starlink on the roof and we were able to get a usable signal. We would rather have a nice site with privacy than wifi or a phone signal. This site sits well off the road and has a large back yard area. Lake Chip is a large private CG but has a state park feel. They have lots of amenities such site side trash pickup, laundry, boat/kayak rentals, golf cart rentals, propane, and the list goes on. Eat at Powell’s on Round Lake about 15 minutes away on Co Hwy C towards Hayward. Good food and service.

Step out of your RV in the a.m. and smell the pines! Large pull through sites.Wooded, concrete patio, picnic table, fire pit. Very quiet. Large outdoor pool and all sorts of things to do! Across the road is the Resort with a great restaurant and bar. You can also use peddle boats, kayaks, canoes, etc for FREE!!. Or rent a boat or pontoon, which we did. It was a wonderful 4 days and we reserved again for next year.

Nice little campground with dump station and water. Most sites are electric although some of the power posts are not conveniently located. There is noise from Hwy 70 also but the sites are paved and only $20 a night.

Creek,lake,showers,laundry,full hookups,camp store,arcade,kids play areas,beach and more. Pricey! Plan on 60$/day

Lots of RV campers, but none were obnoxious. T-mobile service is almost non-existent depending on location. The showers and bathrooms were spotless. Firewood is available at several roadside stands just outside the entrance.

Well used county park on a nice clear lake. The sites are close together with little privacy and close to the road which is noisy during the morning and evening but quiets down at night. Lots of kids! Nice to see families camping and having fun! Swimming, fishing, riding bikes, playground. Clean bathrooms (at least the women’s). Not our cup of tea but fine for a one night stopover. Loons calling at night and in the morning!

Really enjoyed the experience! It’s beautiful and good mix of quiet and lots of activity’s. Can tube down the creek, very shallow so even littles can do it too. Site 133 was super small, so much so I thought he was kidding. Saw site 204 was open and switched to that one instead. Dogs welcome which was super nice!

I've recently gotten into camping. I love it, and love KOAs, I've camped at a few and they're great. My grandson enjoyed the waterslide.

In June 2024 we had a one day primitive spot on sperry lane you can drive over a tight steel bridge “crossing a small creek. There’s only 3 sites here but are spacious and separated from the rest of the campground but still having walking distance to exceptional bathroom and showers which you can enter into a bar for a cocktail. We enjoyed our spot #3 but bring mosquito spray there were terrible but we had a screened tent which helped. Will definitely return again.

I’ve never had any experience here. But ☝🏼 it does look like a beautiful place to test for our anniversary this Fourth of July!!!

Through a short weekend trip the camp site was a great size for us. Everyone was nice and friendly especially camp staff. The kayaking/ canoeing was an amazing adventure that everyone should try. It was even great for kids 3 and 6.

Camped at site #34 on Oct 24, 2023. Camping is permitted from May 1-November 30. Electricity and all water systems, including shower buildings and flush toilets, were still turned on during our visit, even though the campground begins winterizing in mid-October. This county campground and its facilities are very well maintained & clean. We were able to reserve and pay online for our a site on the evening of our arrival. Did not come across a campground host. This is a large, wooded campground, and we were the only campers here. Our site had a nice view of Cranberry Lake; there was a deck behind our site. Our site was large with a dirt surface with electricity; not level, but doable in our van. Had a peaceful night. Two tables and a metal fire ring were at our site. I bet this campground is busy during the summer. I would camp here again. Pretty cool place!

Highly recommend this campground! Affordable, all the hook ups, and lake access! Plan to go again this year

As we arrived on a Saturday around 1:45 PM, there was quite the line of RVs checking in as most people come in for a week on Saturdays. As we have been here multiple times, we knew not to line up down the narrow road shoot that’s adjacent to the lodge where you check in but stay on the main road. They had plenty of staff on duty, so check-in was fairly quick, and we headed to site 457, which was an easy back-in with FHUs. We were pleasantly surprised we didn’t get site 456 right on the road. When we make a reservation for this campground(CG), you can only pick an area, not a specific site, for most of the sites. This was the first time we’d stayed in this area of mixed short-term and seasonal sites. The FHU facilities were placed in the middle of the gravel-grass site with a picnic table and fire pit. We were able to put out our back patio and have plenty of space to park our F450. There are a lot of mature trees in this park, so satellite is going to be iffy depending on the site. We were able to get an okay shot to the north for Starlink but no chance for the southern sky. You can opt to pay for the park Wi-Fi. The water pressure is good, and we had two bars on Verizon. The staff at the lodge/office is top-notch. We found out that this year’s“watch out” was kids riding electric bikes full out versus underage golf cart drivers of last year, so“watch out” in either case. The CG has been trying to police the lack of parental oversight, but this first-rate CG attacks a lot of families. Though there’s no formal dog park, there are plenty of areas to walk your dog, including the trail up and around the newer primitive camping area. Lake Chip is one of our favs, and we will continue to return.
