Pawhuska Lake (Old City Lake) Dispersed

    Nice but overgrown.

It’s an ok campground. It looks like it hasn’t been mowed at all this year. Some of the sites would be hard to get to with all the tall grass. I camped on the back part and it was easy enough to get to. The toilets are just OK. One has the water level pretty high so I wouldn’t use that but the other one would be OK. I’m here in July and nobody else is here.

    Lake Ponca Campgrounds

    Trashy looking camp area

Not appealing whatsoever. Small, and usually has some people in there that leave messes and stare a lot

    Coon Creek Cove

    Coon creek campground

The campsites are nice and there is some open space. BUT every time we've camped there there are dogs barking, kids free roaming causing ruckus, people drunk and constantly playing loud music. This is why we like dispersed campers better. The last time we went someone came into my campsite and stole my cell phone.

    Bear Creek Cove

    Off the beaten path

Although you will travel the countryside and down a gravel road, you will enjoy the quiet and lovely grounds that Neal takes such good care of. When we were there, the lake was 27 ft. above its limits, with much tree debris in the lake. So, we didn't fish. However, you can see where the grounds keeper mowed paths to where the lake would have been. You will enjoy Bear Creek Cove. Grounds has its own dumpstation. Trash. Playground. Showers and public toilets. Water and electricity hookups. Grills and covered and uncovered picnic tables.

    Lake McMurtry West Campground

    Awesome camp + internet access

We got lost on the way and went to East instead and met a friendly lady who gave my pup a treat! Pretty rough roads but my little car handled just fine. Went west and a got set up at a nice campsite. Had a picnic table and water sprout and a trail right down to the water.

Pawhuska Lake (Old City Lake) Dispersed

    A free place to camp

This is the old city lake outside of Pawhuska. It is not Bluestem Lake (Bluestem is a couple miles north). The Old city lake is smaller and quieter and has no improvements beyond a few picnic tables and a toilet only the desperate would consider using. To reach the camping area you drive across the damn to the west boat dock area. There is a dirt road/trail that heads up to a few camping spots. Most of the camping areas have been abandoned to time but some of them are still maintained. The lake is a no wake lake and is great for kayaking. They used to stock it with trout. Near the east boat ramp is a pretty cool table top rock feature. Below the damn you can find a trail and some bluffs that are fun to explore. On top of the bluffs is an old abandoned camping area.

    Napawalla Park

    Nice and quiet

The campground have 30 and 50 AMP hook ups, and water. The dump station is by the entry, the have a playground, disk golf course shelters, volleyball and basketball courts. Nice and quiet located on the side of the town. The bathroom where close i assume they will open later in the season. I didn’t see anyone, but they have cameras at the entrance. Caseys gas station in a walking distance from the campground. And the best is only $15 a night. $10 just to dump and only $3.50 for primitive camping.

    Cowely county fishing lake

    Great for moto camping

Throughout the day, there was about three people fishing. It felt like I had the place to myself. I’m not sure if it was because it’s just March and nothing’s quite green yet, but the lake was peaceful.

At the time I was there, the waterfall was dried up and I was able to take a trail down to the bottom and see everything up close

I like to rate all of my campgrounds whether I would or wouldn’t camp there again and I can’t wait to take some friends there

    Lake Carl Blackwell

    Winter retreat

My husband and I rented a little cabin for an anniversary getaway. Cabin was clean, and grounds were well kept. We called for fresh bedding, and they were happy to help. The bed was large and comfy, and pillows were soft. There is a t.v., kitchenette, and bathroom with shower. We went in January, so there were no crowds.

The camping season typically runs from spring through fall, with Lake Ponca Campgrounds operating year-round. Temperatures in the region range from summer highs in the 90s to winter lows in the 20s, creating distinct seasonal camping experiences.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Coon Creek Cove, the cove attracts pelicans early in the morning and provides good fishing conditions. "Get up early and watch the pelicans come in to the cove... Good fishing," notes Christine N. in her review.

Hiking the Eagle View Trail: The trailhead is located at Osage Cove, providing access to natural terrain. "Osage cove also includes the southern trailhead for the Eagle View Trail," according to Nate C., who spent spring at the campground.

Wildlife viewing: The prairie dog colonies near Kaw Lake dam attract campers interested in wildlife observation. The area also hosts bald eagles during certain seasons. "You can pull over and watch them. Sometimes you see bald eagles," mentions a visitor to the area.

What campers like

Lakefront access: Many sites at McFadden Cove offer direct water views. "It's on the water and beautiful... there were several spots $18.00 per night includes electric and water," reports Deanna S. about this first-come, first-served campground.

Quiet weekday camping: Weekdays provide a more secluded experience at many Kaw Lake campgrounds. "Weekdays are awesome, but can get crowded on holiday weekends," says Nate C. about his stay at Osage Cove.

New facilities: Some camping areas feature updated amenities. Joyce R. notes about Lake Ponca Campgrounds: "New restrooms/showers and electric RV sites with shared water for $25. Park RV on asphalt facing campsite."

What you should know

Reservation systems vary: Some campgrounds require advance booking through Recreation.gov, while others operate on a first-come basis. "On the site Recreation.gov, it says you cannot reserve a spot. It's first come first serve," explains Deanna S. about McFadden Cove.

Firewood availability: Plan to bring your own firewood as it's not sold at most campgrounds. "No firewood to buy on premises so pick it up in the near town of Ponca City if you want to light a fire," advises Jim H. from Sarge Creek.

Bathroom facilities: Quality of facilities varies significantly between campgrounds. At Sarge Creek, one camper noted: "They have a brand new shower house, but it is very nasty and ill maintained. No place to put your clean clothes without getting them wet."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Families with children can utilize the playground facilities at several campgrounds. "Playground, boat ramp, no beach or swim area," reports Christine N. about the amenities at Coon Creek Cove.

Consider noise levels: Some campgrounds experience more noise than others, particularly on weekends. "Every time we've camped there there are dogs barking, kids free roaming causing ruckus, people drunk and constantly playing loud music," warns Tyler S. about weekend conditions.

Private beach options: For families seeking water access away from the main lake areas, The Sandbur RV Park offers alternative facilities. "Nice wooded walking trail with access to a private lake beach front," notes John L. in his review.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for water views: RVers recommend specific sites for the best experience. "Camp spot 9 and 11 are the closest to the water," advises Julie H. about Washunga Bay, a popular spot for boaters.

Hookup information: Electric and water hookups are available at most established campgrounds, but placement varies. One camper at Osage Cove explains: "There is no water hookup, unless you have a long hose & are close to any of the bathrooms."

Seasonal availability: Bear Creek Cove operates from April 1 to October 31, with different seasonal restrictions at other campgrounds. Washunga Bay has a shorter season, running only from May 1 to September 15.
