    Pirateland Family Camping Resort

    Pros and cons

Pros- Friendly and helpful staff everywhere. Our sand and grass lot was level. We had nice neighbors all around us. Our family loved the pool and the kiddos couldn’t get enough of the pirate themed water park and lazy river. They have a well stocked store. A restaurant and game room. A food truck was also available daily. Easy access to the beach. The bathhouse was clean, well stocked and climate controlled.

Cons- We were all packed in snug like sardines. Traffic is busy always.

Little Pee Dee State Park Campground

A quiet and clean state park

Little Pee Dee State Park is a quiet and clean campground on the banks of Lake Norton. Locals often come here for fishing and non-motorized boating.  We were fortunate to witness a mass crayfish event--the recent flooding had brought them out of the swamp and up the spillway, much to the delight of seafood lovers.

The campground had two different campground hosts, and they kept the restrooms and campsites immaculately clean.

Campsites have a fire ring/grate and a picnic table, but no trash cans, and you'll need to bring your trash to a large bin located at the edge of the campsites.

There are some nice sites right at the edge of Lake Norton, but the abundant water plants don't allow you to fish from the side of the lake, and it's not really a swimming lake. These sites accommodate RVs and have water & electric.  If you're on a budget, there are tent-only sites off the water.

The campground recently built a sleeping cabin, which is a cute structure with air conditioning/heat, bunk beds, and a free-standing bed (the cabin sleeps four, total). Guests can use a fire ring and Adirondack chairs, hammock, and grill.

The park also has a nice shelter for use.

There is no WiFi here, and cellular internet is spotty. There isn't a camp store, but the Ranger Station does have ice, firewood, and a small number of souvenirs for sale.

    Ocean Lakes Family Campground

    Very Nice

Level sites with full hook-ups, some paved. Staff are polite and respectful. On-site security, potable water refill stations. Sites are reasonably spaced and the campground is next to the beach. Small store, ice cream parlor, and pizza restaurant that will deliver to your site. Events go on here often, like concerts, Halloween trick-or-treat, Christmas celebrations, Thanksgiving meals, etc. Quiet hours are perfect and enforced. Cannot beat the price on rv storage which is by the quarter, not monthly. Bathhouses are always clean. Have stayed there many times and love it. They even have a rv garage if you need work done.

    Pirateland Family Camping Resort

    Good for off season locals

The one thing that really bothered me was that they had dozens of people just riding around drinking beer and driving all day. Then they would just Cruz around drinking and driving at night? With dogs and babies ?

    Either way:

Bathrooms: 5/5 clean & air-conditioning in all of them.

    Sites: 3/5 just average/fine

Pools: 5/5 full on kids water park + Olympic pool + lazy river.

Food: 3/5 loads of options. Nothing good. They don't let Uber eats or DD come deliver and you have to meet them at the gate.

Closeness to other sites: 1/5 you are up each other's buttcracks

Dog rating: 4/5 no problem but also SO dog friendly we had to be very mindful of others not having their dogs on leash.

    Pirateland Family Camping Resort

    Fun beach party campground!

If you like party vibes, making friends with your neighbors, and staying up late for a drink, this campground rules.

We had a basic inland site with full hookups and a picnic table. The area where inland sites are located has a bunch of trees, we loved the shade and it was perfect for our 22 ft trailer, but I can see a big rig having some trouble navigating.

There’s a pool and a lazy river for when you want to switch it up from the beach, and a general store with camper equipment, souvenirs, and stocked with a lot of things you may have forgotten at home. Decent prices too, not slammin’ deals but didn’t feel like there was a huge mark up on anything. Though we have a shower/toilet in our trailer, the bath houses were a clean and air conditioned alternative. They all had outdoor showers and foot rinsing stations, which were super convenient when cleaning up after the beach.

The beach was beautiful, shallows for a couple hundred yards when the tide was out, and relatively clean for a busy beach. We brought our dog with us, so we could take him to the beach before 10AM and after 5PM. You’re supposed to have them on a leash all of the time, but we found a spot devoid of others and we’re able to let him go to play frisbee in the water. Very dog friendly campground, by the way.

Overall, we loved our time there and are even planning on coming back next year! Again, an awesome campground for outgoing folks looking for a beach party vibe. I would steer clear if you’re looking for something quiet and private.

    Ocean Lakes Family Campground

Lots of fun but loud and congested

This is a great campground. We have a 27’ trailer, a 9 yr old daughter and 12 yr old old son, and 2 boxers. This campground had everything we needed.

The water park/pool was awesome. My husband and I floated in the giant lazy river as our kids used the water slides and splash area. The lifeguard are great with the kids and super nice. The lifeguards in the splash pad area had a game of walking tag going on with all the kids. This helped break the ice between all the kids and my kids met alot of friends. Again, the lifeguards were super great with the kids. This area does not allow coolers but we bought a small soft sided cooler and it was never a problem. Alcohol is prohibited so we used aluminum reusable cups with lids to sneak in some alcohol. Everyone has these reusable cups all over the resort. So be like the jones and bring one. You can buy them at the store and they range from 10.99 - 40.00.

