Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Landrum, SC

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat's exclusive dog-first camping environment sits near Landrum in Rutherfordton, NC. This specialized campground caters specifically to canine companions with multiple off-leash dog parks, agility equipment, and dedicated swimming areas for dogs. Emberglow Outdoor Resort offers more traditional camping with pet-friendly accommodations across tent sites, RV spaces, cabins, yurts, and glamping options. Most campgrounds in the area require pets to remain leashed when outside designated off-leash areas, with leash lengths typically restricted to six feet. The bathrooms at some campgrounds may not be as well maintained as the pet amenities. Pet policies generally limit guests to 2-3 dogs per site, though Four Paws Kingdom places no breed restrictions on visiting dogs despite some area campgrounds banning pit bulls and rottweilers.

Hiking trails surrounding the campgrounds provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with the Green River offering water access at several points. Silver Creek Campground features river access where dogs can cool off during summer months, though owners should watch for wildlife including bears that frequent the area. Local veterinary services are available in nearby towns, with emergency animal care located in Spartanburg, approximately 30 minutes from most campgrounds. Seasonal considerations include tick prevention during warmer months and extra bedding during winter camping trips. The quiet mountain setting allows dogs to enjoy nature without excessive noise from highways or urban areas. Many campgrounds enforce quiet hours beginning at 10:00 PM to minimize barking disruptions, with some sites offering special pet waste stations throughout the grounds to maintain cleanliness.

    Asheville West KOA

Far enough away to feel like camping and still close to the city

The Asheville KOA is very pet and RV friendly. There are a number of walking trails of easy to moderate difficulty that run throughout the property. The dog park is a great place to let the pups off of the leashes for a bit. Staff pickup trash daily between 10-11AM at your site, but dumpsters are easily accessible.

We camped here in our 22' travel trailer. The back in sites are mostly level with a mix of dirt and gravel. If you're looking for a sunny spot, request one of the even-numbered back-ins. If you would prefer to be mostly in the shade, go for an odd-numbered spot. 20/30/50 amp electric, cable, water and sewer were easily accessible at each site. Camp sites are not very large, so be mindful of volume and lights with respect to your neighbors.

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat

    Awesome for dogs and people!

We camped here back in August and had a blast! We brought our two dogs and they also had a great time. This site is very dog friendly (obviously), with many sites having their own fenced in yards. We opted for a site without a fence, which we regretted once we got there. The gravel at our site was painful for our dog’s feet and they had a hard time walking on it. The dog parks made up for this! There are multiple large dog parks located at the campground. The restrooms were awesome, but are single person use only. We felt like we were the only ones using them (that’s how well maintained they were). Campsites are close together but we didn’t mind. The staff was great, they helped us find our site and even helped us back our camper in. There was power and water hookup at each site. There is tons of stuff to do around the area too. Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are right around the corner and SO FUN.

    Bent River Equestrian

Great camping near mountain biking and hiking

Great place to spend a couple of nights. Went over Labor Day weekend with 5 or 6 other groups and still felt like we had full privacy. Fire pits, an outdoor shower, and a porta-potty. Cute horses and barn cats to pet and watch

    Asheville West KOA

    Nice stay.

Other than rain almost every day, we enjoyed this spot while checking out Asheville and Biltmore Estate. The campground is very wooded, allowing for shady space. The showers were decently clean. Garbage is picked up at your site, or you can recycle next to the shower house which is not located far for the back section, which we were in, with full hookups. We enjoyed the trail through the woods that circles the whole campground. Our dog enjoyed the dog park. There is a pool and camp store.

    Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground

Not quite great for a senior

Great and clean unless you have a very active dog and you're sorta out of shape. Their dog park extremely small and hilly and has holes you need to watch. The yellow jackets were terrible and I got stung while just sitting at our site. Also a hike to take garbage to their dumpster. Some sort of pickup or maybe bear proof cans half way point, also more flat area for dog walks. If they would take in some of the area around the horse shoe area that would help too .

    Asheville West KOA

Great home base for a week

We stayed here for a week to visit the Asheville area. The location is amazing very short drive into town, hiking spots, and I highly recommend you take a walk around Lake Junaluska . We booked this spot for the location and it delivered. Yes, that came with a lot of highway noise... but again we wanted an easy jumping off point. So we got exactly what we booked. What was the biggest difference maker was the staff. So lovely, so kind! Trash pick up from our site and each night they delivered firewood to us. Even would refill your propane tank and deliver it back to you. Spots were a little squeezed but not too bad. Dog park was awesome for our two pups.

