The Roslyn area of Washington sits at approximately 2,200 feet elevation in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Campgrounds near Roslyn experience distinct seasonal changes with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters that typically close many sites from mid-October through May. Water levels in Lake Cle Elum and Kachess Lake fluctuate dramatically throughout the camping season, often exposing extensive lakebeds by late summer.
What to do
Hiking access for all levels: Teanaway Campground serves as an excellent base for hiking enthusiasts. "About a 20 minute drive from Clu Elum. Free with a Discovery Pass but no one checked while I was there. Plenty of spots even late on a Friday," reports Katy W. The campground connects to a network of trails suitable for both casual walkers and serious hikers.
River activities: Salmon La Sac offers excellent water access with two rivers meeting at the campground. "Old growth forests abound, camp sites were spacious and private. Fishing is available from two rivers the Cooper and the Cle-Elum both within walking distance from the site," notes Donald C. The streams provide good fishing opportunities for trout when water levels and temperatures are favorable.
Mountain biking trails: Teanaway Campground features direct access to mountain biking routes. "Lots of people. Was quiet at night during our stay. River access for the kids. If you are a mountain biker, this spot will not disappoint with the trail system right out of camp," shares Silas. The trails range from beginner to advanced difficulty with most suitable for intermediate riders.
What campers like
Well-spaced campsites: Kachess Campground receives consistent praise for site layout and privacy. "The camp sides had good space separating them. oh and the bathrooms didn't smell. I loved staying here," says Tori W. Sites are arranged to maximize privacy while still allowing access to amenities.
River sounds for sleeping: Campers consistently mention the soothing background noise at riverside sites. "It's gorgeous at Kachess, and smells like heaven. Check it out sometime," reports Pete B. The white noise from flowing water helps mask other campground sounds and contributes to better sleep quality.
Natural swimming areas: Wish Poosh Campground provides lake access without developed facilities. "The lake is walking distance and provides plenty of space for everyone to splish and splash around although the water is quite cold but wonderful," notes Kimmy G. Swimming areas vary with water levels but typically feature gradual entry points suitable for wading.
What you should know
Seasonal challenges: Late summer camping at Kachess Lake Lakebed comes with specific considerations. "Great boondocking. We made it fine in our 26ft class c, but the big sharp-edged rocks were concerning to drive over... But the lake level was really low when we stayed there, so there was plenty of available space for camping," explains Laura M.
Wildlife awareness: Black bears are active throughout the Roslyn area camping zones. "On our first night, a bear passed by one of our neighbor's site so make sure you clean up after yourselves and don't leave food out at night," warns Kimmy G. about Wish Poosh Campground. Bear-proof food storage is essential at all sites.
