What campers like
Swimming spots: River access with caution at Waterloo County Park where current conditions vary seasonally. "Great little spot for a family get together and overnight stay... On the river good fishing... but be aware... current is swift.. swimmers seem to get in trouble every year here," warns one visitor.
Waterfall hiking: Multiple trails near Silver Falls State Park Campground ranging from 0.5 to 9 miles with varying difficulty. "THE most beautiful park in Oregon that we've seen! Hiked for 5 hours! BEWARE: It's WET, so bring your wet weather gear, and good, sturdy hiking shoes for slippery terrain," advises a camper.
Garden exploration: Secret garden area with walking paths at Belknap Hot Springs Lodge and Gardens. "Right off the site loop is the McKenzie River Trail, spanning over 20miles, beautiful for exploring on foot or bike. I didn't go over the bridge to the lodge gardens myself but my parents enjoyed them," mentions one visitor.
What you should know
Seasonal limitations: Water levels fluctuate at Green Peter Reservoir, affecting boat launch accessibility at Whitcomb Creek County Park. "Recently updated/added onto Whitcomb has no pager or water. Lots of tall tree's for shade and hammocks. Park has a boat launch for access to green peter reservoir. Good fishing and water skiing," explains a camper.
Spacing considerations: Site proximity varies significantly between campgrounds. "The sites are spaced out nicely and the park is very quiet," notes a camper at Waterloo County Park, while another mentions, "Sites by the River should be the premier spots. Zero space or privacy between them," at Belknap Hot Springs.
Noise factors: Road noise affects some campgrounds more than others. "There is a lot of road traffic sound around the campground due to freeways being close," notes a visitor to Albany-Corvallis KOA, while quieter options include campgrounds further from major highways.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Kid-friendly areas at Silver Falls State Park Campground include dedicated playgrounds within camping loops. "Kids' play area inside Loop B, showers, and nature trails around the campground... I'd try to reserve spots 9 or 12 (next to the playground and sunny spots) or 72 (next to the creek in the shade) next time!" recommends a family camper.
Swimming safety: Current conditions at Waterloo County Park require supervision for children. "Waterloo is pretty open and has some bike trails and some parks and a pretty great disc golf course! The water is really cold but perfect for a day outside or a picnic with the kids!" notes one visitor.
Weather preparation: Rain gear needed even during summer months at some locations. "We camped in Mid June and were 1 of 3 sites occupied. The campground was extremely clean and quiet," reports a family at Whitcomb Creek County Park, while another mentions "BEWARE: It's WET" at Silver Falls.
