    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Milton, Washington is situated among several established campgrounds offering a mix of tent and RV accommodations. Dash Point State Park, located near Federal Way, provides year-round camping with hiking trails and beach access. Game Farm Wilderness Campground in nearby Auburn features 18 campsites with water and electric hookups. Both public and private options exist within a 30-mile radius, including Kanaskat-Palmer State Park which accommodates tents, RVs, and cabin rentals. Most facilities provide picnic tables, fire pits, and access to drinking water, with varying levels of hookups for recreational vehicles.

Campground availability remains consistent year-round at several locations, though peak visitation occurs from May through September. Many campgrounds require reservations, which can be secured through Washington State Parks or private operators. Facilities like Saltwater State Park Campground operate seasonally from May to September while others such as Dash Point and Penrose Point remain open throughout the year. Most campgrounds feature designated camping pads, restrooms, and picnic facilities. "The spots we saw felt more isolated from each other than other campsites we've been to. Great if your group plans to stay up late without worrying about bothering other guests," noted one visitor to Dash Point.

Campers consistently highlight the spaciousness and privacy of sites throughout the Milton area. Several campgrounds provide waterfront views, with Penrose Point and Dash Point offering boat-in access and waterfront hiking trails. Visitors appreciate the proximity to urban amenities while maintaining a natural setting. Bathroom facilities receive mixed reviews, with some users noting maintenance issues. As one camper observed at Dash Point, "Cleanliness, peace and quiet, and ease of access are all strengths." Families appreciate the day-use areas adjacent to camping facilities, which often include swimming areas and playgrounds. RV campers benefit from the numerous options with hookups, though some locations have restrictions on generator use and vehicle size.

      Belfair State Park Campground

Beautiful, easy to get to campground

This is a beautiful state park with plenty of bathrooms, showers, and water points. There are plenty of full hookup RV spots, non-hookup TV spots, and tenet camping sites. There is a playground for kids, easy access beach area for swimming and paddle boarding, and pathways for pleasant walks.

I stayed on the beach loop at site 142. It was sunny during the day with nice shade in the evening. A blackberry patch right behind me was just beginning to ripen.

Great place for families with a loop for the kids to cruise on their bikes.

      Thousand Trails Thunderbird

      Summer Vibes

Love this park! The staff is wonderful and the pools are great. Yes, I said pools. Lol. Thunderbird has 3 pools for all age groups (one especially designed for little toddlers) and a hot tub plus other great activities around the park. My kids would live at the playground if they could. Lol. Last time we stayed here it was on the riverside near the boat launch and the sunset was amazing over the river.

      Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp

HORSE WAS SHOT & SHERIFF WOULD NOT COME

This went from a four star stay to one star in the blink of an eye. There is a shooting range directly behind this campground, and the horse trails lead right past it. On August 8th 2026 around 2PM, someone’s horse was shot while they were riding less than a half a mile away from camp and when they called 911, animal control came but police would NOT come even to investigate. This was reckless use of a firearm, animal endangerment, and honestly should be a felony. There is no way to accidentally be shooting at the trails from the shooting range, you have to DECIDE to do that. Police are absolutely useless, and now I know especially in this area the cops don’t give a damn about anyone’s safety.

You can hear shooting nearby all day and all night despite the posted hours at the range. Although it’s a free stay with a discover pass, I will NOT EVER stay here again and would not recommend this place to anyone with horses.

Cougar Rock Group Campground — Mount Rainier National Park

      Some sites better than others

Site C13 is directly next to bathrooms and trash. It is a pull through site. B loop has no facilities but does have unmarked paths that lead directly through C13’s driveway to get to the bathrooms. I had all manner of campers parading past my car, closer than arms length while I was sleeping inside, all night long and especially in the morning as the campers right behind my site walked directly through the campsite itself and around my car. I’d never stay at this one again without blocking off paths and having a big trailer to fill the space.

      Dispersed Camping FS-025

Decent dispersed near Mt Rainier NP

The pullout park spots are very close to the paved road leading to it. No potholes on the dirt road. Secluded/private. Tall rainforest trees provide shade during the day. There are several spots for vans, conversions, and short RVs. No Internet. No water. No vault toilets. No trash. Primitive dispersed site.

      FR74 dispersed

      Try another road/spot

The main pullout was taken. It looks as if the RV has been there for more than 14 days (it is on jack stands). Another reviewer mentioned the potholes. Thats a fact. I drive around in a RWD Chevy Astro van, and I bet that primitive, unguarded road chewed into the rubber between my suspension parts. No Internet. No access to the river, (unless you want to cut all the thick foliage)away like exploiters and trailblazers did in the 1800’s. ) Only one fire pit, the one the RV was at. You can drive up a little further and crash for the night. It is level. This dirt road is one lane. It is heavily non-RV friendly. I didn't even sleep there. I checked it out, then decided to drive to nearby Mount Rainier NP. This place was pretty though. Like a rainforest you see in Olympic NP.

      Straddleline Park

      Calm weekend

I’m a tent camper, and messed up and reserved a RV spot. I paid for another spot more suited for tent camping and moved over. When talking to the campsite manager the following day, she offered to refund the 2nights at the wrong site. We declined the refund just because it goes to keeping the area put together and she was doing a fantastic job keeping everything clean and restocked over the short stay we were there.

Men’s restroom had 2 urinals three stalls and a shower, women’s restroom had three stalls and a shower. One larger stall in both.

