    Poinsett State Park Campground

Luxury or backwoods & in between

The pond is good for all ages, but don't expect to be dragging a big boat here. You can rent a canoe or a row boat or bring your own. There is some sediment in the pond, but it is still enjoyable.

You can go all out camping with no extras or enjoy nature in a luxurious cabin. The big one had two bedroom which could sleep two in one & 3 or 4 in the other. Plus, there is an alcove with bunk beds & chairs & a couch to make a total of 11 or 12 easily. It is fully stocked included linens & towels. Cook in or out. There is even a fireplace & screened in porch

And I haven't even touched on the trails. So much to do or relax & enjoy the peace.

Cypress View Campground — Santee State Park

    Cypress View Campground

This is one of the two campgrounds at Santee State Park, and it is as different from the other as night and day. Unlike the dirt roads at Lakeshore Campground(the other campground in the park) the roads in Cypress View are paved. The sites are gravel, and many of them are pull-through sites. Although tent camping is allowed in Cypress View, I would feel out of place since most of the campers are RVs. However, our teardrop camper fits right in. Cypress View is a much smaller campground than Lakeshore Campground, but the amenities are the same. Every campsite is a short walk from the lake, and the campground is closer to the store than Lakeshore Campground. Unlike Lakeshore Campground, Cypress View Campground’s sites are much closer together, so there is not as much privacy. The campground is quiet, other than the noise from the highway.   That may be one reason to be in an RV or a travel trailer--to cut out some of the noise at night.

Close to the campground, there is a tennis court, a boat launch, Fisheagle Tours, a picnic shelter, kayak rentals, hiking trails, and more. It is conveniently located to most of the state park’s attractions without having to drive so far. Cypress View Campground is also close to the main office and the boat dock.

If you had rather stay in a cabin, there are cabin rentals on the water. They are accessed by way of a boardwalk across the water. The bath house is modern and has hot showers. It is centrally located so that it isn’t that far of a walk from any of the campsites.

Overall, I do recommend this campground, especially if you are in a travel trailer or an RV. If you are tent camper, you would probably better enjoy being at the other campground in the park.

Cypress View Campground — Santee State Park

    Big campground on the lake

We camped here over the weekend with the pups. The state park has 2 different campgrounds. We decided for the Lakeshore one. It's pretty big with over 100 campsites. They have the usual amenities like fire pit, and picnic table with bench. Our was private, but the sites in the middle are not. The bathhouse was very clean with nice hot showers. The park has several trails, a visitor center, cabins on the water, at least 2 boat ramps with a bait shop. There are no trash cans near the campsites, there is one big dumpster at the entrance of the campground. It's about 1.30h to Folly Beach. We would definitely camp here again.

    Poinsett State Park Campground

    Nice state park

We tent camped for the weekend in mid October. The park was probably 80% full, but didn’t seem crowded. All the spaces were spread out and the sites were level. We stayed at site 30, so it was a close walk to the bathhouse, with plenty of space, picnic table, and fire ring. The bathhouse was in fair condition, but the hot water was limited. The mens bathroom definitely needed to be cleaned. There were lots of trails, a pond, and a park for thing to do. T-mobile service barely worked. Check out our review https://youtu.be/pL1zgad0rN0

    Weston Lake Recreation Area

    Peaceful

I was stationed at Jackson from’07-‘09 and the only thing that has really changed is the dam is being worked on so you can only observe the lake, no swimming, boating, anything on the lake until repairs are completed. The receptionist said they’ve been working on it for maybe 4 years. Hopefully it’ll be completed sooner than later. The grounds could be kept up a little better as could the restrooms/bath houses but I imagine they lost some revenue due to the lake being closed for dam repairs.

There isn’t any concerns getting back here, the biggest rigs will not have any problems. All sites are large concrete pads, FHU. Most sites are spaced very well, some better than others but you won’t be on top of anyone whichever site you’re at. They have a large concrete patio area, nearly the size of the pad itself with a picnic table and fire pit/grill and stand alone grill.

Verizon cell coverage is adequate. I had 2 bars and LTE, sometimes 5G. Not like being in the city but sufficient. No wifi.

There are cabins and tent sites as well. This isn’t a large campground but there were still a few open spaces.

There will be various bugle calls throughout, morning, day and night. You may hear firing range training going on in the distance. You should expect this and it should not be seen as negative, you’re on a military campground.

Current RV site price a night is $35, if you have a National park pass it’s $32.50. Despite the lake being off limits right now I will still come back. Once it’s opened back up I’m sure it will be more busy, right now it’s very peaceful.

    Colleton State Park Campground

    Easy stop over

Easy stop over for a night or two. Right off of I95. Next to a major road, so there is car/truck noise during the day. None of the sites are private, so I wouldn’t call this a “destination” campground. Great if you want to fish and kayak the Edisto River!

The bathrooms are very clean and air conditioned. Sites are all very clean with power, water, picnic table, and fire ring. There are nicely spaced out trees, so if you have a hammock, bring it. Didn’t have mosquito issues, but beware there are a lot of ants and they bite!!

Best sites are 6, 8, and 9. We camped in site 10.

