"Home of the annual Beaver State Fling, a PDGA sanctioned National Tour event, Milo McIver is an excellent host for the international players that come to the Pacific Northwest for a chance to win the tournament," notes Steve C.
Hiking historical trails: At Champoeg State Heritage Area Campground, visitors can walk a three-mile trail to Butteville Store. "I walked the path around the entire park, which took me about 3 hours. Along the way got to see the Champoeg Heritage site with period piece actors, wide open spaces, and the Willamette River," shares Ashley B.
Kayaking and fishing: Waterloo County Park provides river access with designated areas for safety. "Great little spot for a family get together and overnight stay... On the river good fishing... but be aware... current is swift.. swimmers seem to get in trouble every year here," warns Len S.
Explore historical landmarks: The Champoeg Heritage site features actors in period costume demonstrating pioneer life. "The farmhouse fascinated my boys... they got to water the garden with a water pump and buckets!" writes Leslie C.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Silver Falls State Park Campground maintains high standards for its amenities. "Awesome campground. Well maintained. Site spacing is good with lots of privacy between camps. Bathrooms and showers are super nice and clean. Roads and campsites are paved and level," reports Richard H.
River access: Many campgrounds offer direct water access for recreation. "The campground is very well laid out and there are plenty of hiking and biking trails right from your campsite. The hosts are super friendly and helpful," shares Thamar D. about Champoeg State Park.
Biking trails: Multiple campgrounds feature dedicated cycling paths. "Champoeg State Park is on the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, and a great place to camp if you want to do a long biking getaway... Biking the loop to St. Paul is a fun countryside ride," Stephanie Z. explains.
Family activities: Camp Dakota offers numerous structured activities. "We had a great time at Camp Dakota. Our yurt was comfortable and we enjoyed disc golf, archery, axe throwing, a fun general store and an escape room. We came in thinking it was a little on the spendy side, to ending up thinking it was a bargain," notes Bjorn S.
What you should know
Winter flooding: Some campgrounds experience seasonal issues. "If you plan on booking a trip in the late Fall/winter, be sure to call ahead of your trip. I've been here in the fall when more than half the campsites were flooded or filled with standing water," advises Blake F. about Devil's Lake State Recreation Area Campground.
Cell coverage varies: Connectivity can be limited at certain locations. "Barely got 1 bar of 4g at the welcome center. There's a guest wifi in the parking lot there too but it's 2 miles further to the camp ground and texts hardly go through," reports Zach S. about Oxbow Regional Park.
Site privacy: Campground layouts differ significantly. "Since you're in the valley, the campground is mostly just flat land with very little tree cover. You'll definitely be able to see your neighbors whether you're in the tent or rv area," notes Stephanie Z. about Champoeg State Park.
Reservation requirements: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially for glamping close to Keizer, Oregon. "I stayed in the 1 of 5 tent spaces. They were a bit close to the other sites, but still large enough for a few tents if needed... I would recommend this place, just make reservations early," advises Ashley B.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. "Loop B is highly our favorite because it is smaller and more private and close to the river. We'll go back year after year. Our kids had a blast!" reports Scott W. about Champoeg State Park.
Adventure activities: Some sites offer structured activities for various ages. "We did a group site and once we got the wristbands on the kids, they went off and explored and had a lot of fun. The staff is #1 safe, then #2 they are super fun," Jason S. shares about Camp Dakota.
Swimming safety: Monitor water activities carefully. "There was a huge playground for the kids. There was also a large field area for dogs to roam around, just no fence," notes Ashley B., while Len S. cautions, "current is swift.. swimmers seem to get in trouble every year here" at Waterloo County Park.
Off-season considerations: Weather impacts facility availability. "Spring and summer can be a bug challenge so bring lots of insect repellant!" advises C.W. about Champoeg State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site dimensions: Premier RV Resort near Salem has limitations to consider. "We are full-timers in a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow. We were in site 57 for 4 days in mid September. Very friendly staff. The CG is clean, quiet and well maintained, but the sites are fairly short and narrow," Ray & Terri F. explain.
Utility connections: Some parks have infrastructure quirks. "The sewer connections are not threaded, so you'll have to weigh down your sewer hose," notes Ray & Terri F. about Premier RV Resort.
Winter accessibility: Luxury camping options remain available year-round. "The spots were level, no fire rings only a few picnic tables but caters to RVs only so most of us have tables and chairs. The bathrooms/showers were very clean and well cared for," reports Tim G. about Emerald Valley RV Park.
Internet connectivity: Network quality varies considerably. "AT&T coverage was fair, ranging from 2-4 bars of 5G with speeds up to 19 MB/s. The CG WiFi speed varied considerably, from next to useless up to 1 MB/s," shares Ray & Terri F.
