Peaceful Pines RV Park & Campground

      Week Stay

I’ve never been so harassed before by a campground for having a pet. Definitely not pet friendly. There is literally one tree they make you stay at and you can’t walk the campground with your dog.

      Ruby’s Resort & RV @ Silver Lake

      Not for me

The location is beautiful. However, the sites are quite small, there is no designated pet area, and showers are .25 a minute.

      Cow Lake

Welcome to the Wild West - Beautiful but Busy

At first glance, Cow Lake is a beautiful and secluded oasis tucked away in the scablands of Eastern Washington.

However, the area is a very popular local fishing and recreation spot and gets crowded on the weekends.

Cow Lake is about 10 miles east of Ritzville and is a free, dispersed camping area.

The road here is dirt and the last mile or so is pretty rough. But, most vehicles shouldn’t have any problems.

There are no services, facilities or potable water but cell service was good.

We arrived early Friday afternoon and there were just 2 other vehicles here. But, by evening there were over a dozen boisterous people fishing along the shore. Sound travels well over water and it was very noisy.

Luckily, the people fishing left and we basically had the area to ourselves until Saturday morning when family groups arrived for a day of fishing and fun.

By far the worst of it was the yahoos who came in later that evening to drink and shoot their guns. It was like we were camping in the middle of a shooting range.

We would not camp here again. Too crowded, too noisy & too many guns.

      Tucannon River RV Park

      Peaceful

Beautifully maintained campground with friendly camp hosts. Affordable, large pull through sites. Large shade trees in several sites. Some of the most level sites we’ve stayed in. Community fire pit or bring your own to have in your site. Nice bathrooms with showers ($1 in quarters for 7 minutes). Plenty of grass area for kids to play in. Pets welcome. Close to Tucannon and Snake Rivers. Open year round.

      Hog Lake Campground

Good quiet place for a pass through

We have stayed here twice while driving through the area. It’s quiet and really close to the highway. There are 10-12 spots along the gravel road to Hog Lake. We have a 21ft trailer towed behind a pickup truck and it’s able to fit in most spots. None of these are really official spots (not flattened or bordered) but it’s a nice place to pass through. There are train tracks that parallel the highway, so the further you go down the gravel road, the further you’ll be from the train noise. Even if you’re closer to the entrance, it’s not too bad.

    Guide to Ritzville

Ritzville sits in the heart of eastern Washington's Columbia Plateau, where dry scablands and agricultural terrain create distinct camping landscapes. Temperatures here vary dramatically with summer highs often exceeding 90°F and winter lows below freezing. While Interstate 90 provides easy access to camping areas, many dispersed sites require gravel road navigation that becomes especially challenging during spring runoff or after heavy rain.

    What to do

Stargazing opportunities: Escure Ranch Recreation Area offers exceptional night sky viewing conditions away from urban light pollution. "This is a lovely secluded spot for amazing star-gazing on a clear night. At night it is in complete darkness, away from traffic noise, and you can hear the coyotes as they move nearer," reports one camper about this Escure Ranch experience.

Hiking in channeled scablands: Spring brings vibrant wildflowers to the unique geological formations. "A three mile hike/horseback ride takes you through Washington's Channeled Scablands to Towell Falls through spectacular buttes and meadows along the creek. The best time to visit is in the spring when the wildflowers are in bloom and before the RATTLESNAKES get populous," advises a visitor.

Wildlife observation: The area supports diverse bird populations and nocturnal mammals. At Coffeepot Lake, campers report "extremely active wildlife. dozens of kinds of birds and bats. neat big bugs. we woke up to a flock of pelicans. at night, coyotes howling in ALL directions and raccoons rustling all around by the water."

    What campers like

Easy highway access: Many campgrounds provide convenient overnight stops. "The location is a long haul on a dirt road to the campground. Rig was covered in dust by arrival," notes one camper at Four Seasons Campground & Resort, highlighting the importance of location planning.

Spacious camping areas: Fishtrap Recreation Area provides ample room for pets and families. "We enjoyed our stay here. We experience wild turkeys, a variety of birds, the sound of coyotes not far, field squirrels and snakes. Quite a few spots you can pull into," shares a visitor.

Lakeside amenities: Several campgrounds offer water access and shade. "Nice quiet spot on the lake and pet friendly," notes a camper at Sprague Lake Resort, while another mentions "Loved the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Cool breeze off the water and a very happy dog."

    What you should know

Wildlife considerations: Prepare for various animal encounters in this region. At Hog Lake Campground, one visitor cautions: "Kind of littered with trash just about everywhere. Broken glass in some sites so be careful. Also there's kind of a weird vibe? As a solo female camper I've been walking around and making sure to have my mace on hand."

Train noise: Railroad tracks near some campgrounds create significant noise disruption. "Right next to a very busy railroad and there is no railroad crossing and the trains blare the horn at least 6xs while passing… 2 to 3 times an hour on the hour," warns a Four Seasons camper.

Limited shade options: Many sites lack natural shade cover during hot summer months. "It is very flat and would be reasonably accessible for someone using a wheelchair or with other mobility restrictions. There's no shade other than under a nice picnic table shelter, so it was best for us to come late in the day and then make breakfast under that shelter."

    Tips for camping with families

Look for designated swimming areas: Not all lakes are suitable for swimming. "The lake was beautiful and not too big or small. Mosquitos were not worse than expected as the wind helped a bit," shares a visitor about Four Seasons Campground, while another notes "The lake is a standing lake so swimming isn't ideal. Boat launch is a better option than walking into the lake."

Pack insect protection: Mosquitoes can be prevalent, especially near water. "We had to stop last minute because another campground fell threw. Since we were only staying for 14 hours, they put us in the day use area which was nice but there were soooooo many mosquitos. I guess that's what we get for staying on a lake."

Consider tent placement carefully: The terrain presents challenges for tent camping. At Fishtrap Recreation Area, a camper advises "I will advise tent campers it is tent accessible but not the easiest spot in a tent. The soil is very dry and a couple of the spots were hard rocks and not accessible for tents. Would recommend a backup plan ahead of time."

    Tips from RVers

Check road conditions: Many access roads require vehicles with decent clearance. At Twin Lakes, a visitor warns "The road that leads down to the lake/camping area is steep and winding. I would not suggest anything over 25 foot length try to go down because you may not get back up. If you're pulling a car or trailer you'll want to be mindful."

Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven camping surfaces. "We have a 21ft trailer towed behind a pickup truck and it's able to fit in most spots. None of these are really official spots (not flattened or bordered) but it's a nice place to pass through," notes a Hog Lake visitor.

Plan for varying hookup availability: Research utility access beforehand. "A good spot to stay a night or more. Currently NO FIRES due to high risk of forest fires. Several spots to boondock. There is a dumpster and port a poty," shares a camper at Fishtrap Recreation Area, highlighting the need to be self-sufficient for pet friendly camping near Ritzville.
