Best RV Parks & Resorts near Norfolk, VA

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

RV parks near Norfolk include The Colonies RV and Travel Park at Fort Monroe with water, electric, and sewer hookups, and Holiday Trav-L-Park which offers concrete pads with full hookups. "Roads are decrepit with major potholes and in need of repair. The roads and some sites flood when raining," noted one visitor about Little Creek MWR RV Park, which requires military ID for access. Virginia Beach RV Resort maintains year-round availability with 30/50-amp service and pull-through sites suitable for larger motorhomes, while military personnel can access Sea Mist RV Campground on Dam Neck Annex, featuring both wooded and open camping loops.

Advance reservations are essential, particularly during summer beach season when campgrounds fill quickly. Most RV parks provide dump stations and trash service, though amenities vary significantly between military and civilian facilities. Sites near Shore Drive experience road noise that may disturb light sleepers. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, some parks experience jet noise from nearby Naval Air Station operations until around 10pm. Many parks offer laundry facilities and WiFi, though connectivity quality varies considerably. Military campgrounds typically offer lower rates but provide fewer amenities than commercial options. Gravel pads dominate at most locations, with some parks requiring longer-than-standard hookup hoses and electrical cords to reach connection points.

    American Heritage RV Park

Cannot Recommend for Big Rigs or Groups

We recently brought a group of ten campers to American Heritage RV Park because several of us had stayed there before and remembered it as a clean, well-kept park. Based on those positive experiences, we recommended it to our group and looked forward to sharing the campground with them. Unfortunately, this stay did not meet our expectations. Because sites are not assigned in advance, we could not choose sites that worked well for our group. Our 42-foot fifth wheel was placed in back-in site#136, which— like the other back-in sites— has a tree planted at the rear that prevents fully backing in. This left us very close to the road, with no way to park in front and no room to park alongside without blocking our steps. We first parked across the road in a grassy area but were told to move. When we parked in another group member’s pull-through site, we received a call saying two vehicles were not allowed— even though we observed several sites with two vehicles. The office directed us to the overflow lot near the front of the park, the farthest point from our site on the back row. When we asked to speak to the manager, we were told she works off-site. I emailed her asking her to visit our site, but she never responded. We were also told we could not put up a dog fence that extended onto the grass, though this rule was not posted anywhere. When booking months in advance, we requested that our sites be grouped near a cabin for one of our members— an 86-year-old woman in a wheelchair who requires oxygen. She was placed first in Cabin 5, then moved to Cabin 8 after a request for a larger and closer cabin. The second cabin was still far from our sites, down a hill and facing the woods in an unlit area, making it hazardous to reach at night, expecially for her. We also saw another camper with a rig identical to ours struggle to get into a back-in site, ultimately hitting a water faucet across the road, leaving the park without water for over two hours. These sites are simply not suitable for big rigs. While the park is clean, our overall experience was frustrating. Guests who book early, provide rig sizes, and pay for extended stays should reasonably expect sites that accommodate their camper and tow vehicle, and that group requests would be honored when possible. Large rigs should be cautious— the back-in sites are tight and maneuvering is difficult. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I cannot recommend American Heritage RV Park.

    Fort Eustis Recreation Area

    Excellent Bargain

    Season: year round

    Reservations: 757-878-2610 or 2565

    Pets: Leashed

    Sites: 9 $20.00 with w/e/s

    Cabins: 5 $75.00 daily

Picnic table, grill, playground, bowling, paintball, tennis, propane, water, electric, trash, laundry, showers, fishing

It was as if they have two sections in the campground. One section seems to have long term and then the section where the 9 sites are is nice and open with many mature trees. There is nice separation between sites. I loved the area but I am a country girl at heart. Nice to be in the heart of the military. BTW"GREAT" Military Transportation Museum. The commissary is fantastic, didn't go to the PX.

The Colonies RV and Travel Park

    Historic

Sites: 22 with 1 pull thru 13 full hookups 12 Tent sites

    Electric: 30-50 amp

This is a private campground and you do not have to be military to stay. It really is in a great location.

Beach, dump, firewood, showers, fire pit, store, ice picnic table, playground, toilets, concrete pads, horseshoes, trash. A wonderful spot for a campground on the Historic Fort Monroe. There is no gate to have to pass through to reach the campground. It is located on the far end and on a beautiful flat grassy area with beautiful mature trees. Well maintained and very quiet. While there you must check out the Fort Monroe Casement Museum. You have water on two sides with excellent walking area.

    American Heritage RV Park

Good location with lots to do within an hour's drive

Usually when we go out with our trailer, the campground is basically the "destination." In this case, the campground was a place to park our "mobile motel room" so we could explore the area and do a day trip to the beach.

This was our first time staying where full hookups were standard, and we had a pull-through site on a level concrete pad. A picnic table was provided, and a metal "fire pit" will be delivered to your site if requested.

There was decent space between the sites, though of course not like what you find at a state park! But speaking of which, American Heritage RV Park is just 4 miles from York River State Park. After getting set up, we went there and we highly recommend it for nature lovers.

