Winter temperatures can drop below freezing, making early fall and late spring the most comfortable camping seasons.
What to Do
Fishing opportunities: Lake Thunderbird offers catfish, bass, and crappie fishing. "The surrounding area includes a quiet cove for fishing, good beaches and lake access," notes Tracy C. about Little Axe Campground.
Mountain biking trails: The park features multiple trail systems for different skill levels. "We rode our bikes over from Little Ax to ride the bike trails. No one there except the campground hosts but we explored the campground and area. Very nice. Lots and lots of trails including and unmarked but paved trail," writes Teresa T. about South Dam - Lake Thunderbird State Park.
Swimming beaches: Designated swimming areas provide summer recreation. "There is a designated swimming area in the campgrounds. Beautiful, wooded park with large lake that has a section for watersports and fishing," explains Noelle H. from Little Axe Campground.
What Campers Like
Peninsula camping spots: Sites positioned on small peninsulas provide excellent views. "Nice little peninsula, watched the sun come up over the water. Quiet and flat camp spot," says Jay F. about Little Axe Campground.
Clean facilities: Regular maintenance keeps amenities in good condition. "Bathrooms & showers were like new & very clean. Camp host nice," reports Christle C. about Little Axe area.
Staggered site layout: Sites designed for privacy between camping groups. "Went from Thursday to Sunday! Thursday camp was very chilly rest of the time wasn't to bad, but kinda windy! Nice views of lake & dam. Sandy beach area, sandy & walkable around lakes edge," adds Christle C.
What You Should Know
No dedicated horse facilities: For equestrians seeking horse campgrounds near Noble, Oklahoma, Lake Thunderbird doesn't provide specific equestrian facilities. Nearby Soggy Bottom Trails & Campground offers alternatives with "120 Acres to explore...Many local trails to explore or hop in the river," according to Ashley F.
Daily parking fees: Oklahoma State Parks charge additional vehicle fees. "WARNING: Oklahoma State Parks charge a daily parking fee per vehicle of $10 in addition to the camping fee and they enforce it...just saying from experience...read the information carefully!" advises Stephen & Theresa B.
Water quality considerations: The lake water isn't always clear. "I'll be honest, this was probably my least favorite place we camped that summer. It's just not a very pretty lake, it's dirty, a lot of people just come here to party it seems like," mentions Kelly Z.
Tips for Camping with Families
Playground access: Little Axe area provides play equipment for children. "Other sites have loud parties and such… Little Axe is nice for families and quieter groups. Also, it's a peninsula by the dam, there's a quiet cove for fishing, good beaches and lake access, a play gym for kiddos and clean bathrooms," explains Tracy C. from South Dam - Lake Thunderbird State Park.
Space for group activities: Sites accommodate multiple tents for family gatherings. "Came with a group of four had plenty of room to for all tents and to make a fire," says Lani H.
Consider fall visits: Seasonal changes enhance the camping experience. "We visited in October when the leaves were changing and it was so beautiful. The lake is great. Bring your fishing gear. Site spacing is good. Typical amenities for a state park," recommends Kelly B.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for lake views: Choose waterfront sites for the best experience. "This was a back in site right on the water. We looked at some other areas where you were so far from the water you wouldn't even know you were at a lake. The site was level and had a nice picnic table out near the water," shares Jil S.
Electric hookup availability: Multiple campgrounds offer powered sites. "If you have a 30 amp rv/camper you can get a spot at one of the 3 decent Thunderbird parks most of the time same day no reservation. If you have a 50 amp better go parkit on Thursday so you have a weekend spot," advises Nicholas L. about South Dam - Lake Thunderbird State Park.
Site reservation timing: Plan ahead for busy periods. "You must make your reservations in advance online. We highly recommend this park," notes Kelly B.
