Little Axe — Lake Thunderbird State Park

      Great State Park in Oklahoma

We had a great stay in Lake Thunderbird State Park near Norman Oklahoma. The park has 11 campground areas situated around the 6000 acre centerpiece lake with many tent, RV sites and some of those have full hook up; our choice was the Little Ax campground on the southern end just off Oklahoma 9. In addition to water activities the park offers hunting, horse rental and boarding, equestrian trails, hiking, mountain biking, nature trails, a nature center, and an archery range. Our lakefront site#37 was nice and shaded with a gentle lake breeze offering a concrete pad, water, 30/15 amp electric, concrete table, lantern holder, fire ring and grill at site. The campground has an entry station, camp host, picnic shelters, playground, bathhouse and laundry, beach area, common fire pit, Verizon 4 bars, dump station, trash receptacles, interior roads are paved, with many sites waterfront. RV sites are close quarters. Tent sites are amazing...pads, concrete table, fire ring, grill, water spigot dispersed, waterfront sites. The town of Norman has all the amenities: shopping, dining, groceries, fuel and yes, Walmart. The area is home to local wineries and breweries and also the hometown to actor James Garner. WARNING: Oklahoma State Parks charge a daily parking fee per vehicle of$10 in addition to the camping fee and they enforce it...just saying from experience...read the information carefully! 13101 Alameda Dr, Norman, OK 73026 GPS- 35.234940,-97.219224 for the Little Ax Campground.

      Bell Cow Lake Campground C

      Very Peaceful & Not Crowded

Campground C area offers many pull through RV sites and some back-in RV sites, all with electric & water hook ups. There is also equestrian RV sites with pens, tent camping with shared water spigots, primitive tent camping and a dump station. There are miles of equestrian trails. Hiked down one and the trail was very peaceful and beautiful. It had recently rained a lot, so I had a thick layer of red mud on my shoes from the hike, but glad I hiked it. There are bathrooms with showers, a swim beach, a volleyball court, pavilions, a boat ramp, and plenty of wildlife. Lake is calm & shallow, so it is best for small boats and kayaks. There were plenty of flies due to the time of year and the presence of horses, so a good fly swatter and a fly trap is recommended. Found a small cemetery on the drive to the campsite with some very old grave sites. In all, it was a great place to escape from the real world and relax.

      Lake Carl Blackwell

One of the very cleanest I have stayed at.

The amenities were very clean, some being very new. Multiple new dump stations in each area. Bathrooms were very clean. Most all campsites are right on the water. Beautiful campground. Offers Equestrian trails, hiking trails, and bicycling trails. Our favorite in-state campground.

      Rockwell RV Park

      Nice friendly park

Stayed here 2 nights this May. The location is good for access to Oklahoma City attractions. It is right off the interstate so the usual highway noise but not terrible. Free coffee and muffins every morning. Bathouses were very clean and well kept. Didnt look at them but there are Buffalo there in a pen. A lot of workers stay there but not a problem. Cable was included but didn't work for us or our neighbor. You can get lots of local air channels though.

Stay with some friends here for a festival in Oklahoma City. The campground was easy to find and very close to Oklahoma City but it was dirty and the fire in the fire pit was still going from the people that have been there the night before.

      Central State Park Campground

      Peaceful setting

Nice location just outside the city of Oklahoma City. Pretty peaceful by the Arcadia Lake. You can hear the roadways nearby and sometimes an airport but the crickets and frogs are nice at night Bathrooms are mid. Dark sort of clean but just old. Shower has great pressure but again old and dark and you can’t change the mild temperature. Plus a very large spider was found!
Cell service version and att good. Water spigots at various locations around the park Sites are fairly level. People need to clean up after themselves. I find it disgusting that people call themselves outdoors men when they smoke leaving their cigarette butts on the ground a long with other trash around their campsites. Leave it Better Than you found it! Please stop littering there is not anyone else to clean up after you. I’ll get off my soap box. Thanks for listening.

      Lake Carl Blackwell

      Relaxing time

We reserve two sites side by side in the beaver cove campground. The sites are on a slight decline but pull through and we were able to make them level with our blocks. The sides have enough room for the grandkids to roam around it besides for electric and water only but offered a view of the lake and we're close by a swim area. The trees at the sides provided adequate shade for the afternoon sun and the campground offered boat ramps couple of swim areas and on-site store for gas and supplies including and after hours vending machine with propane tanks and charcoal and s'mores supplies. The dump station provided slots for three RVs at one time and well thought out. The crap ground offers hiking bicycle and horse trails that cover a large area. Wildlife was abundant with plenty of deer and Canadian geese and squirrels. The campgrounds offer some annual sites for long-term visits but there is a waiting list to be on that.

