Best Campgrounds near Bellaire, TX

Camping options around Bellaire, Texas primarily consist of RV resorts and developed campgrounds within the greater Houston metropolitan area. The Houston Med Center KOA Holiday and Lakeview RV Resort provide convenient urban camping experiences with full hookups and amenities. For those seeking more natural surroundings, Brazos Bend State Park Campground, located about 45 minutes southwest of Bellaire, offers tent camping, RV sites, cabins, and screened shelters amid wildlife-rich landscapes known for alligator viewing opportunities. Most facilities within 30 minutes of Bellaire cater predominantly to RV travelers with concrete pads, electricity, and water hookups.

Reservations are essential for most campgrounds in the region, particularly during cooler months from October through April when temperatures are more moderate. Summer camping presents significant challenges with intense heat, humidity, and mosquitoes. As one camper noted about Stephen F. Austin State Park, "Going to this camp in the middle of August is not recommended because, wow Texas heat." Many RV resorts offer swimming pools and air-conditioned facilities to combat the heat. Security is a consideration at urban campgrounds, with many featuring gated access. Highway 6 RV Resort exemplifies this with "a locked gate at the entrance where residents have a code to open the gate or a remote gate opener."

Wildlife viewing opportunities vary significantly between urban and state park campgrounds. Brazos Bend State Park receives consistent praise for its natural attractions, with one visitor reporting, "We saw around 15 alligators while hiking, and these are animals in the wild in their habitat." The park also features a nature center, hiking trails, and fishing opportunities. Urban RV parks typically offer amenities focused on comfort rather than nature experiences, including pools, recreation rooms, and exercise facilities. Campers frequently mention the convenience of these locations for accessing medical facilities, shopping, and Houston attractions. Most RV resorts maintain year-round operations, while optimal camping seasons at state parks are late fall through early spring when temperatures are more comfortable and insect activity is reduced.

    Galveston Island State Park Campground

Very large RV Pads, short walk to sunrise!

The pad had 50 Amp and Water, there is a dump station as you come in or leave. The pictures on their website don’t show how large and nicely paved the area is. The table is under a large covering and you have plenty of space to enjoy the ocean breeze!
The beach is very nice and quiet (in February) and we enjoyed wonderful sunrises and walking/beach combing. There were a few mosquitos at dusk…but the seems to disappear. The walkway to beach is very smooth and accessible. There are other RV parks in the area that you have to cross the road to get to the beach, we appreciated that it was on the beach! Bath houses were nice. Seemed pretty well kept and recently built. (A couple years maybe?)

    Follett’s Island Beach

    Very peaceful, primitive camping!

We stayed for 6 nights. Don’t be intimidated by staying on the beach! As others have suggested, the sand is packed more like dirt on this beach, which made it very comfortable to drive in. Our truck and trailer were safe throughout the week. We lucked out with good weather.

Things to note: there are trash cans right near the entrance of the beach only. No water near the beach, but if you drive to San Luis Pass County Park, ask the parks staff you’re staying on the beach and hopefully they’ll let you fill up (they let us!). Otherwise, gas stations nearby are good options. This was something that may be obvious to many, but we were very surprised by the moisture on this beach. Everything was totally soaked by dusk each day, and remained wet through night due to dew/ humidity. Recommend a car/rig self-wash right as you leave at TJ’s in Clute/Freeport. As others have noted, just watch the tide predictions, and you should be good. The tide never reached us, not even close.

During the weekdays, we were sometimes the only folks we could see anywhere on the beach, which was cool. It felt nice when other campers showed up at night, tho. They mostly kept a nice distance, so it felt nice and private. It was very often patrolled by parks staff. Highly recommend if you have off-grid power capabilities and don’t mind the humidity. Enjoy!

    Northlake RV Resort

Great campground for an extended stay

Stayed one week during the Freeze of Winter 2026! They communicated via email very well on the status of water. The facilities are very nice! The spots are tightly spaced together but there's plenty of room still to spread out.

    7 Bridges Luxury RV Resort

    Great amenities

For the most part, we love it here. There are two big fishing ponds, some beautiful bridges and walkways. There’s some swings adult swings out by the pond. There’s a pool a Jacuzzi. Our favorite part is feeding the fish. There is food down there to feed the catfish in the ponds and we love to do that that is makes our visit so much nicer here. I love the outdoors and I love wild animals and so I’m very comfortable. We’ve only met one of our neighbors. He seems to be nice enough. The ladies in the front are excellent. They have helped us and they have been very helpful and we don’t have many complaints. The only thing we could complain about is the Internet, but the price is great and the park is nice.