The campground is also close to Colonial Williamsburg, and a little over an hour away (depending on traffic) from Virginia Beach and First Landing State Park.

The bathrooms were clean, showers had hot water, and the campground was very quiet. A train comes through the area a couple of times a day (and night), but we didn't find that to be a problem.

It's close to I-64 (easy on/off) and easy to find, though the actual road INTO the campground is pretty narrow.

We chose to stay here instead of one of the campgrounds in VA Beach just because traffic in and around VA Beach is crazy. Seriously. I felt much better about just driving there with my car instead of towing the trailer through that mess.

We didn't check out the pool, but it seemed nice and we saw people swimming. Some folks we met said they'd been at the campground a week.

Be sure to ask about AARP, Good Sam, AAA, or other memberships you have because they'll give a 10% discount when you check in. We had good cell service on AT&T and Sprint networks.

While it was the most expensive place we've stayed so far, compared to an oceanfront motel room at VA Beach during peak season, it was a very good deal. We'll probably stay here again in the future.

More about this trip (and all we did in 2 days!!) is on my blog:

Guide to Norfolk

Norfolk area campgrounds provide access to both the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean coastlines. Most campgrounds stay open year-round with summer high temperatures averaging 87°F and winter lows rarely dropping below freezing. Tent camping opportunities are limited compared to RV sites, with military installations operating several campgrounds requiring Department of Defense identification for entry.

What to do

Explore beach access: At The Colonies RV and Travel Park, beach access is just a short walk from camp. "The stairs are broken down to the beach, so you have to climb over the rail. The campground is great if you have a number of campers, you can hangout in the middle," notes one visitor.

Visit historic sites: Fort Monroe National Monument surrounds The Colonies RV Park with military history dating back to the 1800s. "Located on the historic Fort Monroe, VA the fort has a lot to offer. No reason to leave but if you do there's plenty in surrounding areas," according to one reviewer.

Go fishing: Several campgrounds offer fishing opportunities on base. At Military Park Cheatham Annex, campers can fish in "two lakes and the York River along with an 18 hole golf course." The park has "more than 10 miles of hiking and biking trails" for additional recreation.

What campers like

Beach proximity: Access to shorelines ranks high among camper preferences. One reviewer described Sea Mist RV Campground as having "direct access to an incredible extensive strand of premier beach right on the ocean, with the protection of a natural sand dune barrier."

Military recreation facilities: Military campgrounds offer extensive recreation equipment rentals. At Dam Neck Annex, "the base MWR has extensive recreational equipment rentals, and you would have access to other typical base amenities."

Water views: The Colonies campers enjoy panoramic water views. "One of the most scenic and peaceful campgrounds in the state of Virginia, you are right by the water (it's almost like an island), 2 minutes walking distance from a secluded beach," shares one reviewer about the Fort Monroe location.

What you should know

Military ID requirements: Multiple rv sites near Norfolk, Virginia require military identification for access. At Little Creek MWR RV Park, "This campground is a recreational opportunity for active and retired military and their families" with one camper noting it's "on post, so ID required."

Reservation requirements: Advance booking is essential for all campgrounds in the region. At American Heritage RV Park, "reservations are recommended and available online."

Limited tent camping: Sea Mist RV Campground specifically prohibits tent camping. "We weren't able to stay here because on arrival we found out that not only do they not have designated tent sites, but that tenters aren't even allowed!"

WiFi limitations: Internet connectivity varies significantly by location. At Virginia Beach RV Resort, "The WiFi didn't seem to exist unless you were close to their buildings. Everyone was friendly and was a nice quiet getaway to let the kids ride bikes and fish."

Tips for camping with families

Pool activities: Several rv sites near Norfolk offer swimming pools. At American Heritage RV Park, families enjoy "Lots to do-pickleball, playground, volleyball mini golf, two nature trails and a nice-sized pool."

Playground access: Most family-oriented campgrounds maintain playground equipment. Virginia Beach RV Resort has a playground that one visitor described as "basic, but a playground non the less. Pools were nice and never really crowded."

Kid-friendly beaches: At Grey's Point Camp, "There are so many activities for kids at this campground. There are waters slides, playgrounds, fishing, water rentals, and campground sponsored fun." These amenities make it particularly suitable for families with children of various ages.

Tips from RVers

Site sizes: RV site dimensions vary widely between campgrounds. At Grey's Point Camp, "The sites are spacious and always clean when we arrive. The new bath house is excellent. The views of the 'Rivah' are phenomenal."

Hookup locations: At Little Creek, hookup connections require planning. "The connection boxes are set back pretty far on the sites, so you need longer hoses/cords. We had a long electric cord that reached and had to add a second water hose and second section of sewer hose to connect."

Pad types: Most rv sites near Norfolk feature concrete pads. American Heritage RV Park provides "a leveled concrete site with room to park our towed vehicle while still attached to our Motor Home. We also had a level concrete patio with a picnic table."
