Camping options near McKeesport, Pennsylvania include a mix of established campgrounds and riverside sites along the Youghiogheny River. The area features several KOA campgrounds like Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA and Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA, which provide full-service camping with RV hookups, cabins, and tent sites. Dravo's Landing Campground offers free primitive camping along the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail, making it popular with cyclists and hikers. State parks within driving distance, including Raccoon Creek State Park and Keystone State Park, provide additional camping facilities with tent sites, RV accommodations, and cabin rentals.

Seasonal availability varies widely across the region, with many campgrounds operating from April through October. "We camped out overnight with a group of 14 people, and there was plenty of room for everyone to pitch their tents and spend a relaxing night under the stars," noted one visitor about Dravo's Landing. Trains passing throughout the night can affect sleep quality at campsites along the GAP trail, so earplugs are recommended. While some facilities remain open year-round, including Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA, winter camping requires preparation for cold temperatures. Most developed campgrounds require reservations, particularly for weekend stays during summer months, and many charge fees ranging from $25-90 per night depending on accommodation type and amenities.

Proximity to Pittsburgh makes these camping areas convenient for weekend getaways, with most sites located within 30-60 minutes of the city. Campers highlight the region's natural water features as major draws. Several visitors mentioned the appeal of riverside camping, particularly at Dravo's Landing where the Youghiogheny River provides both scenery and recreation. Campground facilities range from primitive sites with pit toilets to fully-developed resorts with swimming pools, laundry facilities, and camp stores. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, cleanliness varies significantly between properties, with some campgrounds maintaining spotless facilities while others show signs of deferred maintenance. Many campgrounds offer family-friendly amenities such as playgrounds, fishing ponds, and scheduled activities, though noise levels can be higher at these more developed facilities.

Coopers Rock State Forest- McCollum Campground

5 stars! Large lots, beautiful scenery, and nice campers

Coopers Rock State Park is an absolute gem and easily deserves 5 stars. The RV lots are large and easy to navigate, making setup stress-free and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and helpful, which made the whole stay even better. The new washrooms were clean, modern, and well maintained, and the scenery is breathtaking everywhere you look. It’s the perfect place to relax, enjoy nature, and take in the beautiful views.

Coopers Rock State Forest- McCollum Campground

      Beautiful and lush campground

This place is gorgeous and very quiet. The shower house and bathrooms were well maintained, and even had a laundry room and large sink around the back for dishes. Laundry costs $2 in quarters per load, 4 quarters for the washer and 4 quarters for the dryer. They are quick as well, took maybe an hour and 15 minutes all together. Campsites are spaced apart so you're not directly on top of eachother, but you can still see most of the other campers. Lots of trails in the area. We had electrical hook up and a lantern pole, and the is a dump and water station on the way in/out. Highly recommend this site.

      Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA

OK place to stay, work in progress

We've stayed here annually for 7 years. Getting into the RV sites is a steep climb, then you head down from the top of the hill to the RV sites.

The older portion has back in and pull through sites. They are medium to small in size, and due to their height and proximity to Interstates you hear trucks engine breaking. The newer section is lower (and quieter) and the sites are larger, but the gravel is not compacted so it sinks in when you drive, park or try to level your RV on it.

There were dog walking trails in the woods but they are so overgrown you need a machete to use them. The pool is nice and is clean. The camp store is not small but carries a very limited amount of supplies.

The staff are friendly. We've had RV issues and birds nesting under our slide room covers that they have helped us deal with.

      Cooper’s Rock Rocks

We are here a couple days . Staff and facilities are great. Lots of hiking trails of various types and lengths. June 9 and only 2 other RVs on our loop. The “new” loop has great single occupancy bath facilities.

Kentuck Campground — Ohiopyle State Park

      Fantastic wooded campground

We LOVED our visit to Kentuck campground and Ohiopyle. We went mid-week in early June and had very few neighbors Tuesday and Wednesday, with more rolling in toward the end of the week.

We stayed on Hickory Loop with our dog and saw quite a few other dogs while we were there. Not all sites are equal at this campground - ours was huge and lovely with adequate flattish area and a stream running along two sides of it. Others were quite small and not very level. I think we had one of the best sites on the loop, with great trees for hammocks and big rocks nearby, as well as good privacy from other sites.

The campground is very shaded and was regularly several degrees cooler than elsewhere in the park, which was great to home 'home' to. There's a lot of poison ivy in the area, so be watchful.

Firewood is available for purchase on entrance to the campground.

The bathhouse was relatively clean, with a large kitchen sink for washing dishes, three toilet stalls, and two shower stalls. We never had to wait for any of it.

      Buttercup Woodlands Campground

      Very well maintained! 🛀🫧🧹

I’m really impressed with this campground. Everything is very well maintained—clean, tidy, and organized. The staff and other campers are friendly, and there’s a welcoming atmosphere overall. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy, a great pool, and the sites are spacious and comfortable. They even have what I’d consider professional-grade cornhole boards that look like they’re made from concrete or a similar solid material—really well built and a nice touch. It’s been a very enjoyable and relaxing place to stay.

      Keystone State Park Campground

Classic campground in the woods of Pennsylvania

This campground's foliage is interesting, I saw fernes growing and trees that looked older than me. I also noticed the campground has some history shown by the rust of the firepits. There is Billy's Pizza and general store which sells firewood if you go a little further down the road that maps takes you and take the second left instead of taking the first left. I think the campground also sells firewood on site. You can order Billy's Pizza and I saw them deliver to the campsites, which is amazing, havent seen that before. I'm a light sleeper and could hear truck engine braking sounds echo through the forest from the nearby highway, so the proximity to the road ruins the feeling of seclusion and the quiet. There's a restroom with a large sink outside which is nice.

