Best Cabin Camping near Westerville, OH

Rustic cabin rentals near Westerville include options at Alum Creek State Park and Cross Creek Camping Resort, both offering electric hookups and basic furnishings. Delaware State Park Campground provides cabin accommodations with varying levels of amenities, from simple sleeping quarters to more equipped units with kitchenettes. Cardinal Center Campground features cabins located near shower facilities and restrooms, making them convenient for families. Buckeye Lake-Columbus East KOA offers cabin rentals with bunk bed arrangements and separate sleeping areas. "The KOA cabins were lovely. The design is nice as the bunk beds are in their own separate room. This means the back room will sleep four individuals," noted one visitor.

Cabin types vary significantly across the region's campgrounds. KOA locations offer their standard "Kabin" models, while state parks typically provide more rustic accommodations. Most cabins require advance reservations, particularly during summer months when availability becomes limited. Pet policies differ by location, with some cabins designated as pet-friendly while others prohibit animals entirely. Sunbury/Columbus North KOA Holiday and Lazy River at Granville both maintain cabin rentals year-round, unlike seasonal operations that close during winter. A review of Jackson Lake Park mentioned, "I chose to stay in a cabin, which was pretty pricy for what it was. For $175, it was a basic cabin with a queen bed and 2 twin bunk-beds, a very small bathroom with a toilet and shower, and a small kitchenette."

Most cabin rentals provide beds with mattresses but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, and towels. Kitchen facilities range from simple microwaves and mini-refrigerators to no cooking amenities at all. Many campgrounds enforce cooking restrictions, requiring food preparation to take place outside the cabin due to health code regulations. On-site camp stores at locations like Buckeye Lake KOA and Alum Creek State Park sell basic provisions, firewood, and ice. Visitors staying at cabins should check specific amenity lists before arrival, as bathroom facilities may be located in central shower houses rather than within the cabins themselves. According to feedback on The Dyrt, some cabins "had no bed linens, or towels, and the bathroom didn't even have a mirror."

    Jackson Lake Park

    Campground with Water Park

I stayed at this campground because they hosted a wedding I attended. I chose to stay in a cabin, which was pretty pricy for what it was. for $175, it was a basic cabin with a queen bed and 2 twin bunk-beds, a very small bathroom with a toilet and shower, and a small kitchenette with a microwave, sink, and mini-fridge. The cabin was somewhat dirty - dust on the floor and spider webs in the corner. It had no bed linens, or towels, and the bathroom didn't even have a mirror.

There is a "lake" (more of a large pond) on the property, with fishing, and large inflatables to play on in the summer. There is also a disc golf course. The nearby town Lithopolis is cute, with some local coffee and dining, as well as antique shops.

    Delaware State Park Campground

    Nice Ohio State Park

This state park spans over 2,000 acres and is just north of the cute Ohio town of Delaware. We stayed here for two nights while visiting friends in the area but wished we would have stayed to enjoy all that the park had to offer. The campground was really nice and quiet when we stayed there which was during the week and in the spring and not very crowded. We can imagine that this park is pretty full in the summer with all their amenities and close proximity to major Ohio cities.

The 'pod' layout of the campground made for large campsites (some sites are over 90 feet in length and well suited for large RV’s) with good separation between sites. There are 212 sites that have 50 amp electric. The campground also has yurts for rent (May through October) that are furnished with beds, table and chairs, a cooler, ceiling fan, outdoor charcoal grill and a picnic table with canopy. This is a great option for those wanting to stay in something more than a tent but don’t have an RV.

There is no sewer or water at individual sites but there is a dump station and water fill station near the park entrance. Roads and campsites are paved with grassy patios that feature picnic tables and fire pits. The park does not provide wifi but our Verizon hotspot and 4G phone worked well. There are centrally located bath/shower houses with coin-operated laundry facilities.

