Lighthouse RV Park features paved pull-through RV pads with full hookups, though spacing between sites can be limited. "The site itself was adequate. Most RV parks in the region provide essential services including sanitary dump stations, showers, and restroom facilities, though quality varies between locations. While Brazoria Lakes RV Resort offers resort-style amenities including a pool, fishing lake, and outdoor kitchens with TVs, other parks like Lighthouse RV Park have received mixed reviews regarding bathroom and shower facilities. Many parks in the area permit pets, though specific restrictions may apply. The coastal location means mosquitoes can be prevalent, especially during warmer months near dusk. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the area, though some waterfront locations may experience spotty coverage. Reservations are recommended, particularly during winter months when seasonal visitors increase occupancy rates. Some parks offer monthly rates for longer stays, with Travelers Paradise RV Park charging approximately $375 per month plus electric according to visitor reports.

      Quintana Beach County Park

      Nice relaxing beach park

We stayed here during the week in April, and the weather was perfect. A nice steady breeze kept the mosquitoes away, which we heard can be pretty bad. They have 30 amp FHU sites as well as 50 amp. Also have nice looking cabins for rent. A short walk over a nice boardwalk to the beach. Also half mile walk to the bird sanctuary, which is awesome for bird lovers. Free wifi, but the connection kept dropping. Great 5G connection with Verizon. Level, concrete pads. We required no leveling. Sites are spacious and patio is surrounded with well mowed grass. Campground is on a ship channel and it was fun watching the huge tankers go by. We really enjoyed this park and will return. No shade, so it would be quite hot in summer.

      Serendipity Bay RV Resort

Peaceful but sites too close together

Very well-maintained and pet-friendly RV park with various amenities such as a pool, fishing pier, and dog park. Sites are very close together with little room to set up outside between RVs. Very little room to park vehicle once RV is in place and limited space to back in. Enjoyed the peaceful sunrises and sunsets and the constant breeze was a plus to keep the humidity and heat down. Take plenty of anti-mosquito repellent, as around mid-morning and late afternoon, the mosquitoes come out in force. A good location for those wishing to fish, but not sightseeing. The town has very few amenities and only a couple of restaurants and small stores.

      Riverside Park

      Great campground for reasonable price

This park is about 7 miles from Bay City and is between the Colorado River and Hossey Slough. There are two camping loops. The Wilderness loop has electricity and water on the Hossey Slough and is accessed on a gravel road and the sites are also gravel. It has a very rustic feel and is beautiful. The only downside is the showers and bathroom are about a quarter mile away at the office. The bathrooms are older, but spacious and clean. The other loop is on the Colorado River and has full hook-ups. The sites are very close together. We were here on a February weekend and there was only one other camper in the Wilderness loop. Would definitely stay here again.

Matagorda Bay Nature and RV Park

      Colorado River Waterfront Camping

      Pros:

      • Quick and friendly check-in

.• Large parking area that is rig-friendly for check-in.

      • Knowledgeable park personnel

      • Nature center with interactive exhibits and gift shop

      • Well maintained. Daily we saw the camp hosts working diligently, even hosing down and scrubbing bird poop from campsites.

      • Saturday morning 1.5 hour guided Gulf beach walk($5/pp) by Paige and Whitley. Paige knew her“stuff” as she was pelted continuously with questions and she never missed a beat!

      • Complimentary early Saturday morning coffee and pastries.

      • Along the Colorado River but you can hear ocean roar where the river meets the Gulf of Mexico.

      • Level concrete parking pad surrounded by grass. Back-ins and drive-thrus.

      • Two sewer hook-up outlets.

      • Large concrete picnic table.

      • Very nice and clean toilets/shower building in an elevated building accessible by a ramp. Must have code to enter.

      • Laundry facility in toilet/shower building with code entry.

      • Nice Colorado River fishing piers with fish cleaning tables with freshwater spigot and a super pier over the beach/ocean.

      • Primo sunsets

      • Bay City, 20-minute drive, for the closest Walmart, HEB and other retailers and restaurants.

      Cons:

      • LCRA $6 on-line reservation fee.

      • Absolutely no trees or vegetation between sites which equals NO SHADE and NO PRIVACY.

      • Ocean“breeze” made it impossible to deploy trailer awning.

      • No fire pits, but if you bring your own with a screen cover, you may have a fire, if you bring wood as no wood is sold at this park.

      • NOT A DARK SKY FRIENDLY CAMPGROUND due to way too many street lights throughout the campground, along the river bank and on the fishing piers.  This would be a 5 star campground if there was more darkness!

      • Complimentary LCRA WIFI was weak and unreliable.

      • When the ocean"breeze" died down and the humidity was up, we were attacked by swarms of mosquitos which required us to heavily apply repellent in mid-February

      • Not much in the town of Matagorda, basically a fishing village, and of those businesses, not many operating in mid-February.

      The Breeze Beachfront Resort

      Small, nice, beachfront !

