#1 Rock Tavern River Kamp

## Overview

Sherando Lake Group Camp is a part of the Sherando Lake Recreation Area and is popular with family groups, Boy and Girl Scouts, church groups and other local organizations. The recreation area is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known locally as the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where visitors enjoy hiking, fishing, swimming and relaxing. 

## Recreation

The 25 acre Lower Lake offers opportunities for swimming in a designated area with a sand beach, accessible ramp to the water's edge, and a beach bathhouse with changing and shower facilities. Fishing and boating are also available outside the designated swimming area in the lake. Fishing is in stocked waters during the spring and fall seasons. Visitors will need to have the appropriate Virginia fishing license, National Forest stamp and trout stamp. Boats with gasoline motors are not permitted on the lower lake - electric troll motors, canoes, kayaks, or similar boats only. A hand-carry ramp is available for access to the lake adjacent to the parking area. Fishing only is available at the 7 acre Upper Lake. This lake is also stocked during the spring and fall seasons and the appropriate licenses are required. Boats are allowed, but there is no launch access - hand carry only. Parking is available at a small area below the group camp area and a walking trail will lead you to the lake. Swimming is not allowed in the upper lake. Hiking trails surround the area offering everything from a short walk around the lake on the Lakeside and Cliff Trails to a day hike up the mountain on the White Rock Gap Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway. For the more adventurous hiker, more challenging day hikes and backpacking trips are available by heading up the Blue Loop Trail to the Torry Ridge Trail to Bald Mountain and beyond.

## Facilities

The five tent-only group campsites are located around the outside of the looping road. Each site can accommodate a maximum of 15 guests, or a large group can reserve all 5 sites to fit no more than 75 guests. Each site is delineated with fencing and is equipped with picnic tables, a grill, lantern posts, and a serving table. A bathhouse with flush toilets and showers is located at the upper end of the loop and a vault toilet is located at the lower end of the loop. The bathhouse was replaced during the 2019 season. Drinking water is available at each site. Food storage lockers are currently not available, but all food must be secured in a locked vehicle. Violators are subject to a fine.

## Natural Features

The group camp is located at the upper end of the Sherando Lake Recreation Area near the 7 acre upper lake. The group campsites are located around the outer portion of the loop with a large grass field on the interior of the loop for activities and games. The open grassy field provides an excellent opportunity for night time star gazing. 

## Nearby Attractions

There are opportunities for gas, groceries, and firewood at convenience stores and local vendors along the state road to Sherando Lake. Ice can be purchased at the Sherando Lake Visitor Center during operating hours, which vary seasonally. Additional supplies can be obtained in Stuarts Draft, about a 15 minute drive away. The Blue Ridge Parkway with its scenic overlooks and ridgetop views is a short 3 mile drive up State Route 664 from the Sherando Lake entrance. The Wintergreen Resort offers a golf course and ski area within 10 miles of Sherando Lake.

Camp Cove Creek is located in rural Faber, Virginia which is 20 minutes from Charlottesville in beautiful Nelson County. In addition to the many natural features like the Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail and the James River, Nelson is home to Wintergreen Resort and Oakridge Estate and hosts events such as the Lok'n Festival, Camp Jeep, and Overland Expo.

Camp Cove Creek is easily accessible via Rt 29 and Rt 6 east (Irish Road). Our property sits at the confluence of Bear and Cove creeks where wading is permitted and encouraged (with water shoes). We are continually trying to improve the site by removing old barbed wire, poison ivy, and invasive plant species in addition to planting Christmas Trees, raising 3 kids, and working 2 full time jobs so please forgive our works in progress. With this in mind this camp is purposefully being left in a natural, primitive state as an eco-alternative to commercial campgrounds. Adventure, overlander, and survivalist campers will love the rustic environment and appreciate the intentional lack of creature comforts. If you are nervous about scratches on your rig, maybe give us until 2023 to get a little more tree and road work done. That said, maybe we will just leave it alone because we like it this way!