The park is open year-round and great for outdoor activities; especially, those that are water-related. There are numerous boat launches, fully equipped marina, and swimming area. We launched our kayaks and had a great time paddling around the lake.  Be aware that there is no horsepower limits for boats on the lake and weekends are very popular for anglers in high-powered bass boats. The northern portion of the lake is a “no wake zone” which makes for a more pleasant paddling environment.  If you don’t have a boat, boat rentals are available at the marina.

For those wanting to hike there are plenty of hiking/biking trails for you to get out and explore the park.  Many of the trails link together so you can decide how long you want to hike. The Lakeview Trail was perfect for us as our dog loved jumping in the water during our hike. Other amenities in the park include a nature center, 18-hole disk golf, hunting, archery, volleyball, horse shoe pits, picnic areas, and an 800-foot designated swimming area.  At the camp store/office you can rent bikes as well as other sporting equipment.

If you decide to venture out of the park you are only about 40 miles from downtown Columbus and less than 20 miles to the world-renowned Columbus Zoo (which is definitely worth a visit). The nearby town of Delaware is really nice with downtown shopping, restaurants, a historic theater and brewery (Stass Brewing Company has great Belgian-style beer with a fun atmosphere).

Would definitely camp here again if we were in the area.

    Buckeye Lake-Columbus East KOA

    Kabin 7 and Kabin 11

The KOA was what one expects of the KOA lots of features and not very secluded. The Kabins were lovely.

The design is nice as the bunk beds are in their own separate room. This means the back room will sleep four individuals. They also included little tables and benches so you can organize yourself in the room.  The front room has a large bed that sleeps two.  Then outside is the picnic table.  Due to health code rules you have to cook and do food outside of the cabin.

Our first cabin some of the light bulbs were dead and as a result they moved us to another cabin. Problem solved.

The bathrooms were very clean and the folks at the camp store were very helpful. I will say that my friend that took a shower was frustrated as one shower was scalding hot and the other was cold.  The floors were slippery as they didn't have a way to stop the water from going beyond the shower (no rim or lip).  She didn't get to use the Family Shower as you have to get the key from the store.  Shower time was usually before bed time with two little ones as they would get dirty playing during the day.  Since the camp store closes at 8 PM she would just use the standard shower with her kiddos. We thought this was a great feature and would have liked to get a look at the family shower set up.

At the camp store, they would drop off the wood via golf carts as you purchased it.  I was able to buy three bundles for $18.00 as it is cheaper that way.  I also purchased two bags of ice.

The cabin was fun and we were able to keep our trip simple by packing less due to the cabin.  Buckeye Lake State Park is close by and if you don't have a boat they really don't have a lot to offer non-boaters unlike other lake state parks.  We didn't see any trails.  We did go to the "beach" but opted not to swim. Our time was spent at the near by Dawes Arboretum and Newark's Earthworks (mounds).

**Will try to come back and upload more photos and videos later as tonight many of my posts are not fully uploading.

At Boulders Edge Cabin and Tipi Retreat

    Amazing!

Perfect place for a getaway! They have tipi and cabin rentals. Such a nice place tucked away that isn't as over crowded as other places.

    Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins

    Family Friendly

Great campground with lots to do! RV sites are a little small and close together, but comes with a picnic table and fire pit. There are back in and pull through RV spots - along with nice shady spots for rent camping. Cabins are also available. Great spot to camp if interested in tubing/canoeing/kayaking down Mohican river. When you arrive everyone in the vehicle checks in, and then someone on a golf cart takes you to your spot. Campground has an indoor pool and hot tub. Also has pond with paddle boards and paddle boats that need to be reserved at additional cost. Quite a few playgrounds available and mountain bike trails. Small creek runs along the campground. All guests are given a wrist band that gives you a discount at the Trails End restaurant and at Mohican Adventures across the street.

    Delaware State Park Campground

Large, well-laid-out park on the Delaware Reservoir

General: 214-site campground, all with electric hookups. Campsites are in four loops.

