Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Shepherd, TX

Double Lake Recreation Area maintains pet-friendly campsites throughout its facilities within Sam Houston National Forest, with full hookup RV sites available alongside more primitive tent camping options. Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed at all times in the campground and on surrounding trails. The area features spacious, well-separated sites that provide good privacy for families camping with dogs. Sites are huge and well kept with private paths to the lake where dogs can access water, though pets are not allowed on the designated swimming beach. The miles of well-defined hiking and mountain biking trails throughout the forest provide excellent opportunities for exercising pets.

Wolf Creek Park and Lake Livingston State Park accommodate pets with similar leash restrictions and designated pet-friendly areas. Campers report trails surrounding Double Lake are perfect for morning walks with pets, with the 9-mile Double Lake Trail offering an easy footpath through the forest. The campground's layout allows for quiet, peaceful camping even when hiking with dogs. Many sites back up to wooded areas, minimizing interactions between different campers' pets. All pet owners must clean up after their animals, with waste disposal facilities available at most campgrounds. During summer months, the abundant shade trees at Double Lake provide important protection from heat for pets, making it a good option for camping with dogs during Texas' warmer seasons.

Could use updates to some sites

We spend Thanksgiving in this campground. We arrived shortly after checkin and had limited selection of sites. The person at checkin did have a good site recommendation. Beware that not all sites have full hookups. For the size of the place I would have explained small convenience store but they only had ice. Our site backed up to some trees so that was nice. Good dog park and plenty of activities available. I walk the dog a lot and run and road around the grounds needs to be repaved, lots of pot holes and uneven areas.

    7 Bridges Luxury RV Resort

Nice but lacks in a few things

The dog park is horrible. It’s all sand and no bag dispenser like other “luxury” resorts have had. The internet is not good at all…tv cut out every two minutes. Nice pool. No trash pick up on Memorial Day and the dumpster was overflowing by that afternoon. Site 55 is NOT for RVs over 36 feet. We have a 42 ft fifth wheel and it was horrible trying to get into the spot.

    Thousand Trails Lake Conroe

Each time is a new experience

This is our 4th trip here. And we have already planned our 5th. We love how big this park is. Each time we come and get a new site, it’s like a whole new park. Nestled in the trees our first time out with rocks, and today we are on a flat concrete pad. Lots of room to bike. We love the lake. We haven’t even used the pool or facilities because of Covid but we still love it here. Everyone complains of the roads but nothing different than the state parks we use. So far we have had no problems with the equipment or hook ups. Bath houses are nice but we don’t use them. The dog park is perfect for you and your puppers to make new friends. There is a boat launch and pier for fishing. Plus catfish cove. I did not have any luck in the little bass pond. I will say, this place gets busy on a Holiday but the kids like having so many others to play with. We especially loved our evening basketball tournaments.

    Rayford Crossing RV Resort

    Well Managed and Manicured

We had to return our travel trailer to the dealership for some warranty work and wanted to have one last little getaway before handing it over. We opted to stay somewhere in the vicinity of the dealership, and this campground had an opening. So, we booked one of the last remaining sites and hit the road!

Located in a suburban area north of Houston, the campground was very easy to find. It was nestled among nice suburban homes but still close to the amenities of a suburban city. We arrived after the employees left the front desk, so they instructed us to pick up our materials at the front office. We immediately noticed how well maintained this campground was. We easily found Site 21, a standard back in site. The sites are all concrete and level with a yard of grass and full hookups, which we really appreciate. We were surprised that our site didn’t have a picnic table like we thought, but we probably could have called to request one (wasn’t a huge issue in this July Texas heat).

This campground is more like a residential area. We noticed that many vehicles were gone early on a weekday morning. Many of the “campers” had potted plants and other items that indicated they were long-term occupants. There were many rules for the campground such as no items allowed on the grass or under RVs and no trash cans at sites, but none of these were unreasonable. Staff was visible throughout the day, often maintaining the grounds and collecting trash at each site (trash collection is each morning). It was extremely quiet, clean, and manicured.

Would we visit this campground again? Yes, if we plan to visit the Houston area for business in the future. We prefer the forest and the solitude that it affords, but this is a nice place to stay if you have business in the area. Rayford Crossing has amenities that may appeal to families with children such as a playground, beautiful pool, hot tub, shuffleboard, horse shoes, and fishing. The nice paved roads and sites and the dog park were nice as well. Our only complaints would be the price and lack of privacy, but I guess that’s to be expected in an RV resort near a major US city like Houston. Basically, it served our purpose.