      Central State Park Campground

Great campsite, but a pain to get set up

I’ve stayed here twice now, and I love the rural, rougher campsites. This area is much more wooded than Thunderbird, and the views of the lake are obstructed by trees, so don’t expect to get a lake view in front of your tent. Payment sucks, as you have to shove money into an envelope at the entrance and is just a hassle. The City of Edmond could improve this by allowing reservations online just like the Oklahoma State Parks.

    Guide to Warr Acres

Equestrian campgrounds near Warr Acres, Oklahoma provide multiple opportunities for riders seeking space to camp with their horses. The central Oklahoma region features red-clay terrain across rolling hills with elevations ranging from 1,140 to 1,300 feet. Most horse-friendly campgrounds maintain trail access throughout spring and fall, with closures typically occurring during heavy rainfall when clay soil becomes slick and easily damaged.

    What to do

Trail riding at Lake Carl Blackwell: Located about 55 miles north of Warr Acres, this lake owned by Oklahoma State University offers multiple equestrian trails. "Lake Carl Blackwell has plenty of multi-use trails however, there is no of trail camping. These results are for day hikes only. Great for kids and getting them started in hiking or as a training ground for longer hikes. The trails are well maintained," notes Daniel R. in his review of Lake Carl Blackwell.

Swimming with horses: At several locations, including Lake Thunderbird, riders can access designated water entry points for horses. "This area is quieter and less popular than area 'C', but it is a little bit more rustic. There is an older bathroom facility in the center of the RV camping area," writes Christine N. about Bell Cow Lake Campground C.

Wildlife observation: Many equestrian trails near Warr Acres pass through areas with abundant wildlife. "We had a blast camping at Arcadia. While it's close to the city, it feels far away. Lake activities and hiking are available," explains Angela H., highlighting how accessible nature remains even near urban areas.

    What campers like

Ample space for trailers: Horse campgrounds provide larger sites designed specifically for equestrian use. "The campground has an entry station, camp host, picnic shelters, playground, bathhouse and laundry, beach area, common fire pit, Verizon 4 bars, dump station, trash receptacles, interior roads are paved, with many sites waterfront," writes Stephen & Theresa B. about their experience at Little Axe — Lake Thunderbird State Park.

Dedicated equestrian facilities: Bell Cow Lake Campground C features specialized equestrian amenities. "There is also equestrian RV sites with pens, tent camping with shared water spigots, primitive tent camping and a dump station. There are miles of equestrian trails. Hiked down one and the trail was very peaceful and beautiful," explains Leslie N.

Affordable camping options: Most campgrounds near Warr Acres maintain reasonable fees for equestrian camping. "Tent camping is $10 a night, RV is $20... Bell Cow lake may become one of our go to places as it is still within an easy drive from OKC and half the price of the next closest lake to camp at (Lake Arcadia)," notes Jon B.

    What you should know

Trail conditions vary seasonally: Clay soil in central Oklahoma creates challenges during wet weather. "It had recently rained a lot, so I had a thick layer of red mud on my shoes from the hike, but glad I hiked it," reports Leslie N. about Bell Cow Lake trails.

Insect preparation required: Horse areas often have more insects than standard camping. "There were plenty of flies due to the time of year and the presence of horses, so a good fly swatter and a fly trap is recommended," warns Leslie N. at Bell Cow Lake.

Campsite availability fluctuates: Weekends often fill quickly at popular campgrounds. "We stayed in Camp Area B, Friday night there were a handful of RV spots still available and we were the only tent campers. Saturday a few more tent campers arrived but there was still open sites between us," Jon B. notes about Bell Cow Lake.

    Tips for camping with families

Site selection matters: Choose locations with amenities suited for children. "This is a very clean camping area, one of the number one spots locals go to swim. The bathrooms could use updating but for the price this place was great. The camping areas were very well shaded it came with electric, water and a fire ring," writes Julie H. about Bell Cow Lake.

Water activities: Many equestrian campgrounds offer swimming beaches. "Lake is calm & shallow, so it is best for small boats and kayaks," explains Leslie N. at Bell Cow Lake, noting the safer water conditions for younger swimmers.

Playground availability: Some campgrounds feature play areas for children. "The tent area is on the water with water access through the grass along the shoreline. Swimming was great with a sand bottom once you got past the grass along the shoreline," Jon B. mentions at Bell Cow Lake.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Most horse-friendly campgrounds provide electric and water connections. "Water hook up and 30 amp. We stayed in 'Area B,' Campsite #4. Several shady spots. Easy water access," Christine N. notes about Bell Cow Lake.

Dump station locations: Locate waste facilities before arrival. "The dump location is near the restrooms by the boat dock. It's a little hidden," warns Christine N. about Bell Cow Lake's somewhat concealed sanitation facilities.

Equestrian-specific RV areas: Some campgrounds separate horse campers from general camping. "Campground C area offers many pull through RV sites and some back-in RV sites, all with electric & water hook ups. There is also equestrian RV sites with pens," Leslie N. explains about the dedicated facilities.
