Best Campgrounds near Fresno, TX

Fresno, Texas camping options include several established RV resorts and campgrounds concentrated in the greater Houston metropolitan area. Campgrounds like Brazos Bend State Park and Southlake RV Resort accommodate various camping styles including tent camping, RV sites, and cabin rentals. Most properties in this region feature full hookup sites suitable for recreational vehicles, with several offering cabin accommodations for those without camping equipment. The flat terrain throughout the area provides accessibility, though most campgrounds maintain a developed, resort-like atmosphere rather than primitive or backcountry experiences.

Road access to camping areas near Fresno is generally straightforward with paved approaches, making most sites accessible without specialized vehicles. Weather considerations primarily involve summer heat and humidity along with occasional heavy rainfall. "The area is relatively safe. There is a police officer or two, and a police dog, that live at the RV Park," noted one visitor about security at a nearby campground. Most established campgrounds in the region operate year-round with advance reservations recommended, particularly for weekend stays. Gated entry is common at many locations, providing security but requiring campers to obtain access codes before arrival. Sites within proximity to medical facilities offer shuttle services, beneficial for visitors with healthcare needs.

Several visitors emphasize the quality of amenities at campgrounds in the region rather than natural features. Developed facilities typically include swimming pools, recreation areas, and clean shower facilities. A recent review noted, "The park is VERY clean and also quiet! It's close to everything so that's a major plus." RV resorts near major highways provide convenient access to urban attractions but may experience traffic noise. Campers report high satisfaction with properties featuring water features like small lakes or ponds. While most campgrounds maintain landscaped grounds, natural shade from mature trees is limited at many sites. The proximity to Houston provides convenient access to museums, medical facilities, and urban amenities while camping, making these locations popular with travelers needing city access.

    Stella Mare RV Resort

    Three Day Stay in Galveston

Very nice RV park. Friendly staff, very clean and well kept. Nice, clean bathrooms, showers and laundry (husband said the men’s facilities were not so nice). Beautiful pool area. Although it was short, we enjoyed our time there and would recommend it.

    Eric & Jay’s RV Resort

    Stay away from here

With nearly 20 years in asset management overseeing multi-million-dollar properties, I can confidently say this situation reflects a serious operational failure. The park manager, Tina, removed us from the system and reassigned our PAID and ACTIVE RV site while we were temporarily away at the Houston Rodeo trail ride. Her explanation? An email was allegedly sent, and because there was no reply, she assumed we had moved out. Silence is not confirmation. In professional property management, an unanswered email does not justify removing paying guests from occupancy records. You verify departure. You call. You document confirmation. You do not displace active guests based on assumption. We check our email regularly. There was no email. Even if there had been, failure to respond does not authorize forfeiture of a paid site. We returned to find ourselves displaced. The most concerning part was the lack of accountability. Instead of acknowledging a management error, the justification was treated as sufficient. When occupancy control is this loose, it raises serious concerns about operational standards and guest security. We will not return.

    Beach camping

    Clean and well maintained beach.

Great beach camping. From the east edge of Surfside Beach city limits up the coast about 6-7 miles is all open beach with Great hard pack for driving any vehicle on. Free. 14 day limit. Trash cans at each beach entrance. Please help keep the beach clean and free. Parks & Rec teams do a fantastic job of keeping the beach clean and maintained. They drove by several times each day. I was here for 2 weeks in February. Good verizon signal. No skeeters until the last few days when it got into the upper 70s and was very humid.

    Convenient to Visit Galveston!

This was a great spot. Our site was level and easy to get set up. It was off season so the office was closed early when we arrived but they did call us to let us know and it all was pretty smooth. Power, water, sewer great just as expected no surprises or problems. We loved our spot and the proximity to the beach do sunrises and walks to the Seawall. So many options for dining and we did love visiting Galveston.
We went to Seawall Church, the Farmers Market, Kite Shop and enjoyed Happy Hour watching the cruise ships pass by.
The Sandpiper has nice laundry room and community room. And a very nice pool, but it was too cold to enjoy. We would def stay again!

    Galveston Island State Park Campground

Very large RV Pads, short walk to sunrise!

The pad had 50 Amp and Water, there is a dump station as you come in or leave. The pictures on their website don’t show how large and nicely paved the area is. The table is under a large covering and you have plenty of space to enjoy the ocean breeze!
The beach is very nice and quiet (in February) and we enjoyed wonderful sunrises and walking/beach combing. There were a few mosquitos at dusk…but the seems to disappear. The walkway to beach is very smooth and accessible. There are other RV parks in the area that you have to cross the road to get to the beach, we appreciated that it was on the beach! Bath houses were nice. Seemed pretty well kept and recently built. (A couple years maybe?)

Great location but choose your site carefully

We wanted to be close to the city so we could cycle around the sights of Galveston. The cheaper sites are actually on the street, with no fence around them and it was very noisy. We were able to move to a different site though which was great. The bathrooms were clean and well appointed. Happy to recommend a stay here but just be aware of the noise on the street.

    Follett’s Island Beach

    Very peaceful, primitive camping!

We stayed for 6 nights. Don’t be intimidated by staying on the beach! As others have suggested, the sand is packed more like dirt on this beach, which made it very comfortable to drive in. Our truck and trailer were safe throughout the week. We lucked out with good weather.

