Prince William Forest RV Campground — Prince William Forest Park

    Convenient

Campground is close (ish) to the DC area. It is easy and convenient to get to. Almost all sites are pull through and are close together. Most have some tree cover (and some of the trees could use a trim along the roads). Some long term guests occupy the back sites which have sewer.

Close to Prince William Forest which is a fantastic National Parks forest.

    Att coverage is good.

    Playground is nice.

    Powhatan State Park Campground

    Huge park, great sites!

What a beautiful park! Over 1500 acres with 40 sites, this trip was the start of the camping season for me- the opening weekend for camping in State Parks in VA(COVID-19). The park and grounds are extremely well-maintained. I was very happy to see such a clean bathhouse, especially during the current pandemic. Each staff member I encountered was extremely helpful and polite. The park has lots of trails, miles of open meadows, and James River access. Great park for bicycling. The sites in the River Bend Campground(main campground) are private and wooded, especially this time of year when the trees are so full. The map makes it look like they’re really close together so I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to my site, which was the las time available for booking(#16). There are 29 tent/RV sites and three yurts. The sites are gravel and include a picnic table, lantern/trash pole, and a fire pit with grill gate. Theres also a group site for 24 or so, bit that’s not open at the moment due to state restrictions. There’s overflow parking for the campground, dumpsters, and a dump station. Some are pull-through for RVSs and many have water/electric. Wood is for sale at the park but no ice or refreshments. Pet-friendly. There are also laundry facilities at the main bathhouse, nice hot/cold showers. Many picnic areas and a playground. There’s also a canoe-in site with 8 primitive sites: no water, electricity, or facilities(there’s a pit toilet). Depending on the time of the year they might be in the flood zone if the river is high, which it was during this trip. Some of those sites can also be booked for hiking into- it’s only a 0.2 walk from the parking lot. Tabb Monument State Park is nearby if you’re working your way through the parks as I am (no overnight facilities there). You’re also about 10-15 minutes from the town of Powhatan so if you need groceries or gas, you’re not far from Sheetz, Food Lion, etc. Loved this park so much and will definitely be returning!!!

    Bull Run Regional Park

Great Stay at Bull Run Reg. Park

Great Park, friendly staff, clean facilities. We stayed with our Pop Up for two nights at an electric -supported site. Portable water and dumping station located at the camp store. We stayed at site 146 on the first caul-de-sac off the first loop just another site away from the bath house (which was pretty clean). We got rained on the first night so things got a little muddy but nothing out of hand. Tons of free activities for the kiddos facilitated by the camp staff over the weekends. Face-painting, ice cream sundaes, S'Mores, hay rides and a rock wall. Park has a lot of things to do as well just outside the campground. We took a try at disc golf which was a lot of fun. Pet friendly. We'll be back!

    Americamps RV Resort

    Great RV Resort

We picked Americamps because we were traveling through the Richmond area and it was very convenient to I-95. We usually pass up on RV parks because most are wide open fields with large trailers and/or motor homes parked close together and prefer more private camp spots in out teardrop. But upon our arrival we were happily surprised. Amricamps has mostly full hook up sites (about 2/3 pull through sites and a 1/3 back in) and a small tent area with a handful of sites. While the sites were close together in typical RV park style, they were not scrapping together like we’ve seen at some places and there were many well established trees to provide lots of share instead of being in an open field. All the sites were level, most were gravel, but some were concrete pads. All style sites include a picnic table and fire ring. Hook ups also included cable with about 70 channels.

Check-in was easy and the staff was very helpful. Check-in is at noon, but our road trip got us there about 11:20 and the staff had no problem letting us in early. Thanks! A host guides you to your site and assist you in positioning if needed. The campground is gated and you are provided a gate code. We stayed on site D-08 on this visit. The site was level, gravel, and had good shade.

We used the bathhouse in the main building as it was closest to our site. It was very clean and air-conditioned, which was nice on this warm summer stay. There is a second bathhouse on the property but we did not visit it.

Firewood and a good-sized camp store was available at the office. The resort has many amenities to include a heated pool, fitness center, playground, dog park, laundry, a rally room with a large deck and gas grill, dump station, and propane filling station.

We found good cell phone service with Verizon throughout the property. The campground did have wi-fi and it worked good at our site.