Enter at the site we still call the Flea Market (1980's use of the hilltop). This is the top of our 20 acre camping playground. 4wd vehicles are welcomed to drive "the dirt loop" and camp anywhere along it or the creeks bordering it. The loop is bordered by Irish Road to the south and creek bottoms to the west and north.

Across the hill you may note a grand 3 story brick antebellum which belonged to my grandparents and was used as a hospital in the civil war. Nearby in the soapstone mining town of Schuyler you can visit the home place of Earl Hamner, best known for his creation of The Waltons TV show. While you're there check out the Waltons Mountain Museum, which happens to be my old elementary school and my parent's former high school. The dam bridge and quarry gardens in Schuyler are pretty cool too!



Camp Cove Creek

Welcome to our small Farm and Inn, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison County, Virginia. Located just minutes from Shenandoah National Park, we offer intimate nature inspired cottages and camping on our 120-acre working farm. Enjoy an evening under the stars with fireflies and a campfire after a long day's hike, fly fishing on one of our beautiful trout streams or touring the local vineyards and breweries.

We currently offer one cottage and a few campsites for our guests. Our campsites are all private, located acres apart with tables, chairs, firepits, some elevated sleeping areas, some hammock spots and a few with a roof. Many of our spots require walking away from your vehicle, short distances. We have three drive-in sites that will accommodate one or two vehicles. We do not allow RVs or trailers due to our narrow mountain driveway. Camper vans are welcome!

Our farm store includes Animal Welfare Approved products such as Eggs, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Lamb and Dairy from the farm as well as produce, jams and mushrooms and other items from our local community. We offer camping essentials, local art, bike rentals, farm experiences and tours.

The property has miles of trails along mountain spring fed steams, a small pond and access to three private acres on the Robinson River, a stocked Trout stream, just 2 miles down the road. Our property is centrally located to White Oak Canyon and Old Rag Mountain trailheads in the Shenandoah National Park as well as many vineyards, breweries and farm to table restaurants.

Our three drive-in campsites named Birdsong, Butterfly and Gypsy Camp:

Birdsong Camp, is very private, encompassing nearly an acre, has a large campfire with cooking grill, this site comes with a small amount of firewood, has a table and chairs that seat eight, a large level tent pad, suitable for two small tents and lots of room in the grass for additional tents. Birdsong even has its own private horseshoes pits and private seasonal bathhouse, with a flushing toilet, outdoor solar bag shower during warm weather and mini outdoor kitchen that comes with a few essentials, a sink to wash dishes, countertop space, cast iron pans, grilling and serving utensils, oil and a few spices. Birdsong camp is wooded with a small meadow, sits up on a hill overlooking our farm store area, has dark skies and faces southeast.

Butterfly Camp is named for the native plant garden that attract butterflies during the warm months, has mountain views that look to the west and open dark skies for viewing stars! This site offers a campfire with cooking grill, small handwashing/dish sink, a table for two, camp chairs, a level tent site and a covered changing station with a portable toilet using biobags and a solar shower during warm weather. Butterfly camp is the closest campsite to a local winery and brewery, which can be accessed via short one mile walk using our farm road, trail and a local backroad.

Gypsy Camp sits above our working farm in a pine forest with fall and winter views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Drive in access allows campers to pitch up to 4 tents on tent pads or on the forest floor. We provide a picnic table, fire ring with cooking grate and a small amount of firewood. This is a primitive site and no potable water, flushing toilets or hot showers are provided. We do offer a small hand/dishwashing station with non-potable water, a small outdoor covered changing station with a camp toilet that uses bio bags and a solar outdoor shower during summer months.

We have many rental options on the farm. We offer a complete setup to four person tents you setup. Let us do the work! Our tipi tent with queen size air mattress, linens, pillows, blankets is a popular choice for glamping!

