Little Pee Dee State Park Campground

A quiet and clean state park

Little Pee Dee State Park is a quiet and clean campground on the banks of Lake Norton. Locals often come here for fishing and non-motorized boating.  We were fortunate to witness a mass crayfish event--the recent flooding had brought them out of the swamp and up the spillway, much to the delight of seafood lovers.

The campground had two different campground hosts, and they kept the restrooms and campsites immaculately clean.

Campsites have a fire ring/grate and a picnic table, but no trash cans, and you'll need to bring your trash to a large bin located at the edge of the campsites.

There are some nice sites right at the edge of Lake Norton, but the abundant water plants don't allow you to fish from the side of the lake, and it's not really a swimming lake. These sites accommodate RVs and have water & electric.  If you're on a budget, there are tent-only sites off the water.

The campground recently built a sleeping cabin, which is a cute structure with air conditioning/heat, bunk beds, and a free-standing bed (the cabin sleeps four, total). Guests can use a fire ring and Adirondack chairs, hammock, and grill.

The park also has a nice shelter for use.

There is no WiFi here, and cellular internet is spotty. There isn't a camp store, but the Ranger Station does have ice, firewood, and a small number of souvenirs for sale.

    Florence RV Park

    Drive-By RV Parking Lot Community

This spot is so close to I95 (look for exit 169) that you’ll both feel and hear the swoosh of passing by traffic 24/7. So, while you’ll incur ease and convenience, that will come at a cost (privacy and quietude being what you will sacrifice most).  Located in the NE pocket of the Palmetto State, Florence RV Park, while not a destination per se, could be a nice (and incredibly easy) layover on your trip destination to anywhere else up or down this major east coast highway artery.

Despite the location, this spot has a lot to offer: an intimate little public pool behind the management office, WiFi hotspots, dog park, scattered picnic tables (in pretty good condition), kid’s playground, 20 / 30 / 50 amp hook-ups, dump station, dog walk area, catch & release fishing pond, propane refueling station, vending machines, small pond for fishing, basketball court, volleyball, badminton and horseshoe rings. There’s even 4-5 log cabins for rent at the front of the property (with full access to all the highway noise) and of course, good old fashioned on-site laundry facilities along with a mini-store that has most of the basics covered as well as fairly spartan shower / bathing facilities.

Insider’s tip? Here's a few: (1) The further east you are on the property, all the better as you’ll be positioned as far away from I95 traffic and noise; (2) If tent camping, I highly recommend spots #A7 – A13 and if you are RV’ing I recommend #L9 – L18 as well as any of the locations on J, K and F11 – F16; (3) There’s a lot to explore near here, from the Grand Strand of South Carolina, of course, Myrtle Beach and even Darlington Raceway, so if you don’t mind the overpopulated location with its westerly view of non-stop traffic, then this could be a good place to stop for the night or from which to launch your exploration of the area; (4) If you’ve looked at this RV campground’s website, don’t be fooled by the pictures – I don’t think any of them were actually taken of the place, save for the pond, and that was a close-up; and (5) If you are looking for a nearby spot to sample the local fare, I recommend checking out The Drive-In Restaurant with its 50s era nostalgia, big juicy burgers, fried everything, homemade onion rings and thick, creamy chocolate shakes.

    Happy Camping!

    Pirateland Family Camping Resort

    Perfect ocean front spot

Very nice park! We had ocean front spot site 695. Spot was sandy and looked a little sketchy to back into, looks as if someone got stuck. We ended up backing up just fine with no problems and pulled out just fine as well. Bathrooms were close and very clean, great water pressure. They pick your trash right at your spot every morning. Had a minor electrical problem, called and they were right there vey quick and fixed the issue. Lots of things to do, Pool, lazy river, splash pad, and kayak/peddle boats. Putt putt cost money but it’s available. Gulf cart rentals as well. The ocean beach is so beautiful and it was not busy. Just a perfect spot. I recommend going to Broadway on the beach for things to do in the area.

We did how ever have family fly in and rented a cabin. Sharon from the office was not so friendly she only deals with cabin rentals so if your here to camp in campground it’s a great place!

Pedro's Campground at South of the Border

    Roadside RV Amusement Park

If you haven’t been to a roadside circus lately or don’t want to shell out the dough for Disney World, then this particular RV amusement park location just off of I-95 and due south of the North Carolina/ South Carolina border may just be the perfect spot for you.