There was an area to walk the dogs. Although be careful of the older people who don’t leash their dog. The campground supplied clean up bags and trash cans all over the resort.

There is a small food area near the pool that offered great pizza, ice cream, chicken finger, etc. they will deliver to your campsite as long as it’s not raining. Call ahead if your going to pick up the food because the lines get long.

There is a food store that has every necessity you need from food to rv stuff.

Ok my favorite part of this trip. The wash and fold service. I dropped my clothes off at 830am and they were cleaned and ready for pickup by 1030am. Best part it only cost me 21.00. I dropped off a giant bag of clothes. If your not interested in someone else doing your laundry they have washers and dryers. A lot of them. There was always people there but there are so many machines I never noticed a problem getting laundry done.

They do activities for families. When we were they we went to the America bingo. They gave away small food prizes. The kids had fun and gave us something to do. They do give away prizes for best American dressed.

Be ready to see golf carts. Everyone here drives golf carts. There is actually golf cart traffic at night because there are so many golf carts. Really! People sit in traffic and high five each other as they go by. There is so much traffic that people set up chairs in the side of the road so they can watch the traffic. Not joking. It was a lot of fun watching the different golf carts go by. They are all decorated and the kids enjoyed seeing the light up ones. You can bring a golf cart or they rent them there.

outside the resort, there is a Walmart across the street that is more a food store then a Walmart. This Walmart offers food, alcohol, and a small necessity area. A bigger Walmart is about 15/20 minutes down the road.

The beach here is small but nice and clean. This area of the beach has lifeguards. Other resorts along this beach do not have lifeguards. Get up early and set up beach chairs. No one will take them and it will ensure you get a spot on the beach. We did this everyday. Some days we left our chairs on the beach and went to the pool and then went back to the beach later.

My only issue with this resort is the congestion. They squish the rvs and trailers in like sardines. There is enough room for your camper but your neighbors are right next to you. We had a campsite with a concrete pad and full hookups. The concrete pad was very nice to have because the sand was hard to keep up with. I couldn’t imagine how much sand there would have been in the camper if we were on sand. We have an outdoor rug and it was still bad.

Checkin: We did pre check in before we arrived and they set all our paperwork in the mail. This was great bc all we had to do was place the tag on our mirror and drive in. Nice and easy after a 9 hr drive there.

Noise: this place is noisy. Noise times are 7am- 11pm. The good thing about this is at 11pm everything is quiet. No one is on the roads. All golf carts go away and people settle down for the night.

Bathrooms: our lot was across from a bathroom. The bathrooms are clean. There are about 10 toilets and about 6 shower/ dressing areas. The bathrooms are cleaned several times a day and I never noticed a problem. The only problem I noticed was when the pumping truck came. They smelled for several hours but then it was gone.

Overall I would go back to this resort if I was in Myrtle beach.

    Pirateland Family Camping Resort

Get rid of your furried kids before entering!

It’s great how they pick up the trash.

    What I didn’t like,

ANYWAY THEY CAN MAKE MONEY OFF THEY WILL, including YOUR VISITORS, $3per day time, if they wanna stay $5.

    Mini golf costs.

One load of laundry will cost you $2, dryer $.25 for 6 minutes.

If you need to get a taxi, forget about it NO ONE is allowed on grounds without a pass.

Excessive barking of your puppy means your dog might bark for three minutes at the time. Leaving your dog in a fenced in area, while you have to use the facilities for number one( so what? About 2 minutes) is considered leaving your animal unsupervised.

Lawn WILL BE MOWED ON SUNDAYS, NO(!!!!!!!!) exceptions.

Pool is great, so is the lazy river.

Besides that the ground is old, it’s clean. Access to the Atlantic is great.

Mail will not be delivered, you have to sieve through your initials entire mail.

Quiet hours are enforced UNLESS someone starts packing up at 5.00 AM which will set your dog off and no matter that it is inside your trailer, it’s a reason to threaten you with eviction.

Best you get rid of the dog before you enter Pirateland.

Kids friendly. Youngsters seem to have fun at the splash pool. Playground seems to be deserted all the time.

Staff, cleaning and grounds keeping, is very friendly, while office won’t let you finish your sentences after paying up, nor are they willing to answer questions why breaking down a camp next to you at 5 AM loudly is okay.

Don’t attach Republican bumper stickers to your car, they’ll fall of the car at night.

The internet sucks, cable has moments when overloaded, but cell is great, so one may use personal hot spot as compensation.

Trailers also arrive at 21.00. No one can get setting up done in an hour until quiet time starts, but remember dogs aren’t allowed to bark if they hear ruckus outside.

If you ask me about my feelings, I felt like a prisoner, not being able to sleep in Monday’s, because I had to drive hubby to airport at 4 AM, due to his business trips and cabs can’t puck him up, I’m confined to the RV due to my dog barking, which had to be stopped even in your own trailer immediately.and yes, we were threatened with eviction.

