The coastal dispersed camping areas feature hard-packed sand that generally accommodates most vehicles, though caution is advised during high tide or after storms. Most established campgrounds remain accessible year-round, with temperatures typically mild in winter and hot and humid in summer. Hurricane season (June through November) warrants special attention for coastal camping. Permits are not required for the beach camping locations, though stay limits of up to 14 days apply. "Great place to park. Pulled in with 23 ft trailer and no problems. No amenities. Great spot to camp for up to 14 days. Few other campers but plenty spread out," noted one visitor about Brazoria Beach.

The Gulf Coast beaches near Angleton receive consistently positive reviews for their accessibility and spaciousness. Campers particularly value the opportunity to camp directly on the beach with ocean views without requiring a four-wheel drive vehicle in most conditions. Several visitors mentioned the relative tranquility during weekdays compared to busier weekends when vendor trucks and faster traffic appear on the beaches. Camp Mohawk County Park, located inland, draws families with its recreational amenities including fishing ponds, hiking trails, playgrounds, and sports courts. A reviewer described it as "a great get away close to home" with "stocked ponds for fishing" and "plenty of picnic tables throughout the park." Most RV parks in the area cater to both short-term and extended stays, with several offering swimming pools, fishing lakes, and other resort-style amenities.

    Gulf Side Oasis Beach Dispersed

Camping on the beach. Great view and quiet evenings.

Camping on the beach is permitted along the dunes but do not park our camp on the dunes. Fires are permitted as long as there's no fire restrictions at the time. Please follow the trash in trash out rules as well and if you do have a fire please be sure to bury the fire. The sand is silty along the dunes so please be careful to not get stuck and if you do it'll take awhile for any trucks to get out there. Please mind the speed limit it's 15 mph on the beach you're supposed to go from west to east as well. And remember that this is an actual road that your tax dollars pay for so please be kind.

    Little Thicket RV Park

    Plenty of better options

I stayed here for a month and noticed quite a bit. For starters, the landscapers leave the grass longer than it should, thus allowing insects and mosquitoes everywhere. The first week i was here, my camer was hit by the mowers, like wtf! The showers/restoom facilities are completely destroyed. Literal pieces of the walls missing. Only one of the three showers were useable the restrooms looked like they have never been clean, what with all the bugs crawling around as well as the toilets being disgusting. You have to leave the property to throw away your trash in a bin. Luckily my spot was right near the dumpster so i just walked over.

The worse part is they charge the same amount as their competitors, but their competitors have much higher standards.

    Brazos Bend State Park Campground

Beautiful park just outside of Houston

We have made day trips to this park for years, but haven’t taken a few nights and camped here - we have been missing out! Gorgeous park with miles and miles of hiking trails. Tons of wildlife - and not just the Alligators. Sites were level and spacious and very well maintained. Will be back again for sure!

    Galveston Island State Park Campground

    Close to the beach

I was in a beach site with no hookups. Site was level and paved. But no bathrooms near by. Beach is a short walk. Wind was constant and it rained often. Staff was nice and was inexpensive for an out of stater.

Camp Margaritaville RV Resort Crystal Beach

    For the price it’s OK

This is my 3rd stay at a Camp Margaritaville. The others had more amenities but all of them had terrible WiFi. This one was I could never connect and was glad for my starlink. The sites are spacious. The park is clean but lots of steps. Pool is lovely and appreciated they have an adult only pool and hot tub. Showers are clean n nice.

    Blue Water RV Resort

    Be Prepared !

It is a well-maintained resort, unfortunately when we were there, the restaurant was not open which was a disappointment. there are a few restaurants a short car ride away. Camp store is well stocked. More importantly, the property sits between two areas of wetlands, so be prepared for the mosquitos in the evening, they are everywhere! Be prepared, bring your own Wi-Fi, the resort Wi-Fi is not strong enough to support streaming connectivity or telecommuting. Electricity, surge protector is a must...ours activated three times in a two day stay, shut our camper off, the protector marked it as a brown out.... granted there was a windstorm but better safe than sorry. We ended up having to cut our stay in half because we needed to take our camper to the factory as we had some wind damage, naturally I did not expect any refund and did not receive one

Guide to Angleton

Camping near Angleton, Texas ranges from established RV resorts to Gulf Coast beach camping within a 28-mile radius. The region sits at a low elevation of approximately 30 feet above sea level with relatively flat terrain that transitions to coastal plains. During winter months (December-February), temperatures typically range from 45-65°F with milder humidity, while summer brings temperatures consistently above 90°F with high humidity levels.

