Best Campgrounds near Pineville, SC

Pineville, South Carolina provides access to multiple water-oriented campgrounds situated along Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie. The area features a mix of established campgrounds with full hookups like Angels Landing Campground, Bells Marina & Resort, and Santee Lakes KOA. Most camping options in this region cater to RV camping with amenities such as electric hookups, water access, and sewer connections, though several locations also accommodate tent campers and offer cabin rentals. These mixed-use campgrounds typically include boat launches, fishing docks, and water access points, making them popular destinations for anglers and boaters exploring the Santee Cooper lakes system.

The camping season runs year-round in this low-country region, with many campgrounds maintaining full operations throughout all seasons. Summer brings higher humidity and temperatures, making waterfront sites particularly desirable. "The campground was clean and peaceful. Pet friendly. Dogs had a blast on the trails and finding a little hidden beach!" noted one visitor to Short Stay Navy Outdoor Moncks Corner. Campground access generally requires no special vehicles, as most sites are accessible via paved or well-maintained gravel roads. Cell service is typically available throughout the area, though signal strength may vary at more remote waterfront locations. Most established campgrounds require reservations, which become essential during summer weekends and fishing tournament dates.

Water-based recreation defines the camping experience near Pineville, with fishing being the primary activity. Campgrounds like Blacks Camp, Hills Landing, and Johnston Landing specifically cater to anglers with boat launches, fishing piers, and tackle shops. Campers frequently mention the quality of fishing for catfish, striped bass, and other species in their reviews. Several locations feature restaurants serving fresh catches and local cuisine. Sites with lake views tend to fill quickly during peak seasons. While privacy between campsites receives mixed reviews, with some campers noting closely spaced sites, the natural setting and water access compensate for this limitation. The Palmetto Trail, located approximately five miles from Johnston Landing Campground, offers hiking opportunities through cypress forests where visitors can observe local wildlife including ospreys and herons.

    Buck Hall Recreation Area

    Good for boating and fishing

Calm campground, with good ramp for boating and a pier for fishing. Don't forget your bug-spray, mosquitos are aggressive here.

    Santee Lakes KOA

    Needs Work

We stay here twice both times were just OK. The pool is crowded and murky, suggesting it good us a good cleaning. We stay for 4th of July weekend and can only describe the experience as a free for all. With camper literally on top of each other and spreading into the next camp site. Our neighbor’s site consisted of a RV, a large six-person tent and a pick-up truck tent parked half on our site. We ventured down to the lake swimming area and doing doughnuts near or on top of the swim boundary line most of the day. To recap– can’t swim in the dirty pool and can’t swim in the lake. In fairness the KOA as made some improvement since our stay but not enough for us to go back.

    Bells Marina & Resort

    Perfect stop on i95

Our road stop off I-95 at Bells Marina was an absolute gem! This lakeside campsite, perfectly nestled on the water, delivered stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere that made our getaway unforgettable. The newly paved, smooth road leading to the campsite—conveniently accessible from I-95—made our arrival effortless and stress-free. The well-stocked on-site store was a lifesaver, with their phenomenal pizza being the perfect quick and delicious meal after a long drive. Anglers in our group raved about the new fish cleaning station, a fantastic addition for preparing fresh catches with ease. With Food Lion just a 10-minute drive away, grabbing extra supplies was a breeze. The quiet, picturesque setting provided a rejuvenating escape from the road. Bells Marina is a must-visit for anyone seeking a convenient and exceptional lakeside camping experience!

    Halfway Creek - Dispersed Camping

    Peaceful area

I stayed out here for a full night. The area has been cleaned up and a few times during the day and night a police officer patrolled the area. Just smiled and waved.

Campground at James Island County Park

    4.7 stars

Pretty fantastic place for families. Awesome trails, huge playground, water park, fishing, rock climbing walls, and very close to folly Beach, which is gorgeous. The sites aren't huge but are clean and convenient to camp store and trails. Our site was a pull through with some nice palmettos but not a lot of privacy. Best sites looked to be the 40s and 50s. Campground is 15 minutes to downtown. Squirrels chewed through our propane hoses, which wasn't great. Overall this is a heck of a place to stay and play.

    Taw Caw Campground and Marina

    Another great stay

Stayed for the Memorial Day weekend. As is usual it was a great stay. We were at Site J and I which continues to be a favorite. The only drawback is the proximity to the fishing dock and cleaning station. The traffic is heavy at times with multiple golf carts invading your site. The other drawback is the noise at night. During our stay there were young adults raising cane on the dock after 10pm. It’s not bad if you are in an RV, however if you are in a tent you will probably lose sleep.

    Outside Inn Campground

    Such a great place

Small RV park which also has a lot of animal’s. There is a great trail walk and lots of animals bunnies, pigs, donkeys, chickens, goats and a guinea fowl! I would certainly come back. We stayed in a pull thru #16 which was level.

    Taw Caw Campground and Marina

    LAKE LIFE CAMPING

Taw Caw is our close to home Staycation favorite spot. If you want to camp close to the water Taw Caw offers several spots. Bring your boat, Kayak or canoe and beach it at your campsite. Not all sites are water front so reserve them while they last. Great Marina with Ramp, Fuel and boat slips. Outstanding opportunity to fish from the fishing pier that includes a cleaning station. The camp store offers live bait and limited tackle. The restrooms are clean and well equipped.

Guide to Pineville

Camping sites near Pineville, South Carolina cluster around Lakes Marion and Moultrie, which form part of the Santee Cooper lakes system with 450 miles of shoreline. The area sits at approximately 75 feet above sea level, with camping options concentrated primarily on the eastern shores where water levels remain consistent year-round. Winter temperatures typically range from 38-60°F, creating favorable conditions for off-season camping when fishing remains productive.

What to do

Fishing from shore or pier: The extensive shorelines at Blacks Camp and Restaurant provide multiple access points for anglers without boats. "Black's Camp is in the heart of the Santee Cooper area of South Carolina and has been around for several decades. It's not a destination for someone looking for the 'camp in the woods' type person, but it is the destination for those wishing to go fishing and hunting," notes camper Myron C.

Kayaking on protected waters: The canal connecting Lakes Marion and Moultrie offers protected paddling routes with less wind than the open lakes. Hill's Landing & RV Park sits directly on this waterway. "Beautiful, clean, friendly and helpful staff! Out in the country located on a canal! Peaceful and quiet park," writes Cathy P.

Hiking the Palmetto Trail: Located approximately 5 miles from Johnston Landing Campground, this trail section features cypress forests and wildlife viewing opportunities. "One of the best hikes in all of South Carolina—the Palmetto Trial is just about 5 miles away, but is definitely worth the hike as here you'll be able to witness first hand the sunken giant Cypress trees, amazing bird watching (Ospreys and Herons in particular)," shares a visitor.

Bird watching along shorelines: The lake edges host numerous wading birds and raptors. Early mornings provide best viewing conditions, particularly at Cypress View Campground where wooded shorelines meet open water. "We were right on the lake. Easy park to walk and explore," notes Mary G.