With a wide-array of parallel, elongated parking lanes for your parking pleasure, all of the sites come equipped with the typical 30/ 50 amp electrical hook-ups, waste disposal and water connections. There’s the standard picnic table, fire ring/BBQ, garbage receptacles, 3-4 communal bathhouses and even a handful of community BBQ’s.

The hosts, who work out of the Camp Pedro Store/ Office are incredibly nice and offer pricing by the night or week. There’s not a ton of amenities to pick and choose from– APART FROM THE NON-STOP LINEUP OF AMUSEMENT PARK options you will find everywhere! But the campground itself features 2-3 community playgrounds, group BBQ’s and the everything-you-need store. And while I looked, there’s no pool to speak of.

Insider’s Tip? Near this RV parking lot, you do have access to Betsy Jackson Bay if you want to get away and off the beaten path a bit to explore nature… otherwise, head back to Pedro’s, put on your silly hat, load up the car full of tchotchkies and get your fill of this whacky Tex Mex experience!

    Happy Camping!

    Myrtle Beach KOA

    Rustic Cabin Check in delay

We just visited the Myrtle Beach KOA and stayed in one of their rustic camping cabins. First the good — The staff we dealt with were pleasant and helpful. The campground was generally clean and there was a reasonable amount of space between the sites. Now the bad — we arrived at 4:30pm to check in and found that the camp store closed at 4:00pm - everyday. For those who forgot something or needed to pick up some ice or other necessity, you would have to leave the campground to get it. Second; upon arrival (4:30) we were told that none of the rustic cabins were ready and to come back in an hour. Not a great way to be welcomed. Next, the shower/bath house appeared clean but there was a distinct smell that made it feel like it might not have been that clean. Finally, the KOA is right downtown, so there is a good deal of noise from outside the campground. Lots of sirens, fireworks, and engine noise from US 17(Business). Final analysis: We really don’t like Myrtle Beach (too much of a tourist trap) and we probably wouldn’t come back. We were only there because I had some work to do in the area and needed a less expensive place to stay.

CarrollWoods RV Park at Grapefull Sisters Vineyard

    Actually 4.8 Stars

Spent the week before Memorial Day and Memorial Weekend at Carrollwoods. This is really a nice campground. The sites are well-spaced with a picnic table, fire pit and grill at each site. There’s a pool that was unfortunately out of service during most of our visit there during the 90-degree heat. It was finally open when the weather cooled. There were not many other campers until the weekend and then there were only a few sites left. The grounds are very spacious. Lots of room to walk with a few short paths that go into the woods. It has one of the best dog parks that I have ever been to. It is very spacious, fully shaded by lots of trees and even has a few man-made hills for the pooches to climb. The only downside was it appeared as if the waste bin hadn’t been empty in several days. I visited the winery and the two women who own it are helpful and lively. If you visit, you must get one of their wine floats. My only negatives were they advertise free WiFi and cable. I wish businesses would not promote poor quality products as “free”. I probably could access their WiFi no more than for 3 times in all the time I was there and would last no more than 10 minutes. The cable had several odd channels and there was so much buffering, it was often unwatchable. My only other issue is that they need to do some cleanup in their gardens. There were several planters with dead plants in them from the year before. Either refill them or get rid of them. The beds are well designed, but needed a good weeding. Even with its flaws, this is definitely a campground I would return to.

    Huntington Beach State Park Campground

Nice large sites close to the beach

Don’t confuse this campground with Hunting Island (many people do). Although expensive, the sites here are very generous in size. Sites on the outside of the loop have more privacy (sites 1-33 have trees behind them for even more privacy).

The restrooms and showers are clean.

There are multiple access points to a very walkable or runnable beach. No bike rentals on-site but there is a local bike shop that will deliver to your site. Tours of Atalaya available plus other programs (although we didn’t take advantage of these). There is a large store with many souvenirs along with general necessities. If you order three or more bundles of firewood, they will deliver to your site.

It would have been nice to have a utility sink to wash dishes in as there are in other state parks. Also, like all other South Carolina state parks, alcohol is prohibited.

Although I usually take many photos at our campgrounds, for some reason, I didn't here!

Guide to Conway

Cabins near Conway, South Carolina offer a blend of inland tranquility and beach accessibility. Located approximately 15 miles from Myrtle Beach, Conway sits along the Waccamaw River with coastal plains and pine forests creating distinct camping environments. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, while fall brings milder temperatures and fewer crowds at cabin rentals.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The ponds at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Daddy Joe's are popular but require patience. According to Blair F., "The ponds are overfished and difficult to catch fish so make sure to use finesse."