    Johnston Landing Campground & Cabins

Low Country Camping @ Johnston Landing

Once you successfully navigate all of the backroads past Lake Marion and directly on the shores of Lake Moultrie, you’ll eventually find a small nook in the road where you’ll discover Johnston Landing, which is set off immediately by what looks to be a small bayou playing home to likely some grizzly gators(but truth be told, I never saw any while we were there). If you are coming to these parts, be sure to bring a floating vessel of any type– fishing boat, kayak, canoe or whatever will stay afloat– but if not, no worries, the good people here at Johnston Landing have you covered as they offer a paddle boat, kayaks and a row boat for rent. Insider’s tip? One of the best hikes in all of South Carolina– the Palmetto Trial is just about 5 miles away, but is definitely worth the hike as here you’ll be able to witness first hand the sunken giant Cypress trees, amazing bird watching(Ospreys and Herons in particular). As for amenities, this well-groomed campground offers up fairly new picnic tables, all the basic hook-ups(water, electric and sewage), BBQ/ grills and fairly clean restrooms and showers. Sportsman’s Bar& Grill just down the road is about the only thing decent within close proximity, otherwise, be prepared to cook whatever you plan on dining on for each meal.

    Happy Camping!

Cypress View Campground — Santee State Park

Beautiful place to camp on the shores of Lake Marion

This is a great campground for anyone who enjoys watersports. Lake Marion is a great place for boating, kayaking, and fishing. Camp sites are mostly level and have water and a variety of electrical hookup options. Some fun but easy hiking trails link the two campgrounds in a loop. Very pet friendly.

Guide to Pinewood

Camping cabins near Pinewood, South Carolina offer access to Lake Marion, part of the Santee Cooper Lakes system with over 315 miles of shoreline. The area sits within the High Hills of Santee region, characterized by sandy soil and diverse forest ecosystems mixing pine and hardwood species. Most rental cabins remain open year-round, with peak season between April and October when average temperatures range from 75-90°F.

What to do

Biking trails in natural surroundings: Poinsett State Park Campground provides excellent mountain biking options within and near the park. "This is a good place to stay to mountain bike, there are two trails in Poinsett and Manchester State Forest is nearby," notes one visitor. The trails offer varied terrain suited for different skill levels.

Fishing for record catches: Bells Marina & Resort provides direct access to fishing spots known for trophy catches. A visitor mentioned, "I even caught a trophy-sized bass that made my week." The marina offers convenient amenities for anglers including a fish cleaning station and boat launch facilities.

Swimming options beyond the lake: Palmetto Shores RV Resort features additional water recreation beyond lake access. "Palmetto shores has a nice outdoor activity area, a nice lake beach and a really nice pool and lazy River," reports one camper. These amenities provide alternatives when lake conditions aren't ideal.

What campers like

Secluded sites with trail access: Poinsett State Park Campground offers peaceful campsites with direct trail connections. "We stayed here for our son's first birthday, in campsite 30! It was beautiful and we felt like we had plenty of privacy. Our site had a trail attached to the back of it which was really nice for hiking," shares one visitor.

Exceptional customer service: Campers frequently mention the welcoming staff at various properties. At Santee Lakes KOA, a visitor noted, "We were impressed from our very first contact. They have a check in station at the gate so you don't even have to get out of your vehicle. Then they have people on golf carts take you to your site which is great!"

Clean facilities despite rustic settings: Despite their remote location, most cabins maintain clean facilities. "They have all the amenities you need for a little getaway, including a fireplace," reports one Poinsett State Park visitor about the WPA era cabins. Regular maintenance keeps comfort levels high even in primitive settings.

What you should know

Road conditions affect larger vehicles: Several campgrounds have challenging access roads. "The park road is very narrow and uneven with lots of large pot holes. The road to the campground is a little better, but also very narrow. It would be difficult to pull off to let another vehicle pass without fear of ending up off the road or hitting a tree," warns a Poinsett visitor.

Site sizes vary significantly: Not all cabin sites accommodate large camping setups. At Weston Lake Recreation Area, "I was in a spot that had the Hookups at opposite end of concrete pad and opposite side. I ended up buying an additional 20 ft. of dumping tubing ($60)." Measure your setup before booking.

Seasonal facility limitations: Water access may be restricted during maintenance periods. "The only thing that has really changed is the dam is being worked on so you can only observe the lake, no swimming, boating, anything on the lake until repairs are completed," reports a visitor about Weston Lake Recreation Area.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access considerations: Multiple campgrounds offer playground facilities. "There was boat access, a playground, nature trails and everyone was so friendly!" notes a visitor about Cypress View Campground at Santee State Park.

Field areas for children: Look for campsites near open spaces where children can play. "The camp sites were on the smaller side but opened up to a large field area where the kids and dog could run around and play," shares a Poinsett State Park visitor.

Recreational building access: Mill Creek Marina and Campground and other properties offer common areas for family activities. One visitor noted Poinsett has "a nice recreational building available for campers to use, complete with games, books, tables, and electricity." These spaces provide backup entertainment during inclement weather.

Tips from RVers

Hookup placement challenges: RVers should confirm utility locations before booking. "I was in a spot that had the hookups at opposite end of concrete pad and opposite side," notes a visitor about Weston Lake Recreation Area. Bring extension cords and hoses to accommodate varied setups.

Tree spacing affects larger rigs: Many campgrounds have heavily wooded sites that limit RV sizes. "Long RVs and trailers may have trouble with the trees and turns of the campground," warns a Poinsett State Park visitor. Call ahead to confirm clearance for larger units.

Delivery services available: Some campgrounds offer convenience services for RVers. At Santee Lakes KOA, "They deliver firewood and pizza. The pizza was excellent," reports one camper. These amenities reduce the need to break camp for supplies.