    Nice!!!!!

Its clean, beautiful and peaceful. Also, I went to a local retailer to purchase a parking pass and apparently a parking pass is not required during the off season. So that was nice.

Guide to Bellaire

Camping spots near Bellaire, Texas range from urban RV sites to more natural settings along Houston's outskirts. Within a 45-minute drive, temperatures regularly exceed 90°F between May and September, with high humidity creating challenging camping conditions. Winter offers more moderate camping weather with daytime temperatures typically in the 60s and 70s.

What to do

Explore observatory events: At Brazos Bend State Park Campground, the observatory hosts special events and regular weekend hours throughout the year. "The observatory is amazing on clear nights," notes camper Joseph P. The astronomy enthusiasts are known for sharing their knowledge and equipment with visitors.

Wildlife photography: Brazos Bend State Park provides excellent opportunities for wildlife photography, particularly alligators in their natural habitat. A recent visitor reported, "We saw gators at the nature center. Cool." The park's diverse ecosystem makes it ideal for capturing images of native Texas wildlife throughout the seasons.

Visit city attractions: Houston Med Center KOA Holiday serves as a convenient base for exploring Houston's museums and downtown. "From what I could see, this is a nice park practically in the middle of a freeway. No kidding, it's barely off of the off ramp," notes one camper. The location allows for easy access to urban attractions while providing a camping home base.

What campers like

Clean, modern facilities: Lakeview RV Resort receives consistent praise for its well-maintained amenities. "We were at a PT FHU right up front by the gate with a little plot of grass and nice metal picnic table," shares Jenifer K. The resort's gym and pool are particularly popular with campers seeking comfort during their stay.

Medical center access: Several campgrounds cater specifically to those visiting Houston medical facilities. A visitor to Lakeview RV Resort noted, "A shuttle ran between the park and MD Anderson which made it very convenient for us." This service is especially valuable for those combining medical appointments with camping stays.

Well-lit, secure environments: Highway 6 RV Resort provides security features that campers appreciate. "The entire park is fenced. There is a locked gate at the entrance. Residents have a code to open the gate or a remote gate opener can be used if a deposit is paid for the device," explains Ben W. This security aspect provides peace of mind in the urban setting.

What you should know

Flooding concerns: Houston's low elevation makes some campgrounds vulnerable to flooding during heavy rains. Check weather forecasts and campground conditions before arrival, especially during hurricane season from June through November.

Concrete pads standard: Most RV sites in the Bellaire area feature concrete pads rather than natural surfaces. At AllStar RV Resort, "We stayed in the newer part of the campground which has only cement pads & gravel for each site. Super easy to park as all are pull through," reports Susan T.

Traffic noise varies: Proximity to highways means noise levels differ significantly between campgrounds and even within the same facility. "The front and the back of the RV Park seem to be two different experiences. We were in site 223 in the back, by the city park, and we could barely hear any vehicle noise," explains one camper about their stay at a Houston RV resort.

Tips for camping with families

Utilize park connections: Several RV parks connect directly to public recreation areas. "You can walk right out of the RV Park to the city park through a gate in the back corner. The city park has a 2 mile and 6+ mile walking path," notes a camper, creating expanded recreation options beyond the campground itself.

Weekend market activities: Traders Village RV Park offers unique weekend entertainment options. "Perfect with families with kids to wake up and go shopping and cheap all day pass rides!! This place is a Must go!!!" enthuses Roxanne G. The adjacent market provides built-in entertainment without additional travel.

Supervised alligator viewing: Brazos Bend State Park offers safe wildlife viewing opportunities with proper precautions. "This is the best place to escape from the big city and enjoy nature! There is so much to do. The hiking and bike paths are aplenty. We loved seeing the gators, especially when the babies were hatching," shares a visitor.

Tips from RVers

Access considerations: Many Houston area RV parks have challenging entrances that require careful navigation. "It's tight getting into the RV Resort from the main road. You do not want traffic on your butt when you are trying to make the turn in from the road," warns a camper about access issues.

Public transportation options: South Main RV Park provides convenient access to Houston's public transit system. "There is a bus stop near the entrance to this RV Park that will take you a mile or so away to the Red Line Rail, which takes you downtown," notes David B., making it possible to explore Houston without driving.

Electricity usage: Summer temperatures require nearly constant air conditioning use, significantly increasing electric bills for longer stays. Plan for higher utility costs during summer months compared to winter camping in the area.