Pro Tip: There is a FREE breakfast every morning in the rally room. The morning we were there they were making waffles, and had bagels, pastries, fruit, and a variety of drinks to include coffee. They also had an ice cream social in the rally room the first night we were there, so watch the bulletin board for cool events like that. Additionally, right across the street (a short walk depending on where your site is in the park) there is a brewery that also serves food.

While we were hesitant to stay at a RV park, we found this place to a pleasant surprise. Very quiet and clean for its size. We’ll definitely keep this one on the list when passing through Richmond.

    Americamps RV Resort

    Great Proximity to Richmond

We’re originally from Richmond and needed a centrally located campground to spend 5 weeks in our class A while taking care of some things in town. (We’re full time travelers in our motorhome.) The location is the best in the Richmond area for a full hookup campground for a large RV. It’s right off I-95 and is mostly good size pull through sites. The kids loved the playground and pool area. The staff was friendly and put on some fun events during the time we were there like mimosas on Mother’s Day and a larger race day event with a band and food trucks. It’s a large campground but was surprisingly quiet. Very convenient to restaurants and shopping. Would certainly recommend for a quick overnight stay or if you need to visit Richmond.

    Christopher Run Campground

    Great for Adults

The campground is pretty big and has a wonderful beach with swim access to the lake. Most of the campers are long time seasonal campers, and a lot even live here. The beach is well maintained and campsites are spacious. Pull through options available. The playground is for kids 5+ and there’s not much to do outside of swimming in the lake for 5 and under. People at the lake were friendly but long term campers seemed to want to have nothing to do with anyone. I’d recommend for adults and teens more so than large families with younger kiddos.

    Americamps RV Resort

    Very Clean

Spent the night here on site E4. It is a level gravel site with full hookups, including cable TV. There is a pool, playground, meeting room, bar and BBQ area, laundry facilities as well as shower rooms. Each site had plenty of room. Ours was a pull through and we didn't have to unhook to fit! The campground is very clean with beautiful landscaping.

    Powhatan State Park Campground

    Great park!

    Louise F. Cosca Regional Park

    Nice small campground

This campground is about 25 sites. Only 5 sites have electric (2, 5, 18, 24, 25)but all 25 sites have water hookup. Weekends are some what noisy because of the games across the street in the park. This is not a gated campground so anyone can come through and have a tour. Park Police patrol the campground 2 times a day. Also the bathrooms are clean, their are 2 stalls and 1 shower, cleaned daily by park rangers. Raccoons run wild at night flipping trash can lids on your campsite hunting for food. Use repel spray to keep the raccoons off your site. Site 24 and 25 are very close together but the other sites are at a distance however, 6 of the 25 sites are unleveled so tent camping is probably the only option. This is not big rig friendly but there are pull through sites but the roads are very narrow and there is only 1 way in and 1 way out (same entrance) there is a dump station at the beginning of the campground with access to water as well. Free of charge. This is a quiet campground and it's cheap for maryland residents and about $20 for non-resident. There is no registration on site it's online only. www.pgparksdirect.com

Guide to Fredericksburg

Campgrounds near Fredericksburg, Virginia offer diverse terrain options ranging from riverside locations along the Potomac to forested settings within Prince William Forest. The region's mix of public and military facilities provides camping accessibility across different price points. Winter camping options remain available at several year-round campgrounds despite the area's seasonal temperature fluctuations.

What to do

Historical exploration opportunities: Prince William Forest RV Campground provides a strategic base for Civil War history enthusiasts. "National Marine Corp Museum just around corner. DC just up the road," notes Kenneth H. The campground's proximity to multiple historical sites makes it particularly valuable for history-focused trips.

Water activities at Harbor View: Thousand Trails Harbor View campground offers water recreation options during summer months. "We also loved going to Westmoreland park which was practically next door to Harbor View. Great trails and fossil beach was fun," reports Ariel F. The campground's location provides easy access to both Colonial Beach waterfront and nearby fossil hunting.

Wildlife observation at Oak Ridge: The wooded setting at Oak Ridge Campground creates opportunities for wildlife viewing during spring and fall. "We saw lots of wildlife but had no issues with trash or food (raccoons left everything alone)," shares Lisa P. The campground's location deep within Prince William Forest Park (13 miles from the entrance gate) enhances nature immersion.

