    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Ray Roberts Lake State Park is the primary horse-friendly campground near Duncanville, Texas. The park features horse corrals for overnight equestrian camping, making it an accessible option for riders wanting to explore the area with their horses. The campground accommodates tents and RVs with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections. Campsite amenities include picnic tables, fire rings, and access to shower facilities. Fires are permitted within designated fire rings, and pets are allowed throughout the campground area when properly leashed. The park maintains clean facilities despite occasional heavy use during peak seasons. Reservations are recommended, especially during weekends and holidays when equestrian sites fill quickly.

The equestrian trails at Ray Roberts Lake provide access to varied terrain suitable for both novice and experienced riders. Trail systems connect to the main camping areas, allowing for convenient riding directly from corrals without needing to trailer horses to trailheads. Water access points for horses are available along designated routes. Riders should note that some trails may become muddy after rainfall, potentially limiting access to certain sections. The park requires proof of current Coggins test for all horses, and weed-free hay is recommended to prevent introducing invasive species. Trail maps are available at the entrance station and visitor center, showing both short loop options and longer routes for full-day excursions. Wildlife sightings are common along the trails, including deer and various bird species.

Isle du Bois Campsites — Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Bring your horse to Isle du Bois unit - Roberts Lake State Park

Roberts Lake State Park has two main campgrounds, the Isle du Bois unit and Johnson unit. These are what I would call twins. They are very similar in layout, scenery and activities. They are on opposite sides of the lake.

Isle du Bois is a little different in that it has legitimate equestrian camp sites with horse pens built into each site. The park has several equestrian trails and is perfect if you like to ride and camp with your horse.

The rest of the park has several walk-in camp sites and then a section for campers and RV's. It is a good park and I would normally rate this park as a three but I think that all of the equestrian activities and amenities for horses moves it up to a four.

      Just far enough

This place is just far enough from DFW to not be to far. Great place to camp, fish and hike. Bring your horses for a equestrian trail as well. Great beach for some sand castles and swimming. And don't forget to hit the Dam store and get the dam special. Good burgers there.

      Holiday Park Campground

      Surprising Off-Highway Park

I chose this campground for its proximity to Fort Worth, and the lake. Just far enough off the highway to diminish all noise, surrounded by hiking trails, is the well maintained Holiday Park. Offering both water and electric hookups for RVs, some with a cabin included, alongside standard campsites right at the lake shore. Bathrooms are simple, fully functional, and never too far from any site. Sites are all a good size and not too close to neighbors. Nature/Horse trails line the park, and it's fairly quiet. There's some occasional aircraft noise, but no noise from the highway. The ranger station is well staffed and by the book, all the sites are visibly well maintained, cleaned regularly.

      Brockdale Park

      Not a campsite

Equestrian trail and boat launch. This is big parking lot for a boat launch on Lake Lavon and a large Equestrian trail. No camping sites but we have done a picnic here. It’s a few minutes from our home.

      Great for something close by

Nothing to knock you socks off, but it’s a great campsite close to home and nice for a quick getaway. Has the feel of being somewhat remote since it’s out by the lake.

We’ve camped in the site with the horse stables and put the tents with questionable rain flys in the horse stable.

Isle du Bois Campsites — Ray Roberts Lake State Park

      Free Fishing!

The first thing that brought me here was the option to fish without a license! It's been several years now since my wife and I stayed here the first time. It's a good size park with several options for activities: boating, fishing, picnicking, equestrian, hiking, camping, etc. The trails are thorough through the park. The lakefront is great as it gives you a good sense of the size of the lake. I'm looking forward to our next stay here!

      East Fork Park Campground

      Not a favorite

I found this park to be maintained poorly. The sites are close together with little shade and are all in a big, level circle with limited to no view of the lake itself. When we were there the grass was at least a foot high, creating no play space for the kids in the ample open areas.  There is an area with equestrian sites. Overall, it seems more of a day-use, non-appealing area.

Isle du Bois Campsites — Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Isle Du Bois (Lake Ray Roberts State Park)

In the hot month of July 2020 I loaded up Little Red and headed out to spend several days camping at the Isle Du Bois Unit of Ray Roberts Lake. Located north of the greater DFW Metroplex Isle Du Bois is one of the busiest Texas State Parks in North Texas. Ray Roberts Lake is situated in the Cross Timbers region of Texas as a result there are plenty of big oak trees to provide shade and there is an abundance of wildlife as well. The Isle Du Bois unit features well over 2 miles of concrete hike and bike trails as well as one of the nicest beaches found in North Texas. Isle Du Bois State Park on Ray Roberts Lake is an excellent place to catch a whole lot of fish! A five lane boat ramp means there is very little wait time to launch and recover. No boat? No worries! Isle Du Bois features an excellent fishing pier and plenty of easy to access bank. Come along with me as I explore the Isle Du Bois Unit of Ray Roberts Lake State Park!

