Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Cooper, TX

Cooper Lake State Park campgrounds accommodate pets at both Doctors Creek and South Sulphur units, with maintained hiking trails where leashed dogs can explore alongside their owners. All camping areas including Liberty Grove, Bright Star, Deer Haven, and Oak Grove allow pets on-site with standard leash requirements. Concrete RV pads with water and electric hookups provide convenient setups for campers traveling with animals, while screened shelters and cabins in the Pecan Ridge area also accept pets. Park regulations require pets to be supervised at all times to protect local wildlife, and most sites feature covered picnic tables for shade during hot weather. Sites are typically well-spaced with shade from large oak trees, creating natural privacy barriers and protection from Texas sun for pets.

The lakefront camping areas provide water access where pets can cool off, though owners should be aware of occasional wildlife encounters including raccoons that have approached campsites at night. Hiking paths throughout the park range from short nature trails to longer routes with lake views, all accessible for leashed dogs. The nearby town of Sulphur Springs offers veterinary services approximately 10-15 miles from most campgrounds, along with pet supply options for any forgotten essentials. Both camping units provide clean shower facilities and restrooms for human comfort after outdoor activities with pets. Trash disposal is available at designated stations, and campers report that swimming areas and fishing spots are easily accessible with pets. The park maintains reasonable quiet hours, generally enforced by rangers who regularly patrol camping areas.

    Shady Lake RV Park

    Overnight Stop

This park is close to highway and great for overnight stay. The park has pull through full site hookups. The park has a pond that is the center of the entire campground. The park has two dog parks available as well for those traveling with pets.

    Two things I loved:

    1. Close to highway quick stay
    2. The pond nice view with ducklings

One thing I didn’t love: Really close to others for extended stays.

    Patriot RV Park

    Comfortable stay

Stayed for two months for my husband's work. Park manager, Becky, was helpful and nice. They have a saltwater pool, dog park, laundry room, shower/bathrooms, trees/landscaping and access to a boat ramp. Some sites are a bit tight. We were in the top part of the campground and had no issues with it being real wet. Have heard that the lower area does have pooling of water with heavy rain. It does go away quickly, but should be aware of this if you have lots of outside things or a pet. Would stay here again.

    Ramblin Fever RV Park

    Close to Restaurants and Shopping

I stayed for 4 nights from a Thursday through Monday. The owner is very nice and helped me with choosing a drive thru site. It is well maintained. Mix of long term and short stay resident s. It is near a busy arterial highway so it's not especially quiet. The hookups worked great. I was two spots from the very front of the park. I used Passport America pass for my first 3 nights. I felt safe. It is very pet friendly. Keep dogs on leash and clean up after them. I have 3 black labs. No fenced dog park yet, so I drove them to the city park with tennis courts every morning to run free. I will most likely stay here again. I mostly boondock in the forests, but when I need a place to resupply and take care of business needs, this place is very nice.

Public Ramp 1 Titus County Freshwater Supply District

    Boondock Free for 10 Days

I found this location because I needed a free spot for a few days for a medical appointment. It is within about 5 miles of Mount Pleasant, TX. Not far from Walmart, Home Depot, and other shopping and restaurants. It's primitive boondocking, but pretty nice and clean. Psrk next to the Water. Boating, fishing, BBQ, and group camping is allowed. Pet friendly on leash.

Pat Mayse Sanders Cove Recreations area

    Beautiful lake in the pines.

This is a beautiful, well kept campground. The people that work there are real nice. Its real peacefull. This lake doesn't have a marina so there is not too much boat traffic. There are boat ramps and docks. I plan on taking my kayak next time. It looks great for kayaking. The campsites are spacious. Lots of shade trees. Pets are allowed. It is a quit campground. The campground A & G have vault toilets. The shower house is up near the entrance. I believe that loop C has a shower. Loop A does not have a shower but the main restroom and shower is within walking distance. They give you 1/2 price off if you have an Access Pass. From Paris, TX, take HWY 271 north 12 miles to FM 906 W and follow it 1 mile to CR 35920. Turn left into the park following signs.

    Governor Jim Hogg RV Park

    RV camping

The camping area is mostly occupied by long term RV campers. Many of the campers are employed in the nearby areas. Grounds offer water/electric/sewer hookups, there are also toilets available but no showers. The RV grounds are part of the city park which offers a splash pad (seasonal), large playground, pavilion, picnic areas, arboretum, and a short hiking trail (approximately one third of a mile). The RV sites are backed up by the sheriff's office/county jail the courthouse is down the road, and there is a police department across the street. This isn't to suggest that the area is dangerous, its a small town and everything is pretty much right there. Shopping and restaurants are within walking distance.

Lake Fork, a popular fishing lake is within a ten minute drive. Lake Quitman is less than ten minutes, generally this is where water sport activities occur. Pets are welcome.