Kentuck Campground — Ohiopyle State Park

      My favorite place to camp

I come here at least twice a year for the wonder campground. The hiking trails, water falls and white water rafting. The town is small but filled with tons of great shops and outfitters. Campground is clean, every sight is nice and spacious, not all are private. Get gas on your way here, once here their are no gas stations for 40 minutes in every direction. Ice and wood at campground suck. Go into town for ice or see Butch out rt 381 on the left just outside the park boundary. Highly recommended.

    What to do

Bike the Great Allegheny Passage trail: Access Dravo's Landing Campground for overnight stays along the 150-mile rail-trail connecting Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. "Free bike-in camp site with water access along the Youghiogheny River. Access from the Allegheny Gap trail. There were a few shelters, nice campsite," notes one cyclist.

Swimming and fishing: Multiple campgrounds offer water recreation from May through September. At Fox Den Acres Campground, children find success fishing in the stocked pond. "We did watch kids fishing and pulling fish out as soon as they put their line in!! So much fun for them," shares one visitor.

Scenic mountain views: Fall colors peak in October when hillsides display vibrant reds and yellows. "We arrived at 9 PM, and sure enough he was there ready with his little ranger golf cart to escort us to our site! Fall was in full effect and it was AMAZINGLY beautiful!!" writes a Mountain Top Campground visitor.

White water rafting: The Youghiogheny River offers class I-IV rapids depending on section and water levels. "Great place to go white water rafting!!!" says a camper at Kentuck Campground in Ohiopyle State Park.

    What campers like

Budget-friendly options: Free primitive camping provides riverside access and basic amenities. "We camped out overnight with a group of 14 people, and there was plenty of room for everyone to pitch their tents and spend a relaxing night under the stars," reports a visitor about The GAP Trail Campground.

Modern bathhouse facilities: Several campgrounds maintain quality shower facilities. "What a treat! Imagine if a luxury AirBnB and a Hobbit Camp had a baby – this place would be it. The outdoor shower/toilet block is such a divine sight, it makes you crave one whether you're stinky or not," describes one cyclist about The GAP Trail Campground.

Spacious tent sites: Many campgrounds offer well-maintained grassy areas for tent camping. "Each site was very spacious and well shaded. Fire ring and table at each sight. Restroom were a short walk away," notes a Fox Den Acres camper.

Year-round accessibility: While most campgrounds operate April-October, several remain open during winter months. "We're staying in the winter for a few nights to visit friends who live outside Pittsburgh. Friendly and cozy spot. They've done a great job in the winter despite the frigid weather by using heat tape on the spigots," shares a winter visitor at Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA.

    What you should know

Train noise affects sleep: Railroad tracks parallel many campgrounds along the GAP trail, creating noise disturbances. "One thing to consider with these campgrounds next to the trail is the number of trains that pass by in the night. It's not the train horn but the number of turns in the track and the squealing breaks that keep you up – so bring good earplugs if you hope to sleep!" advises a Dravo's Landing camper.

Limited grocery options: Most areas require advance meal planning. "Plan your meals well, before arriving. There are a couple of restaurants in Ohiopyle, but they are not open late. There are no grocery stores real close," warns a visitor at Kentuck Campground — Ohiopyle State Park.

Hillside terrain challenges: Many campgrounds feature uneven sites on mountain slopes. "Although the campground is close to several large cities, it is very relaxed, wooded, and quiet. We weren't to sure what to expect as we usually camp in much more remote areas, but we enjoyed the park very much," notes a Mountain Top camper.

Limited cell service: Coverage varies widely between carriers. "Verizon service is great. Wifi in extended parking doesn't work well," reports a Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA visitor staying monthly.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground availability: Not all campgrounds offer children's play areas. "The only downsides at this site (which are really not downsides for anyone else without kids) are: 1. There is no playground or activities for children," notes one family at Mountain Top Campground.

Kid-friendly water features: Swimming options range from pools to natural lakes. "This is a very nice campground. They provide activities almost every evening, making sure everything age range is catered to throughout the week," shares a Fox Den Acres visitor.

Nature exploration for children: Many sites offer child-friendly hiking trails and outdoor education. "My wife has been going to keystone all her life, I've only gone since she and I started dating. I've been all over the world hiking and camping, but keystone is nostalgic for her. And it's a great place for our one year old to cut his teeth in the great outdoors!! He loves going and love camping!!" explains a visitor at Keystone State Park Campground.

Pack food securely: Wildlife frequently visits campsites seeking food. "Just be sure to secure your food overnight - if you don't, the raccoons will make quick work of it!" warns a Dravo's Landing visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Laundry facilities: Some campgrounds offer industrial-sized washers and dryers. "Laundry facilities are the best we have encountered. Big machines and dryers making life easier and less time spent doing laundry," notes a Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA visitor.

Grey water disposal options: Alternative systems exist at some campgrounds without full hookups. "Since they sit atop the mountain, the grey water hookup is a long hose that has an adapter which hooks up to your black and grey tank outlet and it runs down the hillside of the mountain into the grassy area," explains a Mountain Top Campground visitor.

Navigation challenges: Narrow roads and steep terrain require careful driving. "Follow the signs to the campground NOT the GPS in order to avoid some narrow and sharp turn roads," advises a Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA visitor.

Winter RV considerations: Heated water connections allow for winter camping. "Nice quiet campground with lots of sites. Sitting in a valley the site go up the hillside. Good amenities, pool and bathroom/showers," shares a Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA visitor.