      Cedar Hill State Park Campground

One of my least favorite Texas State Parks To DAte

St Patrick’s Day 2018 we head out to Cedar Hill State Park on the banks of Joe Pool Lake. Cedar Hill State Park is one big Texas State Park! With over 300 campsites you are sure to find one to your liking! A visit to the historical Penn Farm, heavy spring rains and lots of paved roads for scooting make this visit to Cedar Hill State Park a truly unique Texas State Park Visit for the Dude RV crew!

There are 5 camping loops in this park! If you are wanting a lakeside campsite there are many options. The 3 loops on the north end of the park are close to the very busy road so there is road noise all the time.

The Penn FArm exhibit is very cool for the whole family and is ADA compliant but a bit on the rough side for handicap scooters.

The day use area was in need of some work on my visit but I think the day use area has since been rebuilt.

You can see the several videos of my visit on my YouTube...DudeRV

    Guide to Duncanville

Cedar Hill State Park Campground offers multiple camping options near Duncanville, Texas, located just 10 miles away. The park features both RV and tent sites with varied amenities across different camping loops. Most sites include water and electric hookups, with some areas providing more shade than others, while the lake provides additional recreational opportunities throughout the year.

    What to do

Hiking trails for all levels: Cedar Hill State Park has a well-developed trail system suitable for day hikes. "Large park with a variety of campsites. Shaded areas available. Very clean," notes Karen B. about the Cedar Hill State Park Campground.

Lake activities year-round: Joe Pool Lake at Loyd Park provides opportunities for swimming, fishing and boating. "We stayed in site 115 great spot close to the water," shares Tammie L. from Loyd Park. The park maintains a swimming beach area that's popular during summer months.

Horse trails near Pilot Point: For equestrian camping beyond Ray Roberts, consider Isle du Bois which offers additional trail riding options. "Trail systems connect to the main camping areas, allowing for convenient riding directly from corrals without needing to trailer horses," according to Christopher L. from Isle du Bois Campsites, who adds that "Wildlife were very quiet and the stars were bright on a clear night."

    What campers like

Spacious sites with privacy: Many campgrounds near Duncanville offer well-separated sites. "The park is designed with small loops for 15-20 camp sites in each loop. Very little traffic right by the individual spots," reports Michael C. about Cedar Hill State Park Campground.

Waterfront camping views: Highview Park on Lake Bardwell provides lakeside sites with unobstructed water views. "Good experience. Near Ennis, TX. Convenience stores, etc 4-6 miles away. Covered picnic table. Large combined family (private) restroom / shower," writes David S. about Highview Park.

Clean, accessible facilities: Campgrounds maintain usable amenities even during busy periods. "Man, this would have been a great little camp ground if the grass wasn't so overgrown. The bathrooms were clean and campsites were spacious. Pretty view of the lake," notes Jenny S. from East Fork Park Campground.

    What you should know

Gate closing times enforced: Several parks in the area strictly enforce entry hours. "Gates lock at 10 pm. If you're looking for a late night stop, this isn't it," warns Reagan K. from Highview Park.

Weather impacts: Heavy rains can affect site conditions at some parks. "Our only complaint on this site is when it rains, water pours into site and erodes area quickly and will fill your mat etc with orange clay," explains TJ & Laura S. from Loyd Park.

Wildlife encounters: Prepare for potential insect issues in warmer months. "Nice lake but there were fire ants and chiggers all over our campsite!" warns Jill C. about Cedar Hill State Park Campground.

Reservation requirements: Most equestrian campgrounds near Duncanville, Texas fill quickly during peak seasons. "Busy State Park. I've been coming to this state park for over 20 years. It's very well kept, you see deer every trip, it's just very very busy," reports Kerry C. about Isle du Bois Campsites.

    Tips for camping with families

Choose sites near playgrounds: Loyd Park offers family-oriented amenities close to camping areas. "Beach area and playgrounds are great, although you do have quite a few 'day users.' The park also has a boat ramp," mentions Randy H.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many parks offer chances to see native animals. "We have done a lot of Primitive camping here that requires only a half mile walk from the parking lot. We have car camped on a few occasions here and each time we saw plenty of deer around camp," shares Matt S. from Isle du Bois Campsites.

Access to swimming areas: Several parks maintain designated swimming zones for safer water play. "Swimming for the whole family. Clean lake, no broken glass, mowed grass," reports Elizabeth C. from COE Bardwell Lake Mott Park.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for big rigs: Some parks offer more suitable sites for larger vehicles. "Five Star Park located just minutes from Dallas Fort Worth. The Park is extremely clean. Campsites are all level and great for the Big Rigs," advises Debbie T. about Loyd Park.

Full hookup availability: Northside RV Resort provides complete services for extended stays. "Nice hard sites all with 20/30/50a, cable TV, and full hookups," notes Tex B. from Northside RV Resort. They continue, "The people are very friendly and responsive."

Road conditions vary: Check campground road conditions before arrival. "The CG roads are paved, but narrow and a little winding in places. The sites themselves all seemed mostly level," reports Ray & Terri F. about Holiday Park Campground.