Forest hiking trails: Bull Run Regional Park offers extensive trail networks for hiking enthusiasts. "There are miles of trails and my gkids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt. You even get a prize when you finish," reports Bridget H. The park's trail system accommodates various skill levels and includes educational components.

What campers like

Clean, modern facilities: Bull Run Regional Park receives consistent praise for its bathroom facilities. "I'll go again just for the showers. Locking doors, individual stalls. Hot dog. Best camping showers I've ever had," writes Yvonne B. The campground maintains bathroom cleanliness even during busy holiday weekends.

Military base camping access: Military Park Fort AP Hill Champs Camp RV Park provides service members a quiet camping option. "Clean, quiet little park on A.P. Hill base. RV hookups, great wifi, showers and laundry are spotless. Not much for kids to do but A.P Hill is huge! Great hiking, biking, wildlife," shares MH. Department of Defense ID holders appreciate the well-maintained facilities.

Level campsite options: Americamps RV Resort offers level sites for easy setup. "All the sites were level, gravel, and had good shade," notes Cat R. The campground's attention to site preparation saves campers setup time and leveling challenges.

Morning meal amenities: Americamps provides complimentary breakfast for campers. "There is a FREE breakfast every morning in the rally room. The morning we were there they were making waffles, and had bagels, pastries, fruit, and a variety of drinks to include coffee," Steve V. reports. This amenity reduces meal planning needs for short-term stays.

What you should know

Limited level sites: Some campgrounds require extensive leveling equipment. At Prince William Forest RV Campground, "The back row is steep. We were unable to get our Super C level," warns Cheryl D. First-time visitors should bring additional leveling blocks or request specific rows when making reservations.

Reservation timing considerations: Fredericksburg-Washington DC KOA fills quickly during peak seasons. "Advance reservations are highly recommended," particularly for weekend stays. The campground's popularity means last-minute availability remains limited, especially for holiday periods.

Size restrictions for certain parks: Oak Ridge Campground enforces strict vehicle size limitations. Sites vary significantly in size with some imposing tight spacing. Tracy R. observes that "Sites varied greatly in size. Some seemed entirely too close, others spread apart." Larger RVs should confirm site compatibility before booking.

Seasonal pest concerns: Tick activity affects some forested campgrounds during warmer months. "Ticks were really bad. We killed dozens and ended up taking at least one with us when we left," cautions Tracy R. regarding Oak Ridge Campground. Standard insect repellent may not provide complete protection.

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: Thousand Trails Harbor View offers family-friendly amenities. "Everybody was super friendly and we felt very comfortable letting our kids go over to the playground by themselves," shares Em M. The campground layout allows parents to maintain sight lines to recreation areas.

Educational opportunities: Bull Run Regional Park incorporates learning activities for children. "There are tons of amenities here. Really great for beginner campers," notes Daniel S. The park's interpretive programs provide structure for family outings.

Pool facilities: Americamps RV Resort maintains a well-appointed swimming pool. "The grounds themselves have a fitness facility and pool which are nice, a group gathering area and also a very substantial store," reports Crystal C. The pool area includes lighting features and fountains popular with younger campers.

Weekend activities: Fredericksburg-Washington DC KOA schedules regular family events. "It happened to be trick or treat night. There were several events during the day for the kiddos that were here," notes Brian S. The campground's organized activities reduce planning burden for parents.

Tips from RVers

Cell service reliability: Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp provides dependable connectivity. "Good site, secure location, decent facilities with solid WiFi," reports Thomas. Remote workers visiting RV sites near Fredericksburg, Virginia can maintain productivity while camping.

Pull-through site availability: Prince William Forest RV Campground offers convenient pull-through sites. "Snug campground with nice, clean bathroom and pool. Adjacent to Prince William Forest, near shops and restaurants," writes Laura G. These sites reduce maneuvering challenges for less experienced RV drivers.

Hookup variations: Aquia Pines Campground provides water and electric connections with varying quality. "Site was full hookups and level. Staff was pleasant and offered information on area," notes Bill V. The campground's dump station accommodates those without sewer connections.

Winter accessibility: Multiple campgrounds including Fredericksburg KOA remain open year-round for RV camping. "We have stayed at this campground several times and always enjoyed it. Quiet and secluded," shares Brian R. Winter campers benefit from reduced crowds and continued access to full hookup sites.