Things to note: there are trash cans right near the entrance of the beach only. No water near the beach, but if you drive to San Luis Pass County Park, ask the parks staff you’re staying on the beach and hopefully they’ll let you fill up (they let us!). Otherwise, gas stations nearby are good options. This was something that may be obvious to many, but we were very surprised by the moisture on this beach. Everything was totally soaked by dusk each day, and remained wet through night due to dew/ humidity. Recommend a car/rig self-wash right as you leave at TJ’s in Clute/Freeport. As others have noted, just watch the tide predictions, and you should be good. The tide never reached us, not even close.

During the weekdays, we were sometimes the only folks we could see anywhere on the beach, which was cool. It felt nice when other campers showed up at night, tho. They mostly kept a nice distance, so it felt nice and private. It was very often patrolled by parks staff. Highly recommend if you have off-grid power capabilities and don’t mind the humidity. Enjoy!

    Northlake RV Resort

Great campground for an extended stay

Stayed one week during the Freeze of Winter 2026! They communicated via email very well on the status of water. The facilities are very nice! The spots are tightly spaced together but there's plenty of room still to spread out.

Guide to Fresno

Camping near Fresno, Texas offers ready access to outdoor recreation options within the Gulf Coast Plains region. The subtropical climate features summer temperatures often exceeding 90°F with humidity levels above 75% during peak season. Most camping areas sit at elevations below 100 feet, creating minimal terrain challenges for site access and setup.

What to do

Wildlife viewing at nearby parks: Brazos Bend State Park Campground features extensive alligator populations accessible via well-maintained trails. "Brazos Bend is know as the Alligator Park…and for good reason! Of you go on a moderate temperature day (this is the key. If it is too hot or cold you won't see Gators) you can see literally dozens of massive alligators," notes visitor Ashley C.

Astronomy programs: The George Observatory at Brazos Bend State Park Campground offers regular weekend stargazing opportunities. "The best part of this park is the observatory, which has special events and regular weekend hours pretty much all year. It's absolutely worth staying up late for this!" says Kim B.

Hiking and biking trails: Most camps provide access to paved paths suitable for recreational use. "The hiking and bike paths are aplenty. We loved seeing the gators, especially when the babies were hatching," reports Candy P. from Brazos Bend, who photographed numerous baby alligators during her visit.

What campers like

Well-maintained facilities: Campers frequently mention the cleanliness of bathrooms and common areas. "This is an excellent campground. In my opinion, the camper pads are really nice. Long and wide can accommodate small or large campers and motorhomes. The bathrooms and showers are really clean," notes Red S. about Brazos Bend State Park Campground.

Medical center access: Several campgrounds cater to visitors receiving treatment at Houston-area hospitals. "We plan to stay here during my visits to MD Anderson for cancer treatment," mentions Pam S. about Houston Med Center KOA Holiday. Multiple locations provide shuttle services to medical facilities.

Security features: Gated entrances and on-site security personnel enhance safety at multiple locations. "The area is relatively safe. There is a police officer or two, and a police dog, that live at the RV Park," reports a camper about one nearby facility. Highway 6 RV Resort visitor Ben W. notes, "The entire park is fenced. There is a locked gate at the entrance. Residents have a code to open the gate."

What you should know

Highway noise considerations: Many campsites in the region sit near major traffic corridors, creating ambient noise. "It is directly off of the highway so don't except quite," advises Whitney V. about Lakeview RV Resort, though she still recommends the location.

Reservations essential: Weekend stays typically require advance booking, particularly during cooler months. "The park is clean, but the sites are tight. The further you get to the front the louder the traffic noise is, but the sites are larger and spaced out more," notes Shelly W. about site selection strategy.

Variable site sizes: Site dimensions vary significantly even within the same campground. "The back in spots are a little tight so if you're not great at backing in just get a pull through," recommends J M. from Southlake RV Resort, highlighting the importance of reservation specifics.

Tips for camping with families

Observatory access for kids: The astronomy facilities provide educational opportunities. "Hikes and wildlife are good too, lots of easy trails along water for the kids, cool ponds, great little observation tour to climb," says Kim B. about family-friendly activities at Brazos Bend.

Pool availability: Many campgrounds maintain swimming facilities for summer cooling options. "The pool was so fancy and the water was lukewarm from the warm son so night swims were the best. They have adult pool hours from 8pm-10pm," reports Marie B. about Highway 6 RV Resort.

Park access: Several campgrounds connect directly to public recreation areas. "Across the street is a county park with asphalt walking/running/biking paths around the large lake," notes Ben W., highlighting additional recreation space for active children.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many campers report uneven concrete pads requiring additional equipment. "This is a brand new park, yet some of the concrete slabs are unlevel. Perhaps the most unlevel that we've experienced in our travels," reports Kristin S. about Eric & Jay's RV Resort.

City access options: Public transportation connects some camping locations to downtown Houston attractions. "There is a bus stop near the entrance to this RV Park that will take you a mile or so away to the Red Line Rail, which takes you downtown," explains David B. from South Main RV Park, noting the campground's proximity to downtown Houston.

Extended stay amenities: RVers staying multiple weeks benefit from facilities beyond typical campground offerings. "I made good use of the showers and bathrooms that were always clean. I also used the recreation room that had a pool table, shuffle board table and large television," notes Highway 6 RV Resort long-term resident Ben W.