      The Waterfront at Potlatch

We’ll come back again and again

It’s so interesting to read past reviews before getting here and contrasting that with my experience. To be on the water, and be able to watch the tide move in and out every day on the beautiful and peaceful Hood Canal, is an absolute treasure. Yes, highway 101 is loud. There’s no doubt about that. But this small well-maintained RV park of only 16 sites, including full hook ups, is an absolute gem. We stayed here two weeks on site 16 and 11. (Much prefer 16 because it’s on the edge, how the sun is angled this time of the year, we quickly had loads of shade from our RV to sit in, and it’s by a little creek. But side 11 is also nice because there’s more opportunities to chitchat with people as you are in the middle of the campground.) We have met so many incredible people here and exchanged information so we can stay in touch. I will put this on my favorites list and absolutely intend return. In fact, many of the people we met here are people who come year after year after year. The only real downside in my opinion is the fact that there is nowhere that you can hike reachable by foot from the campground. So my husband, dog, and I did our daily walks at the marina parking lot nextdoor, where we would do loops, talk to the fisherman, and eat whatever blackberries ripened overnight. As we are full timers, I was absolutely content to sit outside our rig overlooking the water and work. If you are someone who needs a lot “to do “this may not be the campground for you. But if you are someone who loves to just be by the water and enjoy the tranquility and friendliness of fellow campers, this spot is for you.

    Guide to Milton

Camping spots near Milton, Washington offer a mix of wooded sites, waterfront access, and mountain views throughout the region. Campers can find several options within a 30-mile radius, where elevation ranges from sea level at Puget Sound beaches to approximately 800 feet in the foothills. Most camping areas receive 40-50 inches of annual rainfall, with summer temperatures typically ranging from 60-80°F during peak camping season.

    What to do

Explore beach and shorelines: At Penrose Point State Park Campground, visitors access waterfront areas with tide pools and swimming opportunities. "The beach is beautiful here! And the campsites are very secluded! There are tons of trees and bushes in between everybody's campsite," notes a recent camper.

Enjoy water recreation: Dash Point State Park Campground offers access to both freshwater and saltwater areas. "Facilities were good and trails around are fun and easy enough for me and 2 kids. The beach and its tides are why we came," shares a visitor.

Hiking trails: Near Kanaskat-Palmer State Park, campers find trail systems connecting campgrounds to rivers and scenic viewpoints. "Loved Kanaskat Palmer. Each site seems to have a trail connecting to the outer trail that runs along the river. Big entertainment for three boys who explored the woods and played on the rocks and in the eddy pools at the public river take-out."

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Penrose Point State Park Campground receives high marks for secluded camping spaces. "Sites and restrooms were clean. We had a great time exploring the beaches. Sites were reasonably private and quiet at night (except for a brief invasion of 6 raccoons at our site one night!)."

Easy access to urban conveniences: Many camping areas near Milton provide a balance of natural settings with quick access to supplies. At Dash Point, one reviewer notes: "I spent a weekend tent camping at Dash Point State Park, and honestly, it was a great time even though I completely failed to plan any meals. Thankfully, civilization is only about 15 minutes away."

Clean facilities: Kanaskat-Palmer State Park maintains well-regarded restrooms and showers. "Bathrooms in that loop were pretty nice... heated and very clean," reports a visitor. Another camper adds, "The campground has great clean and heated bathrooms. Sites and roads are paved."

    What you should know

Seasonal closures: Not all campgrounds operate year-round. While researching Saltwater State Park, a visitor learned: "The campground is open April 1–mid-December but the day use area is open year-round." As of 2024, another visitor reported: "Camping is closed for 2024 while the park undergoes planning and development efforts."

Reservation requirements: Campground availability varies significantly by season. At Game Farm Wilderness Campground in Auburn, a visitor advises: "Book early—reservations open January 1st!"

Noise considerations: Saltwater State Park Campground sits under flight paths from Sea-Tac airport. "No joke- ALL day and night the planes felt like they were in our tent/heads. Every 3-30 seconds it was LOUD," warns one camper. Another notes: "It's right in an urban/suburban corridor with incoming air traffic overhead constantly."

Rules enforcement: Camp rules receive consistent enforcement at some locations. At Kanaskat-Palmer, a camper observed: "This campground is heavily patrolled by the park rangers. I usually have contact with them in my campsite at least twice a day. I have been asked by the park rangers at 10:01 p.m. to be quite as myself and three 9 year old girls were talking too loud."

    Tips for camping with families

Beach access: Dash Point State Park Campground offers child-friendly water areas. "This campground was beautiful! There's a day use lake and we had a wonderful time camping here!" A different visitor mentions: "The beach is a short walk from camp, just long enough to make you feel like you earned your sunset view, but not so long that you regret your life choices."

Accommodations for groups: Game Farm Wilderness features facilities designed for larger family gatherings. The campground provides "18 campsites with water and electricity hookups, picnic tables, and fire pits. Visitors can enjoy the shared picnic shelter... making it convenient for scouting, church groups, or other gatherings."

Look for swimming options: When temperatures rise, water access becomes critical. One Kanaskat-Palmer visitor recommends: "We usually take the kids to the lake at Nolte state park (approx. 3 miles away) for water play," noting that the river near the campground can sometimes be too strong for children.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Sun Outdoors Gig Harbor provides comprehensive RV facilities. "Clean, friendly staff, everything we needed and more! They even had a dog wash," notes a first-time RVer. Another adds: "Very well laid out. Beautiful trees and landscaping. Well maintained, full facilities in amenities."

Site sizes and accessibility: For larger RVs, campground selection requires research. At Kanaskat-Palmer, a camper with a 30-foot motorhome reported: "The gravel pull through was so not level the jacks pushed the front tires 6 inches off the ground. But there was lots of private space and the trails were beautiful as they wrapped around the river."

Utility connections: Not all campgrounds offer full hookups. At Kanaskat-Palmer, "Hook ups are electric only, bring your water. The first time we went we did not know and our Basecamp's heat runs via the hot water heater. It was cold!"