Site Quality: All sites are paved and appeared to be level. A fire ring, picnic table, and electric hookup complete each site. Generous foliage provides separation between most sites.

Bath/Shower: Fully contained all-gender units in the third loop. Each one has a bench and a baby changing station. Soap and air dryers. A more traditional bath/shower house was in the fourth loop (don’t know about the first two loops).

Activities/Amenities: Several hiking trails (but it was raining when we were there so didn’t explore), a small putt-putt course (free use of putters and balls), disc golf, shuffleboard, basketball, tennis, and a small camper store. Each loop has a playground and other recreational options (i.e. volleyball net). The marina offers water toy rentals.

My five-star rating is based on the possibility of what our stay might have been if the weather had cooperated! Unfortunately, it was cold and rainy during our stay in June. We will definitely be back again to take advantage of the marina rentals.

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Winter Time But No Snow

We stayed on a full hook up site (turned off for the season) that had a nice concrete level pad. There was also a nice side pad that kept our chairs clean. A little further back in the campground to be close to the shower house that was open. Then found out that comfort station next to us was open - nice! Also close the water which was full and rushing all weekend.

The camp store was open on the weekend and the staff was nice to chat with. They had wood, but it was slab cut which doesn’t burn very well. We decided against it. Lots of snacks and other items still available.

Some sites were really close to the water, almost too close as the water flooded a few spots. The campground is nice to walk if you like to get in a little workout. They also have small camper cabins and them much bigger cabins which a few are pet friendly.

We went on a hike by the covered bridge to one of the waterfalls. Lots of trials to choose from.

    Delaware State Park Campground

    Lots of shade and mosquitoes

We stayed in site 174 on the farthest loop from the entrance. This site provided full shade all day long. The pad was pretty even so not a lot of leveling to do for our a-frame camper. The pad was easy to back in to and we had plenty of room to pull our truck forward. The site has 30 amp and 50 amp and our 30 amp was not working. We notified the park staff and they responded quickly to come out and fix it. The site had a great fire ring and lots of space for chairs, an ez-up, pop-up bathroom tent off to the side and it probably could have held 1-2 tents. There were trees close enough to set up 1-2 hammocks as well. The park staff came out it seemed to be every 3 hours to spray the water fountain in the middle of the turn around. There is a showerhouse in the middle of the loop, not a far walk or you could drive as there were a few parking spots nearby. The showerhouse had plenty of flush toilets and sinks. There were three showers that had doors, but it was just one space and no bench inside your stall. There were plenty of hooks, but you could get your items wet if you weren't careful. There is a bench outside of your stall and there is a curtain that separates you from the toilets and sinks. Not the greatest changing area if you are shy. You could tell it was the weekend as the bathrooms were a little messy, but I've seen way worse. There are also two dumpsters outside the showerhouse for trash. Watch out for the masked bandits (raccoons). They were not shy at all and we had to chase them off from our campsite. Do not leave out any food or trash, they will get into it. There are lots of trails (we found a lot of mushrooms!), a beach, playgrounds and a frisbee golf course. The mosquitoes were really bad this weekend, but we had been there last year and didn't have any issues.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    Fall Delight

This was a great experience! Nice, flat campsites, running water and flush toilets. I believe all sites are electric and we brought a projector/screen to watch some movies.

This campground is usually super booked but noise level was not an issue.

We stayed at site J24 and the only down fall was that the fire ring did not have a grate.

Guide to Westerville

Camping cabins near Westerville, Ohio typically feature varying levels of amenities, from rustic structures to more equipped units. Westerville sits at approximately 890 feet elevation with a humid continental climate experiencing four distinct seasons. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F while spring and fall fluctuate between 45-65°F, requiring cabin campers to prepare for changing conditions throughout the camping season.