Our walk-in sites Sparrow and Fiddlehead are accessed via our farm trails. Each site has a table with chairs, firepit with cooking grate, a hand/dishwashing station with non-potable water and a covered changing area and a portable toilet using biobags. Sparrow camp is located 0.2 mile up the Blue Quartz Trail, located in the forest, surrounded by Mountain Laurel on a small knoll with Fall and Winter views. It is suitable for two tents or four hammock tents. Fiddlehead camp is located 0.3 mile from our farm store along a trail that follows Lily's Creek. The site sits down by the small creek is surrounded by ferns in the warm season and has room for three tents and several hammocks. We offer four-person tent and hammock tent rentals plus a setup service and gear transportation service to these sites.





Watercress Inn at Landon Farm

Welcome to our super basic camping spot at the base of Round Hill (mountain). This is simply a long and very narrow grass/dyrt road that goes into the woods. We camp here with our 144" high roof Sprinter van but that just barely fits. Do NOT try to bring an RV any larger than that. Car camping or tent camping is cool. There are no bathroom facilities, no water, no electric… just woods, so please come with a self-contained camping potty or be prepared to bury your sh\*t :)

The site is very private and the little woodsy road is quite level for pitching a tent(s). There is a little fire pit at the end of the lane and plenty of kindling and dead wood around for building fires. Please respect the Earth and the Fire and do not place anything other than wood in the fire pit. PLEASE do not throw cigarette butts or any other trash on the land or in the fire. We own the land to the top of the little mountain so feel free to go for a hike.

There is a turn-around on the right about 3/4 of the way up the drive that we are able to turn our Sprinter van around in (there is a little old wheel barrow marking this spot). That is the only place to turn around. If you bring more than one vehicle, plan on being parked-in other than using the turn-around OR backing all the way out.

Kiss the Earth

Perched on top of Big Flat Mountain, this is one of the largest campgrounds in the park. Loft Mountain is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, providing a wilderness getaway in the historic Virginia mountains. Recreation Shenandoah National Park has over 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Some trails lead to a waterfall or lookout, while others wind deep into the forest and wilderness. Trails to the Big Run Wilderness area are accessible from the campground, and pristine waterfalls are a common site along the popular trails. Wildlife viewing is also a popular pastime, with black bears, wild turkey, deer, birds and countless other animals abundant across the park. The campground is located right off of Milepost 80 on the famous Skyline Drive, which runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Stunning views are available from any of the 75 scenic overlooks. Facilities This expansive campground offers 200 campsites, as well as modern conveniences like flush toilets, water and dump station, which create a comfortable camping experience. Pay showers nearby at the campstore. Natural Features Shenandoah National Park includes 300 square miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the southern Appalachians. The park rises above the Virginia Piedmont to its east and the Shenandoah Valley to its west. Loft Mountain's location on the mountain top offers easy access to Skyline Drive which offers sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the surrounding rolling hills and open meadows. Nearby Attractions Two visitor centers with bookstores and exhibits are located in the park (milepost 5 and milepost 51). Loft Mountain Campground

Staver Farm

116 acres of rolling hills, streams, old growth hardwood forest and other areas of young growth pine forest. This property has wildflower meadows and miles of interconnecting hiking trails.

It's been very dry and the sites are all accessible by vehicle except site 10 which is a "hike in" site. The distance is only about 20 yards along a beautiful hiking trail. Site 10 is especially cozy for nature lovers. In wet conditions we will drive you to your site in our 4WD vehicle if needed. (See details for each site)

Pitch your tent in the forest or meadow and walk the labyrinth, sit around a fire ring, and explore miles of marked hiking trails. More adventurous campers may want to explore the wilderness woods and observe the native plants and wildlife. There is an area of 50 acres across from the pipeline open for hiking. Here you will find a large system of beaver dams beaver channels and their ponds, along with all the native plants in this old growth hardwood forest. Deep in the 50 acres you will find these beaver dams where three small streams meet. These streams become "Clear Creek" and feed Lake Orange which is about 2 miles away as the crow flies.