What to do

Wildlife viewing at Brazos Bend State Park: Located 25 miles from Angleton, this park is known for its alligator population and diverse ecosystem. "Brazos Bend is know as the Alligator Park…and for good reason! Of you go on a moderate temperature day (this is the key. If it is too hot or cold you won't see Gators) you can see literally dozens of massive alligators. We are talking 6 feet long and right on the pathway," reports one visitor to Brazos Bend State Park Campground.

Star gazing at the observatory: The George Observatory at Brazos Bend offers regular weekend viewing hours and special events. "The best part of this park is the observatory, which has special events and regular weekend hours pretty much all year. It's absolutely worth staying up late for this!" according to a camper. The observatory requires minimal light pollution, so flashlights and phone screens should be kept off in the area.

Fishing opportunities: Several parks near Angleton offer stocked fishing ponds and coastal fishing. Camp Mohawk County Park provides "stocked ponds for fishing" as mentioned by a visitor. Beach camping locations also offer surf fishing opportunities with no fishing license required when fishing at state parks.

What campers like

Beach access and privacy: The coastal camping options provide direct beach access with enough space between campers. At Follett's Island Beach, "We came on a weekend late July 2021, NO PROBLEM finding space. Recommend some type of canopy or awning, Texas Sun is HOT! Plan ahead, stores are few and far between." The hard-packed sand makes it accessible for most vehicles without four-wheel drive.

Boardwalks and beach amenities: Several coastal parks feature well-maintained boardwalks for easy beach access. At Quintana Beach County Park, "We came here and I loved it! Beach wasn't crowded, playground, showers, toilets, beach access with rinsing station!" This makes the transition from camping to beach time more convenient.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the well-maintained bathrooms and shower facilities. At Galveston Island KOA Holiday, "Bathrooms and showers are super clean. There is a nice swimming pool, lazy river and a huge hot tub to enjoy! They sell frozen margaritas and pina coladas in the office, which is a nice touch!"

What you should know

Mosquito preparation is essential: The coastal and wetland environments create ideal mosquito habitats, especially during warmer months. One visitor to Galveston Island State Park noted, "The only downside? The mosquitoes!! Right at dusk they attacked with a vengenge. Be prepared for that!"

Weekday vs. weekend experience: Beach camping areas have distinct differences between weekdays and weekends. At Brazoria Beach, "Very quite during the week. There is some trash around and that is sad. We picked up every day but still needs help fosterm all. Weekend it get a bit crowed and becouse of the hard pack sand, some people we're going alot faster then the 15 mile an hour speed limit."

Weather considerations: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity. Hurricane season (June-November) can impact coastal camping areas with little notice. Winter offers milder temperatures (45-65°F) with less humidity but occasional cold fronts.

Tips for camping with families

Observatory programs for children: The George Observatory at Brazos Bend offers family-friendly stargazing opportunities. "There are so many friendly astronomy enthusiasts who are willing to share a peek through their telescope (pre-covid) and share their knowledge," notes a visitor.

County parks with recreational facilities: For families seeking activities beyond beach time, Camp Mohawk County Park offers "hiking trails, playgrounds, volleyball, basketball courts, pavilions for rent with bar b q grills, plenty of picnic tables throughout the park for convenience of park goers." The park is also "pet friendly with waste stations around for disposal of their waste."

Educational wildlife viewing: Brazos Bend provides opportunities for children to learn about local wildlife. "There is a small nature centre where you can pet baby Gators and learn about them. Lots of pretty trails and look outs," mentions a visitor. Timing visits during moderate temperature days increases chances of seeing alligators.

Tips from RVers

Concrete pads at most established sites: RV parks near Angleton feature level concrete pads that accommodate various RV sizes. At Brazoria Lakes RV Resort, "This is one of the nicest rv parks in the county. They have on-site washers and dryers, a pool, dog wash, pond, golf carts, free air for your tires, and gates for your security."

Beach camping accessibility: The hard-packed sand at beach camping locations can accommodate RVs without four-wheel drive in most conditions. "Drove in on a Monday and love it already. They were combing the beach section I came in on," reports a Brazoria Beach visitor. Another mentions, "Dodge 2wd 1500 pulling 10 ft trailer with no issues getting in and out."

Limited shade at coastal sites: Most coastal camping spots lack shade trees. As one camper at Galveston KOA noted, "The sites are not shaded at all, which makes it hot for summer camping. There are plenty of palm trees, they're just not fully grown yet." Consider additional awnings or shade structures during summer months.
