Reservoir-edge sites and open water views define the experience at Spruce Run Recreation Area, a state-managed campground outside Clinton, New Jersey that draws tent campers, RV travelers, and paddlers to the shores of Spruce Run Reservoir. The campground runs from April through October, and sites fill quickly on summer weekends. Reservations are available and worth booking early, particularly for waterfront spots.
Water access is the campground's most consistent draw. Multiple reviewers note that kayaks launch easily from the shoreline, and boat and kayak rentals are available on-site when staffed. Waterfront sites give campers direct sightlines over the reservoir, including views of sunrise and sunset from the water's edge. One tradeoff worth knowing: sites with the best water positioning tend to lack full hookups. Ruette W. notes that hookup sites with electric and water "are not on the water, but in the parking lot," while the water-adjacent sites run on solar or generator power. The campground does provide full hookups including sewer for RVs up to 30 feet, along with WiFi, a dump station, and showers.
Bathroom quality comes up repeatedly in reviews, and the picture is mixed. Some visitors report clean, well-stocked facilities; others describe neglected conditions, particularly on busy summer weekends. Showers run cold, according to recent reports. The campground provides an outdoor dishwashing sink at the shelter area, which campers find useful. Noise is another factor: Interstate 78 is audible at night once the campground quiets down, especially from sites farther from the water.
Shelters with bunk beds and wood stoves are available as an alternative to tent or RV camping, and they include a front porch, fire ring, and picnic table. The surrounding area has hiking trails, and nearby Ken Lockwood Gorge is a short drive for fly fishing and walking. Voorhees State Park Campground sits a few miles to the northeast for campers looking to compare options, and Jugtown Mountain Campsites provides another alternative to the west. For campers weighing campgrounds near Spruce Run Recreation Area, the region has a reasonable range of choices across camping styles.
Weeknight stays tend to run quieter than weekends, when larger groups can stretch past the 10 p.m. curfew. Deer are frequently spotted around the sites. Campers who prioritize water access and are flexible about amenity quality will find Spruce Run worth a visit.