Each designated site has a picnic table, a fire pit, a stash of firewood and container of fresh potable water.

Camp near a vernal pool and hear the frogs and crickets. (site 3 Salamander Loop) Great opportunities for bird watching. Investigate six different kinds of bamboo - including Giant Japanese Timber Bamboo, Giant Vivax, Giant Moso Gray, Thick-stem, Giant Black and Golden Bamboo. This is an herb farm - so there are lots of fruits and berries to sample in season.

We are 7 minutes from Warren Ferry, 12 minutes from Historic Hatton Ferry and the mighty James River. James River Reeling & Rafting and James River Runners LLC can accommodate your next adventure kayaking, canoeing or tubing the James. The site is a mere 15 minutes from downtown Scottsville with its quaint stores and Farmer's Market on the weekends. 

The Space:
Relax, unplug, and reconnect with Mother Nature and all her beauty at this private campsite.

Guest Access:
This is an exclusive Tentrr Signature campsite. Tentrr partners with land owners to offer unique accommodations in beautiful outdoor spaces. Our campsites are off-the-grid which means they generally do not have access to electricity, wifi, or modern plumbing. Instead, they offer the chance to relax, unplug, and fully experience nature! 

Your Tentrr campsite includes a 10'x12' (120 square feet) safari-style canvas tent on a raised wooden platform. Inside the tent you'll find one queen bed or a queen-size bunk bed (see photos for the exact setup). The tent is big enough for the bed plus one or two extra sleeping bags on the floor. Aside from the canvas tent, campers can also use the extra 5-person pop-up dome tent that___s provided. You'll also have a 6-ft picnic table, outdoor fire pit, 2 Tentrr Adirondack chairs, and a heating source to keep you warm and toasty at night. 

Group Camping: We welcome campers with larger parties, but the standard Tentrr setup only includes the canvas tent plus the additional pop-up dome tent. You may need and are encouraged to bring additional camping gear of your own if you plan on camping with a large party. 

Max Occupancy: This refers to the total number of campers allowed onsite with your reservation. You may have as many campers in your party up to the maximum limit that is set for the listing, but please note that the only bed provided as a standard amenity is the one set up inside the canvas tent. 

Toilets: Every campsite is equipped with a camp toilet (we call it the Tentrr Loo). This is a simple wooden box with a toilet seat and a bucket inside. To use, line the bucket with a CleanWaste Sani-Bag supplied at the camp prior to use. Afterwards, simply tie the bag up and place it in a trash bag. CleanWaste Sani-Bags use a NASA-developed gelling/deodorizing agent that helps prevent spills and keeps everyone safe and clean.

Showers: Every Signature campsite comes with a Coleman Sun Shower. The sun shower has a reservoir that holds up to 5 gallons of water, potentially enough for multiple showers. It's constructed of heat-locking material that warms the water when it's left in the sun, even on cool days.

Pet Fee - $25
Pets are welcome, please be mindful of the working dogs on the farm, and all of the wildlife. We require a one time fee to cover the extra cleaning.

Upon check out, you should leave-no-trace of your stay and be sure your campsite is returned to its natural glory! While Tentrr does not charge a cleaning fee, we do expect campsites to be left how they were found. After you check out, take everything you brought in and be sure to leave your trash at the designated location on the property. 

If a CampKeeper submits an incident report after your stay that details evidence of trash or damage to the campsite or the CampKeeper___s property, Tentrr reserves the right to charge a minimum cleaning fee of $50. Just make sure to follow the Camper Manual posted at your campsite and you'll be set!

We are a wilderness property and ask that you respect and care for it as we do.  It is also a working farm, so please be aware of animals and fences if walking or biking outside campsite area. Please leave our camp as good or better than when you arrived. Firearms are permitted for your protection, target shooting and hunting is strictly prohibited.  Our trails are well maintained and are ideal for walking. Driving to the site is not recommended for some vehicles; we will be happy to drop off you and your belongings if your vehicle is not off-road capable. A minimum of $50 cleaning fee will be charged for any mess left at the campsite.

