Poinsett State Park is situated in the Sandhills region of South Carolina, with terrain that transitions between the Midlands and Coastal Plain. The park features a unique mix of mountain and coastal plain plants due to its location at 300 feet elevation. Weather conditions vary seasonally with humid summers reaching 90°F+ and mild winters rarely dropping below freezing. The park covers 1,000 acres with hiking and biking trails that connect to the surrounding Manchester State Forest.
What to do
Mountain biking trails: Several campgrounds provide access to biking networks, with Poinsett State Park offering dedicated mountain biking paths. "This is a good place to stay to mountain bike, there are two trails in Poinsett and Manchester State Forest is nearby," notes Jodi B. from Poinsett State Park Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Lake Marion offers excellent fishing access at multiple locations. "Great place to stay to fish boat or explore the lake. Bathroom were cleaned. There's a little store on site. Boat ramp fuel and marina on site. Fishing pier to fish off," reports Briggs B. from Taw Caw Campground.
Nature trails: Wooded hiking paths range from easy to moderate difficulty. "The hiking trails that we went on were good, but it was too warm to do a lot of hiking. Instead, we visited the park office for ice cream!" shares Trina W. about her experience at Poinsett State Park.
What campers like
Lake access: Multiple campgrounds offer direct water access. "Bring your boat, Kayak or canoe and beach it at your campsite. Not all sites are water front so reserve them while they last," advises Raymond from Taw Caw Campground about the pet-friendly options.
Secluded sites: Some campgrounds offer more private camping spots. "We stayed here for our son's first birthday, in campsite 30! It was beautiful and we felt like we had plenty of privacy. Our site had a trail attached to the back of it which was really nice for hiking," reports Alisa H. about Santee Lakes KOA.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-serviced restrooms. "The bathrooms were well kept, and cleaned every morning while we were there. Our neighbors were super friendly and helpful with all the camper questions we had!" shares Katherine about her stay at The Lakeshore Campground.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Summer brings intense heat and insects to the area. "I prefer to stay at Poinsett State Park in the fall, winter, or spring as it is located in the sandhills and it can be pretty hot and buggy in the summer," advises Jodi B.
Road conditions: Some access roads present challenges. "The park road is very narrow and uneven with lots of large pot holes. The road to the campground is a little better, but also very narrow," warns Jason F. about Poinsett State Park.
Campsite sizing: Sites vary considerably in size and setup. "Long RVs and trailers may have trouble with the trees and turns of the campground," notes Lindsey M. from Outside Inn Campground.
