Established sites like 60 North RV Park, Travelers Paradise, and Riverside Park offer full hookup services for RVs while also accommodating tent campers in many locations. The area features several campgrounds with cabin rentals, including Stonebridge RV Park about 10 miles north of Bay City and Brazoria Lakes RV Resort approximately 25 miles east. Most developed campgrounds provide concrete pads, electric hookups, and water connections, with many offering sewer hookups for extended stays.

Camping in this coastal Texas region requires planning around seasonal weather patterns and occasional flooding, especially at riverfront locations. The Colorado River runs through the area, providing scenic camping opportunities at Riverside Park, which offers both wilderness camping along Hossey Slough and developed sites along the riverbank. Free camping is available at FM 521 River Park, though amenities are limited to basic toilet facilities. Many campgrounds remain open year-round, but Gulf Coast humidity and summer temperatures make spring and fall more comfortable for tent camping. As one camper noted about Riverside Park, "This park is about 7 miles from Bay City and is between the Colorado River and Hossey Slough. The Wilderness loop has a very rustic feel and is beautiful."

Several campgrounds in the Bay City area feature fishing opportunities, including Brazoria Lakes RV Resort with its stocked fishing lake and Riverside Park with river access. Train noise impacts some locations, particularly Travelers Paradise RV Park where trains run on nearby tracks. Most developed RV parks maintain controlled access with gates for security and offer amenities like picnic tables, trash service, and laundry facilities. Hollywood Bottom Park provides primitive camping oriented toward river recreation, with four first-come, first-served sites for overnight stays. A review mentioned, "Free camping geared towards river use. Great rest stop while on the Colorado River. The next access site is 18 miles downstream." Proximity to grocery stores and other services makes Bay City convenient for resupply, with many campers noting the convenience of having Walmart and other stores within a 5-minute drive of certain campgrounds.

    Matagorda Bay Nature Park

    A fisher person’s paradise.

This was an awesome find. Sites are right on the water, with great fishing near by (my son caught a nice trout which was super fun for him). As advertised, this park merges the Colorado River with the bay. The beach was nice, too. Site was level, but as others have noted, there is no shade to speak of. This is the only downside to this park.

Matagorda Bay Nature and RV Park

The campground is nice but the bungalow’s furniture and mattresses are bad

The furniture is out  door furniture even in doors. They are not comfortable at all. U slide off the couch . Never did get the tv to work. The mattresses are the worst I’ve even slept on. My body hurts and is bruised on my hips from laying on the hard mattresses. There is no back support on the chairs of the dining table. The backs of the chairs are short so u can’t lean back in them. They need to redo the furniture because it’s cheap junk. And they made all of them with one bathroom. Six people with one bathroom and they have a bungalow that sleeps eight still with only one bathroom. Also the front door needs a blind because anyone can look in at night .

We stayed here for a week this summer and loved it! The beach is just a short walk away, and my wife and kids really enjoyed our morning walks. Free Wi-Fi was a plus too. Great place! 👍👍👍

Such an amazing and very beautiful place!

    KOA Port Lavaca Matagorda Bay

    Nice small RV Park

Port Lavaca KOA Review Rating: 5 stars.  I recently spent a few days at the Port Lavaca KOA, and overall, it was a great experience with just a couple of minor drawbacks.

    Location and Ambiance:

The KOA is situated in a remote and quiet area, perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The peaceful atmosphere made it easy to relax and unwind. I particularly enjoyed the serene surroundings; it's a fantastic spot for fishing, and I was able to catch some great fish right from the shore and pier.

    Accommodations and Service:

One of the highlights of my stay was the generous upgrade to my site at no extra charge! The staff were friendly and accommodating, which definitely enhanced my experience. I appreciated their willingness to go the extra mile to ensure I had a pleasant stay.

    Fishing:

If you're into fishing, this spot is a dream! The waters are teeming with fish, and I spent several enjoyable hours casting lines and reeling in my catches. It was great to have such easy access to fishing right from the campground. As a bonus a pod of dolphins visited the site in the evening adding to the atmosphere.

    Drawbacks:

The only issues I encountered were related to the journey and the campsite itself. The road leading to the KOA was a bit rough in places, which can be a concern if you’re towing a trailer or driving a low-clearance vehicle. At the time the roads were being worked on, so maybe its better now.  Additionally, the sites along the water can feel a bit tight, making it difficult for larger RVs to maneuver comfortably. If you're planning to stay in one of these spots, be prepared for a close quarters experience. On the plus side I made friends with the neighbors easily.  Also I did choose to take the upgrade from a much bigger site, just to have the water in your back yard.

    Final Thoughts:

Despite the minor inconveniences, I would recommend the Port Lavaca KOA to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway with excellent fishing opportunities. The friendly service and beautiful surroundings more than make up for the rough road. I left feeling refreshed and eager to plan my next visit!

    Brazos Bend State Park Campground

    Excellent campground.

This is an excellent campground. In my opinion, the camper pads are really nice. Long and wide can accommodate small or large campers and motorhomes. They are fire rings picnic tables. There's firewood for sale, lots of wildlife sightings. I got 5G network with T-MOBILE service and excellent television reception. The bathrooms and showers are really clean.