You'll find that we are very relaxed and inclusive and welcome guests to enjoy the farm for all it has to offer. We're located in historic Scottsville Virginia(the heart of Virginia’s Monticello Wine Region). Seated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the 25 acre farm is home to many domestic, farm and wild animals. The lush green rolling pastures offer exquisite views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and direct access to the James River. It truly is a serene private paradise.

Our focus at the farm is two-fold. Promote agro-ecotourism and support our sister non-profit, Gentle Moon Conservancy. The mission of Gentle Moon is to provide lifetime care and shelter for animals in-need and inspire environmental stewardship through the power of individual action.

We are a working farm and have livestock guardian dogs who free roam guarding the farm. River, Ben, Daisy and PB are very friendly and will likely greet you when you first get here. They work at night so don’t be surprised if you hear them sounding off in the shadows at night protecting the farm from critters.

Each site is provided a fire pit and we sell firewood. Guests are welcome to bring their own firewood or collect the fallen dead limbs in the woods around the campsites. There are no bathrooms. Campers must pack out any trash and waste.

Safety and privacy is very important to us. We require a minimum of 50 feet between each campsite. The farm gate is locked overnight and reopened early in the morning. We will provide guests the gate code if needed. The dogs treat our guests as part of their family and patrol the campsites at night keeping critters away.

Please let us know when you book that you're bringing dog/s. Most of the animals on the farm roam free so you'll be greeted by a few Great Pyrenees(livestock guardian dogs), geese, goats, chickens, turkeys and peacocks. We also have barn cats that like to keep our guests company outside of the tiny house. Please be mindful of this if your dog is uncomfortable with other dogs and animals. Please don't bring your dog/s if they are high-strung, overly sensitive, aggressive, or not trained. Our livestock guardian dogs are hard-wired to protect so if they sense an uncomfortable vibe from another dog, it will make them uncomfortable and they need to be focused on doing their jobs.

Your dogs are welcome to be off-leash as long as they won't chase or harm people or the farm animals.

Valhalla Mountain Farm

I grow mushrooms and sell them at the Harrisonburg Farmers Market. The camping area is about an acre and is beside the house. Park under a canopy of red cedar trees which are bug resistant so very few mosquitoes. Two fireplaces, first come first serve. No neighbors yet close to Harrisonburg. Free firewood. No curfews.



Hawk Nest Mushroom Farm

Come enjoy Warren Ferry Landing, our expansive and shaded property just steps from the James River! Our property boasts 400+ feet of river frontage for you to enjoy and you can swim, fish, or even launch a canoe directly from our sites. There are TWO available camping sites on this property.

**About the property**

Our property is located adjacent to the historic Warren Ferry crossing of the James River. This is one of two historic ferry crossings near Scottsville, VA! The other, Hatton Ferry, is located a little bit down river from this location.

Our property is only 8 miles from Scottsville so if you need to pop into town for something you forgot it is quite easy. There are many other activities that you can partake in nearby or on our property. There is fishing, swimming, hiking, and kayaking all within easy reach of our property.

We do not live onsite but we aim to be easily reachable over the phone or text. If you have any questions before or during your stay please don’t hesitate to reach out. Keep in mind that during the night it is possible to hear some train activity from across the river.

Sherpa Forest

We are located in the heart of Madison County on scenic route 231 near Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon in Shenandoah National Park.

This charming cottage sits on a half-acre and is part of a 120-acre working farm. We have miles of walking paths or sit by the pond and enjoy a glass of wine or craft beer from one of our locals; Shotwell Run, DuCard or Revalation. Our little farm store offers Animal Welfare Approved meats, cheeses, eggs, seasonal fruits and veggies and locally made products.