    Travelers Rest-North Greenville KOA

    Ranger Review: Travelers Rest KOA

Very pretty campground in the fall. Operators live onsite and were friendly. Full connections and no issues leveling. Easy in/out and close to Greenville, Paris Mountain, Travelers Rest, Swamp Rabbit Trail etc. Bathhouses were very clean, but the lights are on motion detectors which weren’t sensitive enough to pick you up in the shower. We both had a couple moments of total darkness to contend with. A camp cat hung around our site at times and loved the heat coming out of our furnace. We don’t have pets so didn’t mind. Cell coverage was great (att & Verizon), so we had no issues working our 9-5s. Love the bubbling creek next to our site, which was so pretty from our back window. We’d definitely stay again.

    Asheville West KOA

    Smaller large KOA

Considering the actual square footage of this KOA, there was a lot of unused space. Which for a KOA was strange. There were two open fields so maybe they plan to expand. There was a trail that meandered through the park which was nice, though steep and slippery in a few places, be careful.

This is a very “strategically” located KOA. SO much to do in this area. Bring your mountain bike, hiking boots and drinking cup. Bakeries, Orchards, breweries, mountains, waterfalls and bike trails just to name a few things ;)

The campground is near I-40 but I didn’t even notice it when I was in my van, sorta white noise. I was in the back loop so maybe the front area gets more noise from the interstate.

There is a dog park and maybe I’m dog fickle but it’s a smaller park in a huge grass field....why not make the dog park bigger??

The sites in a straight line are close, the ones in the curve have more room. There’s a shower house in the back loop which is new and well maintained. Strange too was the dump site in the back loop, I didn’t see one in the front area.

Guide to Landrum

Camping opportunities near Landrum, South Carolina provide access to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 feet. The region experiences moderate temperatures with occasional overnight freezes between November and March. Most camping areas sit along watershed tributaries that feed the Green River or Middle Saluda River systems, offering multiple access points for water recreation during warmer months.

What to do

Hiking trails: Paris Mountain State Park offers multiple difficulty levels across its trail system. One camper noted, "There are lots of trails and a big pond. Lots of bicycles riding around the park." Another visitor shared, "Great hiking trails and easy access campsites. Mountain lake was a little small for kayaking, but we had fun."

Water activities: Wilderness Cove Campground provides direct access to the Green River for tubing excursions. "Tubing is great, but the campsites and cabins are very limited," reports one visitor. The campground's location makes it ideal for cooling off during summer months.

Mountain biking: The Davidson River Campground connects directly to Pisgah National Forest's extensive trail network. As one reviewer explained, "If you're thinking of riding the mtb trails you're in luck. They start literally across the davidson river from the campground."

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Jones Gap State Park campsites offer significant separation from neighbors. A camper mentioned, "Unlike other state park campgrounds, each spot is about a quart mile from the next, so you feel like you have the mountain to yourself."

Diverse accommodation options: Emberglow Outdoor Resort features multiple camping styles beyond standard sites. According to one reviewer, "There are options as to how you want to camp. The camping options are very unique and diverse. They have your typical RV sites and tent sites, all of which have green space around them."

Swimming opportunities: Silver Creek Campground provides water access for cooling off. "This camp ground offers tubing on the green river, and a couple places to camp. One has a pool and is in the hills and the other is primitive and has a bar and food," notes one visitor.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds in the Landrum area fill quickly during peak season. One Lake Powhatan visitor shared, "Book ahead - the guy said they'd been completely full since June."

Site variability: Campsite levelness varies significantly throughout the region due to mountainous terrain. A Paris Mountain camper warned, "Some site are very uneven," while another noted, "Some of the sites needed a little rehab and weren't very flat."

Weather considerations: The mountain elevation creates unpredictable weather patterns, especially in transitional seasons. One Table Rock State Park visitor advised, "Just make sure that if you hike during the winter to give yourself plenty of time to finish the trail and to wear good trail shoes since ice can be expected."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Orchard Lake Campground offers dedicated child activities. "This is a great campground to camp with ur family. They have swimming, a little zip line. My then 7 year old played on it all day they even have a game room," shared one parent.

Accessible activities: Campgrounds with mixed terrain provide options for all ages. A reviewer reported, "We went kayaking and swimming daily. There is a slide in the middle of the pond that my son loved. When it rained the game room had a movie on and lots to do inside."

Multiple bathroom facilities: When camping with children, proximity to restrooms matters. One camper mentioned, "Bathrooms are clean and there's hot showers. Firewood and ice are available for purchase by the gate."

Tips from RVers

Site approach challenges: Several campgrounds have narrow access roads requiring caution. A Paris Mountain visitor cautioned, "The road through the park back to the campground is pretty narrow at some points - we don't know how we would have managed if we had met another RV!"

Full hookup availability: Not all pet friendly camping near Landrum, South Carolina offers complete RV connections. One visitor advised, "All RV sites are full hookups and green space around them. Our site backed up to a beautiful stream with some trees for hammocks and shade."