Beachfront access: Many campgrounds provide direct beach entry with on-site amenities. At Pirateland Family Camping Resort, Dr. David P. noted, "There are quite a few campgrounds in the area to choose from and this is among the best... If you bring a kayak, there are some great salt marsh areas to check out as well."

Winter activities: Several cabin rentals operate year-round with seasonal programming. One visitor at Ocean Lakes Family Campground shared, "We will be spending New Years week there and understand that it is completely full! This has become our go to beach resort."

Nature exploration: For wildlife viewing, Huntington Beach State Park Campground provides opportunities to spot local fauna. Theresa M. recommends, "Do not miss saying hi to the wildlife on your way in. The egrets, herons, and gators are a beautiful sight heading to the camp sites and beaches."

What campers like

Beach proximity with seclusion: Cabin accommodations at Barefoot RV Resort offer access to both beaches and commercial areas. One camper noted, "You could walk to grocery store, liquor store, restaurants, the beach, and barefoot landing. You could drive a gulf cart to all these places too."

Concrete pads: Many campers appreciate level surfaces at their cabin sites. Josh D. observed at Barefoot RV Resort, "All concrete sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service. Gated and safe. As soon as a camper pulls out, they pressure wash every site as needed."

Maintenance standards: Cleanliness ranks high in positive reviews. At Myrtle Beach Travel Park, Jerry W. highlighted, "Their bath houses are modern and clean, they allow pets and even have an activity director who plans family oriented adventure."

Site options: Cabins with different locations within the same property offer varying experiences. Becky V. from Apache Family Campground shared, "We decided to move to a different site that gave is some more room and not sandwiched in between other campers. It wasn't at the beach area - but we did not mind the walk."

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Off-season availability differs significantly from peak season. According to Deb P., "We have stayed at Carolina Pines 4 times with the last time being for a month. It was a wonderful experience with the staff providing activities, especially on the weekends."

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds have defined quiet hours. Samantha O. reported at Ocean Lakes, "Noise times are 7am-11pm. The good thing about this is at 11pm everything is quiet. No one is on the roads. All golf carts go away and people settle down for the night."

Golf cart regulations: Many campgrounds have specific rules about golf carts. At Huntington Beach State Park Campground, site restrictions differ from private campgrounds, with more focus on natural settings rather than amenity access.

Bath facility conditions: Quality and availability of shower facilities vary between properties. One visitor noted, "The bathhouse was acceptable, not really new, basic but clean with lots of hot water. A few blocks from the beach, but they have a shuttle (in-season) and golf carts to rent."

Tips for camping with families

Activity scheduling: Some resorts require reservations for amenities. Rose K. from Myrtle Beach Travel Park explained, "We were required to reserve pool time and arcade time. The beach area is great as well as the store and funnel cake stand."

Age-appropriate options: Different sections of water parks cater to specific ages. At Sun Outdoors Myrtle Beach, Michele P. observed, "It has indoor pools, outdoor pools, waterslide, putt putt, bowling alley, and an arcade... Great place for kids to ride their bikes and splash in the water park."

Safety considerations: Beach areas with lifeguards provide additional security for families with children. Jonah J. noted at Pirateland, "We had a great time staying at site 726 on the beach. So convenient to everything. Bath houses were clean. Plenty of family fun activities. Kids on bicycles and scooters did scare me a bit riding around with all the traffic."

Accommodation sizing: Cabin layouts vary significantly between properties. One camper reported, "Two of my children and their families are renting the tiny houses that are available for rent. My husband and I will be in our camper it will be the hub for the family gatherings."

Tips from RVers

Check-in procedures: Some properties offer advanced check-in options. One camper mentioned, "We did pre check in before we arrived and they set all our paperwork in the mail. This was great bc all we had to do was place the tag on our mirror and drive in."

Site selection strategies: Corner or end sites often provide more space. Cynthia D. from Myrtle Beach Travel Park advised, "Our campsite was perfect. It was under the trees and spacious. However we were on the main road and there was a constant flow of RV traffic the entire time."

Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts can affect site conditions. One visitor at Myrtle Beach KOA cautioned, "We happened to be there after a period of heavy rain and there were large puddles and some sites partially flooded, so there might be some drainage issues."

Hookup verification: Ensure connections work properly before setting up. Ransom J. warned about one property, "We had one of the ancient spots with shared power pole that we had to use converter to use the remaining 50amp. Feel sorry if you were a class A rig and needed the 50 and only had 40 left."