Very nice place. Only 14 spaces all with concrete pad, picnic table, and full hookups. Very clean and well maintained. Just steps from the beach with an outdoor shower to clean off the sand before you head home. Also a 6(?) room hotel on site. Staff is always available. The company who does the lawn care accidentally cut both my sewer hoses and The Breeze owners had them replaced in 5 minutes!

    Guide to Bay City

The Bay City area of Matagorda County offers diverse camping experiences near the Gulf Coast, where the Colorado River meets the Gulf of Mexico. With mild winter temperatures averaging 60°F and humid summers reaching the 90s, seasonal planning affects comfort. Mosquitoes can be particularly active in coastal camping areas during dawn and dusk, especially after rainfall.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Matagorda Bay Nature Park, campers can fish directly from their sites along the Colorado River. "Fishing right outside your RV. Walk to the beach or there is access to drive on the beach I would advise a 4wheel drivevehicle," notes Ricky B.

Beach activities: The Gulf beaches are within walking distance of several campgrounds. At Jetty Park, "Close to the beach which made it easy to take a break to allow my toddler to take a nap," mentions Karissa D. The public beach is approximately 5 miles from some camping areas.

Nature exploration: Wildlife viewing and beach combing are popular activities. "Saturday morning 1.5 hour guided Gulf beach walk($5/pp) by Paige and Whitley. Paige knew her stuff as she was pelted continuously with questions and she never missed a beat!" shares one camper about Matagorda Bay Nature Park.

Mini golf: Some campgrounds offer additional recreation options. Crystal E. mentions that Jetty Park has "mini golf and 5 minute walk to beach," making it convenient for families wanting varied activities.

    What campers like

Waterfront views: Campsites along the Colorado River provide scenic vistas. "The view to drink coffee to in the morning was priceless," writes Leticia M. about her stay at Jetty Park.

Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer concrete pads with full hookups. Dan D. notes about Jetty Park, "I set my tent up in the grass and enjoyed a beautiful sunset over the water." Some parks feature oversized concrete pads with picnic tables.

Fishing piers: Several rv parks near Bay City provide fishing access. Napunani mentions "Nice Colorado River fishing piers with fish cleaning tables with freshwater spigot and a super pier over the beach/ocean" at Matagorda Bay Nature Park.

Recreational facilities: Brazoria Lakes RV Resort offers "Stocked fishing lake, swimming pool, game room, gym. Beautiful outdoor kitchens w/tv's," according to Rachel L.

    What you should know

Limited shade: Most coastal campgrounds lack tree cover. "There is absolutely no shade at all but other than that it's a beautiful little spot," notes Dan D. about Jetty Park. This makes summer camping challenging without additional shade structures.

Mosquito preparation: Insects can be intense, especially in certain seasons. Debbie J. shares, "Thank goodness we had our Clam screenroom with us, because the mosquitos got really bad at times" at Jetty Park.

Site spacing: At Serendipity Bay RV Resort, Jon L. warns that "Sites are very close together with little room to set up outside between RVs. Very little room to park vehicle once RV is in place and limited space to back in."

Shower facilities: Quality varies significantly between parks. Liz P. reported about Lighthouse RV Park, "They are in poor condition and dirty to the point of unsanitary. For $35 a night we expect showers that are useable."

Limited services: Many campgrounds are located in small communities with few amenities. "No grocery stores in Matagorda but there is a Dollar General store," notes one camper, while another mentions "Bay City, 20-minute drive, for the closest Walmart, HEB and other retailers and restaurants."

    Tips for camping with families

Beach proximity: Choose sites that allow quick returns to camp. "My family and I really enjoyed this park. Every lot has a concrete slab as well as a picnic table area! They don't have a grille area that we saw but there are some at the pavilion," shares Karissa D. about Jetty Park.

Educational opportunities: Some parks offer nature centers with interactive exhibits. Joel B. describes Jetty Park as a "Clean park with nice amenities. Great location. Easy beach access."

Packing essentials: Thorns and prickly plants can be problematic for pets and children. "There are a lot of prickly thorns, so need to be careful walking dogs, as they tend to pick up thorns easily," warns Debbie J.

Weather planning: The area's wind conditions can affect comfort. "Brisk ocean breezes made it impossible to deploy our trailer awning," notes a camper at Matagorda Bay Nature Park.

    Tips from RVers

Monthly rates: For extended stays, Travelers Paradise RV Park offers reasonable pricing. Matt B. reports, "Good price, $375 a month+ electric, concrete spots, plenty of shade, wind blocks, very good location."

Accessibility: Most Bay City RV parks accommodate larger rigs. "Park roadways good condition with no speed bumps and easy to maneuver," notes Napunani about Matagorda Bay Nature Park.

Utility connections: Some sites have dual sewer hookups for convenience. "Some sites have two sewer connections," mentions a camper, which provides flexibility in RV positioning.

Reservation timing: Booking well in advance is essential for waterfront spots. "If you book early enough you can reserve a lot right on the water wish is awesome!" recommends Karissa D.