Little Pee Dee State Park Campground

    Peaceful little park

After a full two days navigating down through the east coast cities, we landed at Little Pee Dee State park in South Carolina. The driveway is about two miles long, and is a beautiful road with tall pines and oak trees, both decorated with Spanish moss. We stopped at the ranger station to check in and were greeted by a friendly ranger who took our fee of I think only 20 dollers for a camp site. He gave us a park map and we proceeded to go set up camp. We chose a sweet site, not too far from the shower/commode house, but also nice and nestled in the trees. The park was very tidy and well cared for. After a good rest we woke up to birds a chirping and the smell of pines. Off to explore the trails. We found that the trails were easy to navigate. The camp sites are set up next to a large pond. From there the trails basically bring you on a trek around the pond. Many geese and birds are easy to spot as they enjoy the water. The trees are maintained so that they are not too thick. This allowed us to enjoy hunting for various flora. My overall impression of this park is of a well maintained and peaceful park. It is off the highway quite a bit, so the park is not overflowing with people. I would definitely go again.

Guide to Conway

Camping near Conway, South Carolina offers family-friendly options ranging from lakeside retreats to ocean-adjacent getaways, all within a short drive. Most campgrounds in the region remain open year-round, with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing in winter months and summer highs averaging 90°F with significant humidity. Several sites provide special accommodations including yurt camping around Conway, South Carolina, which combines canvas walls with solid flooring for a comfortable alternative to traditional tenting.

What to do

Fishing activities: 5 minutes from many campsites in the region, particularly at Willow Tree RV Resort where catch-and-release fishing is available on the property's lake. "Mile long paved path around the lake was great for walking or biking. Catch and release fishing too," reports one visitor who enjoyed the amenities.

Vineyard experiences: 35 miles from Conway at CarrollWoods RV Park at Grapefull Sisters Vineyard, where campers can participate in wine tastings between outdoor activities. "I visited the winery and the two women who own it are helpful and lively. If you visit, you must get one of their wine floats," recommends a guest who spent Memorial Day weekend at the property.

Water recreation: Multiple options available at several campgrounds, including River Island Adventures where water-based activities complement the camping experience. "This is a water adventure company that also has camping on the property. You can reserve a camp spot without signing up for any river activities, but camping does give you a little discount on activities if you do decide to rent a kayak or anything," explains one camper.

What campers like

Beach access: Under 15 minutes from Holden Beach RV Campground to shoreline. "We are only a few miles from the beach. The sites have full hook-up, fire pits, and picnic tables. Not a new place so lots of great trees for shade and to block the sea breeze," notes a visitor who appreciated the proximity to coastal recreation.

Private bathroom facilities: Several campgrounds feature individual bathroom units rather than communal restrooms. "The bath house has a private toilet, sink and shower- beautifully tiled and maintained," shares a Holden Beach RV Campground visitor, highlighting an amenity many campers prioritize.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Particularly at Huntington Beach State Park Campground where natural habitats remain protected. "Do not miss saying hi to the wildlife on your way in. The egrets, herons, and gators are a beautiful sight heading to the camp sites and beaches," recommends a regular visitor to the state park.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Book 6-12 months in advance for summer weekends at popular locations like Ocean Lakes Family Campground. "This is a massive campground! On average when school is out they have over 30,000 campers a day!! To accommodate they have a HUGE water park and countless other amenities," explains a visitor who noted the high-capacity operation.

Seasonal variations: Winter camping provides quieter experiences with temperatures typically in the 50-60°F range during days, while summer brings high humidity and daytime temperatures above 90°F.

Yurt accommodations near Conway: Available at several properties including Huntington Beach State Park and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park, offering solid flooring, canvas walls and convenient access to bathhouses.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Schedule around heat during summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 90°F. "The water park/pool was awesome. My husband and I floated in the giant lazy river as our kids used the water slides and splash area. The lifeguard are great with the kids and super nice," shares a parent who visited Ocean Lakes Family Campground.

Kid-friendly facilities: Multiple options at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Daddy Joe's, located about 45 minutes from Conway. "Laser Tag. Splash pad. Water slides. Indoor and outdoor pool. Playgrounds. Dog parks. Putt-Putt. Ice Cream. Fishing. Basketball. Volleyball. Horse shoes…and our kids did it all," reports a family that stayed during a storm.

Safety considerations: Most campgrounds maintain 24-hour security staff, particularly at larger facilities, with designated quiet hours typically from 11pm-7am.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Check specific dimensions before booking as some popular campgrounds have tighter spacing. "The sites are huge and along the lake where I camped, they are angled so that you don't really see much of your neighbors," notes a Willow Tree RV Resort camper, highlighting the benefit of more spacious sites.

Seasonal maintenance: Many RV parks perform infrastructure updates during winter months, with some facilities like pools closed during this period.

Concrete pad availability: Several campgrounds offer concrete pads which significantly reduce sand and debris tracking into campers. "Our lot was across from a bathroom. The bathrooms are clean. There are about 10 toilets and about 6 shower/dressing areas. The bathrooms are cleaned several times a day," observed a visitor to Ocean Lakes Family Campground, noting the maintenance standards.