    Sleep Under The Pecan Trees

    Wonderful overall experience

Wild, yet docile horses will approach you. You can pet them and feed them by hand. Tall trees and gorgeous campsites. Donkeys hee-hawing, birds singing, and fire flies glowing. Scattered ponds throughout this 100 acre plot. Feel free to explore the nature or just chill at your campsite. Rick Parent, the friendly wolf-rescuing author and musician, will be your contact for your stay. He will have your spot mowed and ready before your arrival. He is kind, welcoming, and such a treat to visit with. There are minimal mosquitoes, so that was certainly a relief. You will be about 12 minutes away from the nearest Walmart, in case you forget some camping supplies. We had to go there to buy more carrots for the horses. (40 pounds of carrots). I highly recommend that everyone go check this place out! Share the energy of this beautiful land and always remember to pack out what you pack in.

Guide to Cooper

Cooper Lake State Park spans nearly 3,000 acres across two separate units in northeast Texas, with multiple campgrounds situated around the 19,000-acre reservoir. The park sits at approximately 440 feet above sea level and experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F between June and September. Winter camping offers milder conditions with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 50-60°F, though occasional freezing temperatures occur overnight.

What to do

Hiking with variety: Coyote Run Trail offers a 4.5-mile route with lake views and wildlife spotting opportunities. "Cooper Lake feels secluded. Lots of trees with a beautiful lake and well maintained hiking trails. It's close enough to the Dallas area to be convenient, but never feels crowded," notes a visitor to Deer Haven Campground.

Fishing from shore or pier: Anglers can catch largemouth bass, crappie and catfish without a boat. "I spent three hot days exploring the DR Creek Unit of Cooper Lake State Park. If you have a boat then you will love the fishing on this lake," reports a camper at Liberty Grove Campground.

Kayaking access: Several campsites offer direct water entry points for paddlers. "You want to get there before the sunset, it's beautiful to see the orange layer over the water. Nothing better than kayaking/paddle boarding or tubing into the sunset," recommends a visitor at Oak Grove Campground.

What campers like

Spacious waterfront sites: Many campsites offer direct lake views and access. "We camped at Oak grove 97 campsite and cannot stress on how beautiful it is to be right by the lake!" reports a visitor to Oak Grove Campground.

Clean facilities: The park maintains well-kept bathhouses and shower buildings. "The bathrooms and showers were nice and clean. The lake was beautiful and clear," states a camper from Liberty Grove Campground.

Privacy between sites: Campground layouts provide good separation between neighbors. "We stayed at spot 18, it was a quick walk to the lake and had the most beautiful wooded view from the campsite. The dump station has 2 spots and very easy to use," notes a visitor to Liberty Grove.

Winter camping benefits: Off-season visits offer solitude and comfortable temperatures. "We were here in early December, so the campground wasn't very busy. We liked our site, pretty spacious with views of the water. The ranger said this loop is the quieter, less busy side of Cooper Lake," shares a camper at Liberty Grove.

What you should know

Wildlife encounters: Prepare for potential animal visitors at night. "When camping here alone at night (no one else was in the tent camping area), my camp site was accosted by a family of raccoons. They were not friendly and not scared of people at all. Be careful if you have young children," warns a visitor to Oak Grove Campground.

Weather considerations: The lake area can experience strong winds and sudden storms. "On this day, the wind off the lake was howling, so I had to park the van and put up a tarp to block it enough to set up the tent," reports a camper from Liberty Grove Campground.

Seasonal closures: Some areas may close temporarily due to natural conditions. "Currently closed due to flooding," noted one visitor regarding Liberty Grove Campground, highlighting the importance of checking current status before visiting.

Trail conditions: Some hiking paths pass near industrial areas. "Very nice park with some great RV spots. If hiking, beware the Coyote Run Trail. A lot of toxic fracking going on in the area," cautions a visitor to Oak Grove Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Multiple play areas provide entertainment for children. "Clean bathrooms, good playground and beach area. Cabins, RV, equestrian and tent sites," notes a visitor to Oak Grove Campground.

Cabin options for comfort: The park offers cabin accommodations with basic amenities for families seeking more protection from the elements. "We 'camp' here in the cabins almost every year for our annual family camping trip of almost 20 people. The cabins are always clean and tidy. They have spacious bathrooms, an open living/dining area, a small kitchen and bedroom," shares a visitor to Pecan Ridge Cabins.

Fishing opportunities for kids: The lake provides accessible fishing spots where children can experience success. "Good park to get away for the weekend with the grandchildren! Sites are shaded with full hookup's! Caught a couple fish with the grandson!" reports a camper at Oak Grove Campground.

Tips from RVers

Level concrete pads: Most RV sites feature stable, even parking surfaces. "The CG roads are paved, as are the sites. The site pads themselves are concrete and most looked to be fairly level, but a few had a bit of slope," notes a visitor to Bright Star Campground.

Dump station availability: The park provides convenient waste disposal facilities. "The dump station has 2 spots and very easy to use," reports a camper at Liberty Grove Campground.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly throughout the dog friendly campgrounds near Cooper. "AT&T coverage was pitiful, with only 1 bar of LTE service and speeds up to 0.1 MB/s," reports an RVer staying at Bright Star Campground.

Shaded sites for summer camping: Many RV sites offer natural cooling from mature trees. "Shady, large sites with electric and water. Large area in the middle of the campground with lovely trees and a few picnic tables," reports a visitor to Buggy Whip Equestrian Campground.