    Brazos Bend State Park Campground

    April Camping

Staying here as a pass through for a few nights. VERY clean campground. Very happy with the tidiness and keep up of it. The staff were great at check in. Sites are far enough away that you have privacy. Nice bathrooms and playground area. My dogs have enjoyed walking the big loops. Have also seen lots of alligators, as advertised, which has been pretty cool! Only downfall is the mosquitos, which isn’t the campgrounds fault. Just with the heat and swamps/lakes they are particularly bad. Large clean sites with water and electricity. My starlink is a little spotty with the trees but am still able to work remote with no major issues.

Guide to Bay City

Bay City Texas camping options span from riverfront sites to lakeside destinations within a 25-mile radius. Campers can expect high humidity throughout the year, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F. The flat coastal terrain means some campgrounds face periodic flooding after heavy rains, especially at sites near the Colorado River and Hossey Slough.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Brazoria Lakes RV Resort offers a stocked fishing lake where campers can fish without leaving the property. One visitor noted, "Beautiful resort! Stocked fishing lake, swimming pool, game room, gym. Beautiful outdoor kitchens w/tv's."

Wildlife watching: Brazos Bend State Park Campground, about 35 miles northeast of Bay City, provides exceptional alligator viewing opportunities. A camper shared, "If you want to see alligators in their natural habitat this is the park for you. There were so many. We even came across one on the trail eating a snake."

Stargazing: The observatory at Brazos Bend State Park Campground makes it a destination for astronomy enthusiasts. A reviewer explained, "The best part though is the observatory. There's always plenty of stargazers up there that love to share their equipment, you can also pay for the big telescopes."

River access: FM 521 River Park provides free access to the Colorado River. A visitor commented, "Arrived, Beautiful place. A few other ppl here. Boat launch, Porta potties. Besides the highway being so close, it's really nice. Can't complain...it's freeeee!"

What campers like

Well-maintained facilities: Many campers appreciate the upkeep at Riverside Park, with one noting, "The bathrooms are older, but spacious and clean."

Convenience to supplies: Travelers Paradise RV Park offers easy access to shopping. A camper mentioned, "Good price, $375 a month+ electric, concrete spots, plenty of shade, wind blocks, very good location grocery store, hardware store and anything you need Walmart, heb and food less then 5 min away."

Secure camping: Several Bay City TX camping locations feature security measures. At Travelers Paradise RV Park, a reviewer pointed out it's "gated all the way around, it is clean but there are older trailers around and full time spots but good people."

Resort amenities: Brazoria Lakes RV Resort goes beyond basic camping with additional features. A camper praised, "On-site washers and dryers, a pool, dog wash, pond, golf carts, free air for your tires, and gates for your security."

What you should know

Train noise: Some campgrounds experience significant railroad disruption. At Travelers Paradise RV Park, one camper warned, "There are train tracks right behind the park and lots of trains running."

Shower conditions vary: Not all facilities meet expectations. At Lighthouse RV Park, a camper reported, "The reason for the low rating is the bathroom and shower. They are in poor condition and dirty to the point of unsanitary."

Water quality concerns: Some locations have water issues. One camper at Lighthouse RV Park observed, "Water from the site hookups was tinged yellow but didn't feel slimy."

Local recreation use: Some camping areas near Bay City cater primarily to river users. At Hollywood Bottom Park, a reviewer explained, "Free camping geared towards river use (raft/kayak/canoe). Great rest stop while on the Colorado River. The next access site is 18 miles downstream."

Tips for camping with families

Choose camping loops wisely: At Riverside Park, different camping areas offer varied experiences. A camper noted, "The Wilderness loop has electricity and water on the Hossey Slough and is accessed on a gravel road and the sites are also gravel. It has a very rustic feel and is beautiful."

Consider the season: Plan your Bay City camping trip around weather patterns. A visitor to Hollywood Bottom Park warned, "Very soft sand and great shell spot. Local kids have made this into a party spot so the authorities can get suspicious of people just camping without river use."

Look for shaded sites: The Texas heat makes shade valuable. At Stonebridge RV Park, a camper highlighted the site features: "Very clean, full hookups, good price, friendly people, fishing pond, food/drink truck, concrete slabs."

Check site size: Some campgrounds have limitations. A camper at Stonebridge RV Park cautioned, "Tight spots, could be harder for longer trailers, not a lot of parking when full."

Tips from RVers

Plan for insect protection: The coastal environment means mosquitoes are prevalent. A camper at Lighthouse RV Park warned, "Lots of mosquitos, too."

Research site layouts: At 60 North RV Park, a visitor appreciated the setup, reporting, "After reaching there I see their ground was green and was also providing free cable but we didn't took that as our goal was to spend time with family. There were more feature like laundry, clean washrooms etc."

Be prepared for rain impacts: The flat terrain can lead to soggy conditions. At Lighthouse RV Park, one RVer noted, "There had been tons of rain. The camper was on a paved pad, but the surrounding areas were very muddy."

Consider noise levels: Some campgrounds offer better sound isolation. A camper at Stonebridge RV Park mentioned it's "close to the interstate and very quiet."
