Best Campgrounds near Maidens, VA

Campgrounds near Maidens, Virginia range from state parks with full amenities to family-oriented private campgrounds, all within a short drive of Richmond. Powhatan State Park Campground offers tent, RV, cabin, and yurt accommodations with both primitive and developed sites along the James River. Pocahontas State Park, Virginia's largest at nearly 8,000 acres, provides extensive camping options with electric hookups and water-front sites. Both parks maintain well-developed trail systems for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, creating mixed-use recreation areas that appeal to diverse outdoor enthusiasts.

Road conditions throughout the region remain accessible for most vehicles, though some primitive camping areas may require higher clearance during wet weather. Most campgrounds operate year-round, with peak season running April through October. A camper noted, "The sites were level, and many of them were either paved or gravel. I liked the separation and privacy between most of the campsites." Advance reservations are strongly recommended for weekend stays, particularly at waterfront sites which fill quickly during summer months. The climate features hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F, while spring and fall offer more moderate conditions. Winter camping is available but facilities may be limited, with some bathhouses and water sources winterized.

Waterfront camping represents a significant draw in the region, with Bear Creek Lake State Park and Lake Anna State Park offering popular lakeside sites. Several visitors highlighted the family-friendly atmosphere at these locations, with one review mentioning that "the tent pads are filled with shredded tires instead of gravel or dirt, which provides a little extra cushion." Campgrounds in the area typically feature clean bathhouses with hot showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. Wildlife viewing opportunities include waterfowl, herons, and woodland species. Campers should be aware of seasonal tick activity, particularly in wooded areas during warmer months. The proximity to Richmond (approximately 30-45 minutes) makes these campgrounds convenient weekend destinations while still providing a sense of woodland seclusion.

    Lake Anna State Park Campground

    Nice space

Great space for rvs and tents. Cabins and yurts available, bath house clean, but toilet paper is thinner than dry onion skin. Beach area is 1/2 mile paved walk. Beach very crowded on weekends.

Shenandoah Crossing, a Bluegreen Vacations Resort

    Not really camping

This is a very developed campground…mayme over developed for me. Concrete pads, paved roads, street lights. Lots of amenities, like pool, playground, very nice showers, There is a gate house do you need the code to get in.

    Christopher Run Campground

Very big, a little rough- no internet

This is a big campground that caters to boaters on Lake Anna. We probably made a mistake coming on a holiday weekend. Many “holiday” campers with extra vehicles, boats and people! The sites are good size, but not very level. We did finally get ours squared away. Mostly wooded, with shade. Our site D9, backed up to a small wooded section. Some full hookups. Tent sites, numerous semi-permanent people. Showers and bathrooms are clean, hot water, but it’s timed, so you have to keep pushing their buttons to continue a shower. They have everyone sign a waiver to release them of liabilities. Never had anyone do that before. Playground, beach, mini golf, canoe rental, boat slips, laundry, convenience store. NO INTERNET

    Cozy Acres Campground RV Resort

    cute - family oriented

only planned on staying a night but ended up staying for two.

had the most unique store filled with actual tools/useful equipment and ANTIQUES!! so cute and LOVED the game room - definitely the best options we’ve seen so far HOWEVER it closed the same time as store hours so timing was extremely awkward.

bathhouses appeared super nice at first but were filled with water by the end of the day - absolutely disgusting to stand in other people’s shower water. water pressure was also insane haha.

defo family oriented …. super friendly though.

also have to call to book

very friendly camp hosts!! helped us avoid hurricane erin

    James River Wildlife Management Area

Worth the drive for the solitude

I was unsure if I was in the right area. I never saw another person camping, but I did get out of my rig and ask a couple of people that were using brush hogs to mow with and they said Yep come on down here and just park wherever you want to as long as it’s not within 300 feet of the boat put in. Everything else is fair game, it’s for me being in the 29 foot classy. I opted to park it in a field/parking area at the entrance. I was the only one here all day.

    Picture Lake Campground

    Wonderful place

We absolutely loved this park. We came here to dive at Lake Phoenix (they have a no pet policy this year) and have our pup with us. The staff was so nice. We were close to the front. They have full hookups. The sewage was a little weird to hookup but we figured it out. They have a bathhouse (we didn't use) a nice pool, laundry facilities, a little store, and trash in the back. The lake is beautiful and this was close to a lot of things. The front spot is are fully paved and require minimal leveling

    Fredericksburg-Washington DC KOA

    Small and quiet

We stayed here for one night for our travel home. Not far off i95, plenty of signage telling you where to go.

Once here it's tucked away nicely away from everything, sites feel spacious enough and mostly level on their own.

Pool facility looks clean and good size for all to enjoy. With a playground right next to it and a small mining operation for the kiddos.

Will likely be back to explore the area more!

    Small Country Campground

    Hidden Gem

This campground is underrated! Found this place by accident. Don’t let the name fool you, this place is the largest camp resort in the area. It has everything even a small grocery store.