The cottage was a local sawmill when it was built back in the 1950s. This one-bedroom cottage has a built-in King size bed with luxurious linens, a ceiling fan and TV with DVD player. The living room has an exposed heart pine ceiling, small office area with Wi-Fi, landline telephone, full size memory foam leather futon with linens, which is ideal for one adult or children, ceiling fan, large screen TV and DVD player, dining table, small free library as well as board games. Outdoors you can enjoy an evening at the firepit overlooking pastural and mountain views, sit on the covered porch or cook up something on the charcoal grill. You have access to our farm pond, trails, the farm store and barns, all accessible by vehicle just down the road.

Farm Experiences: Please contact us for a farm tour or if you would like to visit our farm store. We offer our Animal Welfare Approved Pork, Beef, Chicken, Eggs and Lamb as well as seasonal produce, local soaps, Shenandoah National Park maps and souvenirs, local art and essential camping gear. Sampler baskets are available for delivery to your cottage or pickup at the farm. Our breakfast basket, which includes AWA Farm Eggs, AWA Pork or Lamb Sausage, biscuit mix, local jam and local roasted coffee is a big hit for overnight guest.

Access to our river property located on a stocked trout stream is approximately 3 miles from the cottage. Just ask for a map.



Things to Note:

We are pet friendly but do require a pet fee. We ask that pets remain on a leash when at the cottage to prevent chasing of our neighbors' cats or horses. It is also required when on the farm to prevent any chasing of farm animals including, ducks, chickens, goats, sheep, cows, pigs and cats. Please note that we have farm dogs on the property who are not leashed but they do not visit the cottage.

Our cottage property is neighbored by a lovely small horse farm. The horses sometimes come say hello over the fence. Please do not touch or feed the horses or trespass over the fence.

Please note that Madison County and the area surrounding area including Shenandoah National Park has limited cell phone service and that high-speed internet is not an option in our area. Most of our guests with AT&T or Verizon will get one to two bars at the cottage. Our Wi-Fi is perfect for checking email or searching the internet, but our satellite is too slow for video or large downloads (doing this will make the internet speed even slower for the next person). Please take this time to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors!

Please note that the cottage is located in the country! All of our homes are on well water and many homes in the area have iron, sulfur and other elements in the drinking water.

Bugs and other pests: If you leave food on the counter or another mess in the kitchen, you might get a visit from an ant or mouse. If you leave food outside unattended you may get a visit from a raccoon, possum, a neighbor's dog or even a bear. If you leave the doors or windows open (without screens) you will likely get stink bugs, lady bugs, flies, spiders, etc. If you leave the lights off at night, you'll likely see fireflies lighting up the night sky during the summer.

Our Area:

The lower parking lot for Shenandoah National Park (SNP) White Oak Canyon is 10 miles down lovely back roads. The parking lot for SNP Old Rag Mountain is 8 miles away and for the real adventurous a great dirt backroad to travel by if you want to travel by bike. Shotwell Run Brewery and Blue Quartz Winery are a half mile down the road, DuCard, Sharp Rock and Revalation Vineyards are 6 miles. Bald Top Brewing is 9.5, Early Mountain and Prince Michel Vineyard are about 12 miles away. I can give you maps of nice driving tours down backroads. Sperryville is 13 miles to the North which has some great restaurant, shops and a small grocery store. Madison is 8 miles to the South and has a Foodlion, Dollar General, 24 hour 7-11, gas stations, fast food and a few restaurants. Looking for a great trout fishing spot? Our river property is 3 miles to the south on the Robinson River near Criglersville and a great gallery called The Possum Store, which has live music on the weekends. The Hughes River is 5 miles to the north and the Rose is 5 miles to the west, access to The Rapidan Wildlife Management Area and the Rapidan River, made famous by President Hoover, is 5 miles. Graves Mountain Lodge is 6 miles down the road. You can ride horses, attend their summer Bluegrass Festival, Fall Apple Festival or eat country style at one of their buffets, they also have a country store in Syria. Looking for some simple provisions, a great BBQ or ice cream, visit the Little Country Store just 3 miles down the road!

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay are some of the best camping locations in Virginia.