What to do

Lake activities: Alum Creek State Park Campground provides direct water access with a campground beach and boat launch specifically for guests. "The camp sites are spacious and private, surrounded by trees and brush. Beautiful walking trails. There's also a great mountain biking trail in the vicinity. There's a small beach within the campground, a bigger public beach a short drive away," notes a visitor from September 2020.

Shooting sports: Cardinal Center Campground offers comprehensive shooting facilities. "This is a very nice, easy access CG with wide, spacious, and level pull through and back-in gravel sites. It is the largest shooting center (clays, skeet, pistol, rifle, archery) in the state," explains a June 2022 reviewer.

Fishing opportunities: Delaware State Park Campground maintains stocked fishing areas throughout its 2,000+ acre property. "We launched our kayaks and had a great time paddling around the lake. Be aware that there is no horsepower limits for boats on the lake and weekends are very popular for anglers in high-powered bass boats. The northern portion of the lake is a 'no wake zone' which makes for a more pleasant paddling environment," shares a June 2017 camper.

What campers like

Private sites: Delaware State Park Campground receives consistent praise for spacious campsites. "This is probably our favourite state park we have been to thus far. We went camping early October in tents. The best thing about this campground is the fact that all the sites have privacy," explains an August 2020 review.

Clean facilities: Cross Creek Camping Resort maintains well-kept facilities. A September 2020 reviewer states, "Lots of full-time residents, great private campground. It's an RV resort, so sites are right next to each other, but the grounds and facilities are clean and well-kept. The pool is really nice."

Seasonal activities: Lazy River at Granville offers themed weekends and special events. "Always something for family and dog to do. It was a little chilly this weekend for Memorial Day weekend, so we did not use the pool, but the kids stayed entertained with all of the themed events that took place," reports a June 2021 visitor.

What you should know

Bathroom facilities: Jackson Lake Park receives mixed reviews regarding restrooms. "Their was actually a sign that said ecoli was found in one of the bathrooms. The bathrooms just made me worry about everything else being clean," warns an August 2020 camper.

Site types: Buckeye Lake-Columbus East KOA offers various accommodation options with specific layouts. "Some of the newer sites still need some work, but otherwise ok. For a great in-town dinner try The Chef Shack - great food and a microbrewery to boot," mentions an August 2021 review.

Seasonal considerations: Cross Creek Camping Resort experiences different crowds throughout the week. A May 2021 visitor notes, "This is a RV resort close to a lake with a lot of seasonal campers. It is busy on the weekend but was very quiet during the week."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Sunbury/Columbus North KOA Holiday provides multiple recreational options. "Very well kept campground with TONS of staff always circulating around and eager to help with anything you need. Kids aged 3-13 all had a blast in the heated pool, on the jump pad and on the zip line swing!" shares a July 2018 reviewer.

Cabin selection: When booking cabins, check specific floor plans for family configurations. According to a September 2020 reviewer at Cross Creek, "Lots of full-time residents, great private campground. They also have themed-event weekends, which are really fun! It's on the pricey side, but worth it in my opinion."

Weather planning: Delaware State Park Campground provides storm protection. A camper notes, "I also noticed that they had a nice storm shelter on the property that was well marked and easy to get to from any of the campground areas."

Tips from RVers

Site accessibility: Cardinal Center Campground offers level sites for easier setup. "We spent one night here (May 12, 2022). This is a very nice, easy access CG with wide, spacious, and level pull through and back-in gravel sites," notes a June 2022 visitor.

Hookup locations: Cross Creek Camping Resort requires some adaptation for water connections. "We appreciated the full hook-ups and pull through site. The staff came through every morning to pick up the trash. But, the water hook ups were accessible through a hole/pipe and we had to 'fish' down to connect our hose," explains a September 2020 camper.

Wi-Fi capabilities: Jackson Lake Park offers paid internet access. "The Wi-Fi was good but not free and was worth the $2/day to do some late night binge watching," states a September 2020 review.
